Title: Spitfire Mk IIa
Post by: kiwichappers on April 24, 2020, 01:32:27 PM
Just begun one of the new tool Airfix Spitfire Mk I/Ia/IIa kits. It's all sweetness and light so far with options to build virtually any early Spitfire Mk.

What scale is this one Francis? It's going to be a beauty anyway, but just curious.

It's 48th scale, my usual scale for building Spitfires. Bit more progress today the starboard side cockpit wall.

Thanks Dave, I'll endeavour to uphold the high standards of the site. but don't be alarmed if there's the odd slip in standards.

Hi Francis good to see what you are doing - looking at my models you have no problem upholding the standard (very low in my case)

Hi Francis,
Great to have you back posting again.
Can I ask a question?
Were certain instruments on British aircraft outlined in blue, yellow and red just like the Luftwaffe aircraft?
Never seen this highlighted before.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Hi Francis bought one of these at Bolton,  the last show we attend as a club seems such a long time ago, it was quite cheap, I’ll watch an expert build before I mess mine up.
Cheers

It's looking good Francis.

Where are we going to display all these models when this pandemic is over?
We'll have to have WEEKLY Club meetings to fit them all in!

Thanks for the welcome everybody. Now then Kevin, the gauges with the coloured bezels are suffering a bit from modellers licence in that the rings around are not as fine as I like them to be, hence their overly prominent appearance. They are all engine management gauges for temperatures and pressures and their appearance seems to vary from no colour through to my gaudy effort here.

Hi Kiwichappers,
Thanks for the update. I know that I use some artistic licence sometimes, especially when reference material is hard to locate.
But, it looks very nice mate, so please continue to lavish us with this build.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Hi Francis,
Thanks for letting me know about the instruments.
I think it will still be visible if we/they look closely enough.
Great build,
more please!

Lovely work Francis.  I have always enjoyed your finished kits so it's a treat to see how they get there.

What is Biggles up too? Anyway  here's progress today. All flying surfaces fitted and faired in with a gentle sand and polish. Canopy masking done and the airframe ready for priming later this evening.

Anyway before I got highjacked by Biggles intrusion I was about to post todays up date on the Spitfire. Here it is just out of the spray shop painted in the delicious but elusive late 1940 'Sky Blue'. It'll disappear now for a couple of days for the paint to properly dry out.

Don't worry Francis Biggles tries to take over everything - now he can post photos just think what he will get up to ???!!!???
Other than him taking over the Spit is looking good.

Looking good. I'm just about to start reading Bruce Robertson's 'Spitfire - The Story of a Famous Fighter' covers everything from development through all the marks and has lots of photos as well serial numbers and profiles.

Here we go with the decaling. So far so good all have settled down without having to resort to the hair dryer.

Thanks for the compliments gents, appreciated. Here it is, declared as finished. The photo's are not the best but it gives an impression of the finished model representing the 421 Flight Spitfire Mk IIa flown by Pilot Officer Keith Lawrence during November 1940.
