Could not decide on a topic for the "Yorkshire" comp. Though about HMS Bounty as she was built in Hull ( take too long to make AND WOULD HAVE TO BUY A MODEL ) looked in the stash and thought about converting a north sea fishing trawler to one my dad had sailed on ( seeing as it would be another ship my dad sailed on, would like to spend more time and effort on it ) last idea was converting HMS Iron Duke into HMS Marlborough who was torpedoed at the battle of Jutland and was sent to the Humber area ( bit of a tenuous link )
Then "she who must be obeyed" came up with Count Dracula arriving in Whitby from Varna.
So on with the DEMETER. ( I keep calling her the Dementor - must stop watching Harry Potter films
Photo show rough 3D model to get size.
Before you ask Zak the scale is 1/72
And before you all get your copies of the book out -I know that she arrived with only one body strapped to the wheel - its artistic licence - or as I say its only a model and its for FUN.
-
Seriously weird as usual.
-
With large white hound, boxes of earth and the lifeless Captain lashed to the wheel no doubt?
-
Thank you Zak I will take that as a compliment.
-
Thank you Zak I will take that as a compliment.
I should if I were you.
-
I'm REALLY looking forward to this one - full of Yorkshire 'bite'... wonderful choice! The Count would be impressed. (Thinks: I wonder how many in the club have actually read the book?)
-
I read it many years ago.
-
So that is 3 people.
-
The 4 sections of the hull made - next fasten them together and make smooth - well thats the plan.
-
I picked the book up at Manchester airport a couple of years ago. Well written and a good story, but a little overlong.
Looking forward to this build.

-
Thanks Roger can't wait to get my teeth into this model !!!!
-
I suppose we will all have to 'suck it and see' to see how it develops..........

-
Fang you for the comments so far.
-
I'm not going to Demeter myself with these sort of comments!
-
Lets put a stake in this topic before we get the point.
-
Chips, peas and onion rings with mine please.
-
On with the model - the 3 sections ( it looked much to large with 4 sections ) have been glued and clamped and then "dovetail nailed " together. Rough shaping has started and a couple of small holes filled with filler.
When the model is finished it will be given to Harry and Ted to remind them of their trips "up north to Yorkshire" from "down south"
-
On with the deck - a piece of thin plastic scored to make the deck planks and then fastened to the wooded hull.
The strange concoction is not what I am about to drink but a test on a bit that will be the sails. If it works well it should look the part
-
Deck trimmed and a start made on the gunwale.
-
Gunwale finished and ready to drill for the mast and bowsprite. Then on with the cabin, coffins of earth and a large dog to keep pen-pusher happy.
The sail is not so good but my friend ( yes Zak I have friends ) says its a synthetic material and she has some natural cotton with a very similar weave that will be better.
-
Hull drilled for brass rod with plastic tube over this - now to file down the plastic to make them into masts and bowsprite.
-
Flippin' 'eck, that was quick, are you any relation to Zak or do you just eat the same stuff?
Haddock.
-
AFTER 20 YEARS AT SEA - I EAT ANYTHING ON MY PLATE UNLESS ITS MOVING - THEN YOU STUN IT WITH YOUR SPOON AND THEN EAT IT. DOES THAT HELP????
Back to the Demeter - small wood block made for the cabin and started to add thin plastic that has been grooved to show the planks.
-
Is that Draculas bed?
-
No Zak its for the next model "Goldilockszak and the three bears" - I joke ( well its an idea so you never know)
The curved top will be fitted when the sides are smoothed down to the block of wood.
The crew have been primed and ready for painting.

Looks like they have all had a stake through the heart. Forward planning I guess?
-
No Zak the last one has his stake through his foot - but they have ALL been drained of blood - hence the white skin.
-
By coincidence!
Coming to a nightmare near you soon...
-
First coat of brown on the deck and cabin
-
A bit of colour on the crew but not on the skin !!!!
-
Brass bar made to fit round the main mast and plastic tube fitted over this for the spar.
The last photo shows the coffins that will be placed on the deck.
-
It's not the cough that carries you off ................................................
-
After reading your comment Zak -- we now have the board to fasten the shrouds onto ( this is the rigging shroud not the shroud for the deceased ) and we also have some colour on the coffin - it might be the cough that did it !!!!!!
-
It's all rather 'Ghoulish' this stuff.
I thought the show was keeping me awake...................................
It's this build..............................
Bigkev
-
Sorry Kevin - was it the model or the though of me ??????
-
The thought of you makes me 'smile' Msea, not have nightmares............................
However, you do have the knack of coming up with something to get the grey cells going..........Damn You!!
I'll get my own back this weekend, now where's that 1/2" brush to paint the grass green........
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
I just caught up on this one and it is intruiging me.....what has happened since the last post?
-
Sorry Kiteman NOT A LOT - waiting for my friend to make the sails and have been working on N/S Savannah - should be back on the Demeter in a week or so.
-
Well its been a time but my friend Lisa has now made the sails - a little cleanning up on the edges to do.
The extra bit of sail is now in the concoction - so will give it a couple of hours and see what colour it turns out.
-
....and the concoction is?
-
Just a tea bag.
-
That has been 3 hours in the concoction.
Will let it dry overnight and if the colour is too light, back into the concoction it will go -- easier to keep getting it darker than trying to make it lighter.
-
I have some rigging blocks if you need 'em?
-
amazing what can be done with a tea bag! Did you drink the tea afterwards??
-
No Kiteman I HATE tea - the only tea I drink is China Tea or similar
-
I am not happy ( before Zak makes the comment - I don't know which of the other dwarfs I am ) the sails have now been soaked in tea and have a good colour BUT they are very even, with no colour difference.
The photo of the square sail has had coffee granuals soaked onto it - the triangular one has been painted with very small drops of vallejo paint onto the material and then lots of water added to wash it into the sail.
I think the coffee one looks more natural !!!!!!!!
-
First go at coffee stain on the sail a complete wash out ( the jokes are getting worse) you can see the granule of coffee on the sail and then hot water added to the granule. When it was finished I put the whole sail in a tray of water and surprise surprise the coffee stain just disappeared.
Back to the drawing board and this time after the coffee granule and drops of hot water, I just washed the stain into the sail with more water on a brush - so I hade more control of the effect.
Now to let it dry and see the final result.
-
What exactly is the effect that you are looking for?
-
If he's like me, he doesn't really know till he gets it. Happy accidents.
Haddock.
-
All this colouring reminds me of a character from Captain Pugwash.
-
Would that be the First Mate - Zak ?????????????????
-
Seaman Stain.
-
N.S.Savannah finished so back to work on the Demeter.
Steering wheel under construction.
-
Garlic bread anyone?
Bridlufc
-

I will take a CROSS with that please.
-
I'll have a stake - through the heart. ( I would really prefer a steak!)

Now Zak has had his food.
A couple of racks made for the belaying pins at the base of the mast.
-
Nice Detail!
-
Avast there land lubbers.
-
2 links of chain added to mast for the rigging.
The steering wheel has now had its spokes cut and a central hub fitted.
-
Coffins and dead on deck. Steering wheel progressing.
-
Steering wheel fitted and dead man at wheel also - lashing for the dead helmsman still to add.
-
....all very macarbe but well done.
-
Thank you Kiteman.
Just sortting out the final layout for the ship, sign and map.
Then on with the rigging.
-
Three sails fitted and also the running rigging.
-
But where is the Stoker?
Bram that is!
-
But where is the Stoker?
Bram that is!
Like all good engineers/stokers on sailling ships - he is in the pub.
-
Jig made for some of the standing rigging.
-
Wowza Martin...nice!
-
Wowza Martin...nice!
Thank you Kiteman - its just the engineer in me - why do it simple when you can make it difficult.
-
Hi Msea,
I think I might call you 'Challenged'. You always look for the alternative route, not the one a sane man would follow, but it wouldn't be you if you did.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Thank you Kevin -- you seem to have summed me up correctly.
I suppose "challenged" is a little better than what you lot usually call me !!!!!
-
The standing rigging from the home-made jig has now been fitted.
-
Very seaman-like!!
Haddock.
-
All ship shape and bristol fashion I would say (whatever that means???)
-
You leave Msea's Bristol's alone!!
If not Joyce, will have your guts for garters!!!
Bigkev
-
Finished model on base.
-
......and very nice too, well done that man. Now build an aircraft.

Thank you Haddock that took the words out of my mouth.
