I built the Knaz Suverov see first photo many years ago BH ( Before Haddock showed me how to make ship models) and she is a sister ship of the Orel, all in the Borodino Class of Russian battleships.
I decided to make the Orel taking on coal but nobody seems to make a collier in 1/350 scale -- so i will make it from scratch.
Being away for 2 weeks took some bits and bobs to make a start on the collier. Second photo is the bridge parts and the enginroom top ( could not take superglue with me) so just made the parts and have fastened them together now i am home.
The main deck and three islands have now been fastened together ( the sharp eyed amongst you will find the that I had run out of 5mm solid bar and had to use 5mm tube and fill in the holes. )
Made some vents and pulley blocks (If Wizzel wants to find out how to make the small pulleys I will show some step by step photos)

Hi Msea,
Another creation from the dockyard. Starting it whilst on holiday, now that's dedication.

That's a very understanding wife!!
Haddock.
-
Yes Haddock she has put up with me for 46 years, puts you lot to shame ---hohoho
Pulley blocks fastened to wire and added to the masts.
The hole for the holds ( try saying that 10 times after a few drinks) cut into the main deck and hatch combings added. Next job make the lower hull with the space to see into the holds and then skin the outside of the ship.
-
Very nice, I just love a bit of scratch building.
-
Lower hull made from balsa and fitted, then a skin of thin plastic added to both sides. A bit of filler added -- letting it dry and than smooth down to combine the skin and cut away hull at the aft end.
Next job fasten all the masts and booms together and then string them all in the correct order - that's the plan anyway.
-
Work on the mast and booms and some colour on the vents.
-
Speedy stuff, I will have to work faster, smarter or both.
-
Some more work done on the ship and the masts.
-
Rails on the ships side changed. As I said last night at the meeting the rails I have fitted to the ships side are very thick and over size, they have been replaced with some from Peter Hall and I think look much better.
If you see the rails on the left are the new ones and the old rail is still,at the moment, on the right side of the photo. The other main problem is the old rail only fastens at the single points of the stanchions and did not have a full bar running along the deck, so they ping off if you give them a dirty look, let alone touch them.
-
Hi 'My Favourite Martian'
I too had problems with some kit etch, those given to me by Haddock were much better like yours from Peter Hall.
Coming along nicely............
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
A bit of colour on the hull and the mast trial fitted
-
Some winches from North Star painted and brass bits added.
Fitted to ship, next job is to dirty up the ship and then rig the mast and add figures.
-
Looking very busy, keep scratching - it may be catching.
-
Some rigging done on the masts
-
Bottom of the hull of the Orel " hacked off" - see I do know technical words.
-

No I was trained correctly by "Bodgit & Quickly" --- talking about scarper that is what I shall do at the club meeting when they see the 2 models I am bringing -- "Steam Punk Banker" and the "Club Committee Meeting"

Ubendumwemendum Eng.
Haddock.
-
bend and mend yourself Haddock.
Made some coal sacks they are OK on mast but too large on ship so made a lot more smaller ones. The large ones are painted brown on the first photo.
-
Hi Msea,
That looks like a fancy cocktail party photo............
Only its not Cheese and Pineapple pieces on the sticks!
Luv the dedication man, really cool.........................

My heart has just sunk, I am dreading the meeting.

Don't know why, YOU ARE THE STAR OF THE SHOW.
-
The star of this subject is the 'Builder'
Nice original work Msea.
Well done!
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Thank you Kevin for the comments -- but as you know I am just trying to catch up with you lot.
Just returned yesterday from 5 days in London and have spent 2 full days in Greenwich Maritime Museum ( not as an old exhibit before you ask) have found some good information about colliers and will incorporate this into the next collier model.
-
The main decks of the "Orel" painted and some individual planks picked out in different colours. Then some of the bits and bobs on the deck painted in grey.
-
Top deck and other bits added to the main deck.
-
Orel and collier in place on the base
-
Hi Msea,
A very nice themed display of two models in a real event setting.
I'm sure the finished article will be very appealing.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
The 4 accommodation blocks on the main deck now in place.
Have done a dry fit with the next 2 decks above and found the ships sides are well splayed out -- so will have to use gentle persuasion to bring them into shape - listen for the crack, you should be able to hear it as far as Brid.
-
The ford section of deck added - no cracks AT THE MOMENT, we shall see how it goes !!!!
-
Ford deck seems OK - small gap so added a filler of acrylic.
Aft deck added with again a large amount of pressure to get it into line.
-
Work on the main and secondary guns -- barrels replaced with Albion Alloys slide fit brass tube
-
The cast on ladders up the side of the hull removed and etch brass replaced them. The ladders up the front of the turret was one of the ziggurat solid type, so removed and replaced with brass.
-
Hi Msea,
Well done on the etch, Haddock has obviously been giving you tips.
Neat work Sir.
Bigkev
-
Not as good as Zaks on his missile ship

Not really, my only "tip" is "get stuck in".

Haddock.
ALL your comments are like little nuggets of gold -- I like this one. It is easy to say I can't do it ,its difficult, its so small, it will look like 5$%£ -. BUT if you just get stuck in, each time will be easier.
Yoda Haddock, I will have to find that cartoon i did of Haddock as Yoda with the comment - how do you make your sea base look so realistic - "About a bit push it you do"
-
Like your gun barrels by the way.
Haddock.
-
Like your gun barrels by the way.
Haddock.
Thank you - it was the brass you gave me from SMW - so you can say you are part of my model - or would you keep quiet about being part of one of my models -- ??????
-
I now have the image of Tony speaking as Yoda stuck in my head.
-
If I could be Tony's agent think of the royalties he could earn, and my percentage.
Big earner, my young 'Skywalker', he would say.....................
I'll never look at Tony again without the image of 'Yoda' in my mind..........
He is the 'Master' of Plastic and etch
Cheers,
Bigkev.
-
The model has no net shelf so one made from 0.5mm acrylic.
After it is solid, will make it a little bit smaller and add some net and the operating bars and wires.
-
First shot is some tutu net from Boyes - coloured and then rolled up. The second shot is this added to the net shelf.
-
Just found a good photo of a Japanese sailor standing guide on the Orel in one of my books. It shows the main turrets have a single row of rails round the turret top with a gap near the observation hoods.
-
Torpedo net operating bars, with operating wires fasten on.
Bars fastened to ships side, when solid will chop the wires and fasten to the nets.
-
Hi Msea,
No torpedo's will make it through those nets.
Nice detailed work Msea, and all from your ingenuity, great stuff.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Thanks Kev - but what will I put on next dance night -- my tutu has bits missing ???????
-
Thanks Kev - but what will I put on next dance night -- my tutu has bits missing ???????
Never mind it will show off your shapely legs...........
o, eeeer!
Bigkev
-
Torpedo net operating bars replaced on the port side - the original ones not very strong and pinged off when working on the other side of the ship. New ones are just bent brass bar fastened into a hole in the ships side.
-
Rails round the aft end and the companion ways added.
-
back to some modelling at last. Working on the ships boats - thinning down the thwarts and sides. The second photo is the boats in marked plastic tops so I don't forget which is which, the things in the pegs are the small gun barrels.
-
Hi Msea,
Very organised Sir!
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Back to ships to keep both Haddock and myself happy. Casemate guns added.
-
Working on the rails above the casemate guns
-
Coming along nicely.
Haddock.
-
Thank you Haddock.
Some of the 11pdr guns had the barrels broken off, so had to replace with brass tube. Now replacing all of the other 11pdr gun barrels, also decided that I should have replaced the 75mm barrels but heho its only a model and for fun ( also it would be a problem to remove them from the model ) so will put a black dot on the barrel ends.
-
All 11pdr barrels replaced and primed.
-
Respect!
-
All 11pdr barrels replaced and primed.
But how will you hang out the washing?
-
She has nice new shiny plastic pegs -- bought her these as a joke a few years ago at Christmas ( all wrapped up with a bow ) then when she did not want them they disappeared into my modelling stash.
-
Cooooool!
That was advanced thinking.
Pegs to use, and you made her feel good by buying her plastic ones.
Result.

No fly's on MSea just footprints.
Accommodation blocks fitted - please note all windows/portholes drilled and cleaned up to shape with a scalpel -- and yes I still have all fingers and thumbs in working order. Next 3 decks primed ready to fit and cover up all the work on the accommodation blocks - but heho its only for FUN.
-
The top deck has several support pillars to give it strength -- I find that when fitting this they always splay out and become a pain in the £"$.
So I don't bother fitting them, but drill out the holes and fit a section of brass bar from the top when the deck has been fitted into place. The bar in the photo is just to show how they are fitted, the correct ones will be cut to length before fitting.
-
the 3 front pillars in place.
-
Hi Msea,
Looking 'ship shape and Bristol fashion'.
I always like to see an alternative soloution to a modelling problem.
What you have done looks good. Have a 'Gold Star' today.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Thanks Kevin if i get 4 more i can stick them on my forehead like in "The Young Ones"
-

Young ones?
I think not.
Old ones (gits) maybe!
-
Maybe NOT the "Young Ones" but the "Grumpy Old Gits" definitely. See you all on Friday
-
Just to keep haddock happy - back on the Orel taking on coal.
The figures are Tamiya set No12622 this is a set of 144 figures in 1/350 scale.
-
Some colour added to the figures.
-
Decided it would be easier to make a flat section of card and add cat litter for the coal and also the workmen in the hold.
When it is all finished it will be added to the bottom of the hull - rather than try to add all this stuff through the open hatch - that's the plan at the moment so we shall see how it goes.
-
Coal added to the hold and painted - just the men to add now.
Will anybody notice this at all -- very doubtful but Haddock will know its there.
-
Figures on the right have been made as if they are in the hold moving coal about, before somebody says they would be totally covered in coal dust and you would not see them - its only a model and for FUN.
-
Figures added to the hold when solid will fasten the card and coal/figures to the bottom of the hull.
-
All fastened together - never to be seen by most people again - but heyho its only for Haddock and for FUN.
-
Steering wheel and binnacle made - binnacle needs a little bit more glue on the bar ends to make the round balls.
-
Working on the coal bags on the hoist.
-
The old imagination just goes on and on it seems.
Good stuff, you do have some novel ideas.
-
Do the "novel" ideas come from me reading books ?????????????????
-
Do the "novel" ideas come from me reading books ?????????????????
I thought that you just looked at the pictures.
-
You know me 2 well
-
Pictures, or novels it does not matter...….
This is a great build...….
Hat's off to Msea.
Bigkev
-
Steering wheel and binnacle added to the ship.
-
Two sections of brass bar soldered together as a start on the ships masts -- expect we will have a happy Haddock now.
-
Working on the top mast and cross yards
-
Hi Msea,
Like the way you can dip in and out of a modelling project.
Great to see more progress on this subject.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Both parts of the mast soldered together and the fighting top added.
So I can dip in and out of models -- does that make me dippy ?????? hohoho
-
Does 'Dippy' has a better ring to it than 'Vlad the Impaler'??
Bigkev
-
Does 'Dippy' has a better ring to it than 'Vlad the Impaler'??
Bigkev
I can get my teeth into Vlad the Impaler more easy -- hohoho
Some work done on the aft mast, with the lower yardarm and the flag arm added.
-
Dippy is the word - forgot to add the photo.
-
All parts of the aft mast fastened together.
-
Dry run for the masts with the old Orel battleship behind her.
-
Looking good, keep at it.
Haddock.
-
Both masts finished now to add double chain links for the rigging and some rails round the platforms - OOHHHHHH the joy of etch brass !!!!!
-
Hi Msea,
Exceptional attention to detail....
Looking very good, a tribute to your modelling skills.
Kind regards,
Bigkev
-
As promised last night to Haddock - back to the ships. This is the 2 steam launches together and primed, the funnels have been replaced.
-

Our aircraft lovers, will drag you into our side. eventually.
Beware...….
Bigkev
-
Don't think so !!!!
-
Talking about being dragged back - found this one as I was sorting things out to go back in my room --- and decided to get back to working on this as well as the Turtle Ship.
-
Nice work Martin or should it be dippy?
-
Is that "dippy doo dah" and will I fit in with the new Playday / DooDahDay - yohoho
-
Coat of plaster of paris on the base to represent the sea around Cam Ranh Bay - from the colour in the bottle behind the base you can see it has come out a little lighter than the colour mixed - forgot to take into account the white powder and white pva mixed in with the paint. Will see what colour it dries and adjust as needed.
-
Nice colour though.
-
Haven't you got a shirt that colour? Hmmmm...................

Good description.

Do we have to call him 'Paint Swab' now? Could be as he can be a swab at times, lol!!!
-
Do we have to call him 'Paint Swab' now? Could be as he can be a swab at times, lol!!!
I have been called a lot worse in lots and lots of different languages in my time - so "paint swab" will do OK for me, thanks Chris - yohoho
-
Well 10 to 15 mins of work fastening the coal ship down on the base and adding some paste to fill between the ships hull and the water and that's me finished for the day - I hate covid
-
Looking very nice.
-
Thanks Chris
-
Next level on the bridge done
-
Hi Msea,
Looking good, on the homeward stretch now.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Coming along nicely. The sea looks like that on the Danish coast on Saturday as Le Tour went along. Nice.
-
Some more work done on the aft fighting section.
The boat davits are just bent bits of plastic so will replace some with a set of etch brass from North Star Models - that will keep Haddock happy, BUT must remember to shut the window to keep the naughty nautical language inside the room when trying to bend them into shape - yohoho
-
That should keep you busy Martin. Looking very nice.
-
Thanks Chris - at the moment its SLOW but steady well that's how it feels.
-
Keep this up and you'll be giving Haddock a run for his money!! Either that or he'll say 'I taught you well young Skywalker'.
-
NO Chris - I can see all the problems with this one - and it was started a long while ago, Haddock has improved my skills/tricks/methods since then.
I just look at this one as , its finished soon and looks OK'ish and fills another space in the cabinet.
-
Brain still mush from the covid ( before you say it Zak, yes I know my brain was mush before I got covid - yohoho) Looked at the collier fatened down and ready to pass on bags of coal and noticed it still had the 2 anchors fixed to the hull. So broke one off and drilled out the holes to fix the chain from the sea to the ship. One less thing for Haddock to pull me up on and point out my mistakes - hohohohoho
-
Mush, well I never, I thought it was just an empty space.
-
Its good to have friends/fiends who know you so well yohoho
-
More like Pandora's box. You never know what's going to come out once opened!!!
-
Ford anchors and winch fitted.
The instructions show the winch fitted on the sloping section of deck that also has the anchors fastened to it. My research, that is looking at photos of the ship, not other plastic models of the Orel show the winch is fitted on the main deck behind the railings, so am going with the photo evidence - nit pickers do your worst.
-
More like Pandora's box. You never know what's going to come out once opened!!!
I agree.
-
Working on the ships boats, and also revenge for the Chris x 2 comments - yohoho
-
More colour on the ships boats.
Also decided that its toooooo hot to contemplate revenge on the 2 Chris's so you can both sleep easy - or as it was said in the Godfather film "he sleeps with the fishes"
-
First 8 boats added
-
More work on the ships boats and the ford mast - don't you just love etch-brass >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Looking very nice Martin.
-
Nice to see you're using up the blue left over from the sea. Looking good.
-
Well done Chris - I should have thought of that - its Vallejo pastel blue - I could have saved myself a farthing - yohoho - for the youngsters ask Uncle Neil what a farthing was. ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
So back to keeping Haddock happy - more done on the etch brass for the 2 masts - how do you do it and it ends up perfect, mine just plays with my mind and goes were it wants to.
-
Both masts fitted.
-
Coming together nicely.
-
Comin together ninely.
No Chris coming together slowly
Some more work done on the rigging and rails.
-
Some figures and coal sacks added to the ship
-
Nice details.
-
Thanks Zak - now to try and get some coal sacks being transferred from the coal ship to the battleship and finish the etch brass rails in the Orel
-
Coal sacks added and both ships now fastened down - some work to do on the sea when they are solid and the anchor chain to add as well
-
That looks very effective.
-
Thanks - I am happy with the way it has turned out - but waiting to get the comments from Haddock ( rigging nor correct, not enough stays on the funnel, coal sacks not hanging correct but heyho it has kept me quiet for a while hohohoh)
-
A very nice model Martin. A diorama with a difference. I like it.
-
Your imagination knows no bounds.
Haddock.
-
In other word Haddock --- its more science fiction than science fact - hohoho
-
Looks great, the rigging is a lot better than my attempts. With the size of those sacks I wouldn't want to be a Coalman on that round.
-
Last of the etch brass rails added and another coat of sea put in to make the ship look like its in the water not floating above it. Colour to add to the sea and the Orels anchor chain fitted.
-
Final coat of plaster of paris added.
-
You're completing a few more ships now Martin. A fleet to rival Mr Haddock's?
-
In quantity but not in quality Chris
-
Highlights and lowlights added to the sea and was about to put some gel on the sea when I noticed I had not added the anchor chain to the Orel.
-
Gel added
-
Gel nearly dry , will give it a bit longer and then paint the anchor chain and add the white tops.
Hope some people are now happy with the colour since the gel has been added - if not :o :o :o :o :o :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( - yohoho
-
Looking very good tgere Martin.
-
White tops added to the sea and the anchor chain painted.
-
Very nice Martin. The sea looks good. Haddock should be happy😁.
-
A happy Haddock is what I always aim for ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
