Title: Spraying Humdrol varnish with an airbrush
Post by: bridlufc on November 09, 2013, 10:30:58 PM
Hi all, at last Mondays club meet I brought along a Beriev B6 float plane. I was unhappy with the way Vallejo matt varnish sat on the model so I watched a Humbrol tutorial on youtube regarding spraying Humbrol Varnish (gloss and matt) and decided to finish the model with these. I wasn't happy with the finish of either Humbrol varnishes, through spraying or brush painting but, thanks to Trevor Snowdons' suggestions I am now going in the right direction. He suggested that I gave my model a coat of Future Clear between coats of varnish and also, that spraying in low temperatures could be an issue. I have now incorporated a travel hairdryer into my rather large spray booth to address the problem.

Good tip, but are you sure that is what the hairdryer is really for?
Cheers

Regarding the spelling of Humbrol, my secretary has been shown the benefits of the use of spellchecker and offers her humble apologies, she promises it won't happen again. I acquired the hairdryer from an auction by Sir Alex Ferguson after his retirement and I have been assured it works very well, it solved any problem he had.

Just attempted to spray the Humbrol  Gloss Varnish, experienced similar problems as you. the coat of Klear certainly helps as it provides a protective coat, it does seem to be a lot of bother though.

Dave - sometimes known as Kev and lots of other expletives.

Notice the correct name for the paint.

Yes that should be 'humbrol apologies, I realised my mistake when I posted and tried to correct it but obviously I was unsuccessful.

Ay Up Lads,

When I spray HUMBROL varnish I use Gloss Cote/Matt Cote/Satin Cote, but I thin it with cellulose thinners about 50/50 and spray at about 15 PSI. I find I don't have any issues providing you use thin coats, and allow to dry at least 24 hours before retouching/recoating.

Oh how I love this Alchemy, you have to have passed out of Hogwarts to understand the mysteries of Varnish!

Note to self:- Stop day dreaming boy!!!

Try the modify button.
I should leave it alone, its adds a bit of character to the thread.

Hi Zak,

Come to think of it I've only used the Humbrol Varnishes, with Enamel paints both Humbrol and Xtracolour, on Vallejo Paints I use their varnishes which are superb and dry quick too.

Happy Days, Eh?

From the USA.
I usually use Vallejo varnishes but wanted a high gloss finish.
Already found a model shop in Salt Lake City.
May model the Grand Canyon next.
