General Discussion / MODELS ON THE TABLE - SEPTEMBER 2021
« on: September 09, 2021, 08:31:22 AM »
The first meeting for some time, 18 members attended and here are the models on show on the night.
It was nice to get back to meeting fellow modellers, some who have had Covid.
I thought it was a really good meeting after such a long gap.

Modelling Projects / 1/35 mine with narrow gauge railway.
« on: June 06, 2021, 08:56:55 AM »
1/35 mine with narrow gauge railway.

The ore will be delivered from the working face using a narrow gauge railway.
1/35 scale equates to 8.709 mm = 1 ft.

I will use track with a gauge of 16.5 mm and so this will be just about 2 ft gauge.

I purchased some V skip trucks to carry the ore.

These are resin with some metal parts.

Modelling Projects / 1/35 AFV Club Bussing NAG L4500S
« on: May 20, 2021, 02:04:43 PM »
Hi all, sorry for the lack of post, health problems and so on.
Anyway I started this a few years ago and came across it while sorting out my models and model room.
It was to be part of my V2 models display, but I never finished it.

Well I have started another project and this might just fit the bill, I may have to convert it to a tipper version, but time will tell.

Anyway it has inspired me to get some modelling done.

Modelling Projects / 1:35 American Civil War Confederacy
« on: March 04, 2021, 08:28:58 AM »
While the moat on the Beverley Gate cures. this will be the start of the next project/possible diorama, It really depends on how the figures turn out.
It must be Civil Wars that fascinate me, I have no idea why.
I have always had an interest in The American Civil War and watched the TV program on it many years ago.
I think it may be that photography was used and they provide a real, if posed record of the people and times.

This set from ICM contains 4 figures.

Hi all just an update, I have been without a computer for the last 2 weeks, it is off for repair, they are awaiting parts -the hinge broke, but luckily it was covered under insurance.
I am using a really old one and am not sure how long it will last.

CATCHING UP HAS BEEN A MAMMOTH TASK, I am sure I have missed some posts out, apologies to all.

Modelling Projects / The Siege of Scarborough Castle 1645
« on: January 13, 2021, 11:17:26 AM »
During the English Civil War, many changed sides depending on the wind and prevailing conditions.
One such was Sir Hugh Cholmley, who did this a few times, he ended up defending Scarborough Castle as a member of the Royalists' Forces.
The siege lasted 5 months and the main force laying siege was commanded by Sir John Meldrum, he survived a 200 foot fall from the cliffs but was later fatally wounded and command was taken over by Sir Matthew Boynton. So lots of local connections here.
Pirates were using the harbour and attacking coal ships going to London and so the town and port were seized but the castle was not seen as that important. Presumably the batteries at the castle could harass the harbour and shipping and eventually it was laid siege to.

The castle was bombarded with the largest cannon then available - A Cannon Royal, this had a bore of 8 inches and fired a shot weighing 56-64 pounds.
There was also a battery just outside the castle know as Browne Bushell's battery, after Captain Bushell. Another one who changed sides many time. He was a naval Captain who ended up here and was eventually executed for piracy. He was from Whitby and was married to a Fairfax.

Modelling Projects / Polythene Figures
« on: January 02, 2021, 12:48:19 PM »
The 1/56 figures are proving to be small and quite a challenge and so.........................

This is really me revisiting something from 10 or more years ago.
I painted 1/32 polythene figures and thought I would try again.
I was sure I would find something on here from years ago, but no luck so far.
I think the post from the past was part of the blog, and that is not available now.
I sold all my previous efforts as well.

Anyway, it is a voyage of rediscovery.
I can't remember which method worked best, so I will try again.
The figures come on a sprue and so have to be cut off.
The plastic is very slippery and does not respond to sanding and gluing can be a trial.
I could give you a chemistry lesson but I will refrain.

Once cut from the sprue they were washed with detergent and water and rinsed.

The mould lines were removed with a hot pin and some judicious work with a sharp blade.

This is an attempt at heavier weathering to try to give a more worn appearance.
It still needs a varnish and the crew adding

Time for something a bit bigger, this is the Ausf D from Tamiya.
Again in Afrika Korps livery.
I will need some different figures though.

General Discussion / The problem with scale?
« on: November 20, 2020, 07:59:18 AM »
While modelling various vehicles of different scales I notice that there is a great discrepancy between figures that are supposed to be the same scale.
I accept that we all differ in size and stature, it never fails to amaze me how they can be so different.
While modelling 1:48 scale for the Battle of Britain, the size difference between the Airfix bruisers and those of other manufacturers cannot fail to be noticed.
I again saw the same in 1/35 figures from different manufacturers, and also in 1:56.
I can only presume that this applies to all scales and genres.

So after some digging and searching, the following emerges:
All figures are based on a supposed human size?
This size is generally taken as 5ft 3in - why, I don't know.
Where is this measured to?
The top of the head or eye level?
Some use one, some the other.
This may be where the problem arises.

In wargaming the scale size (1:72 and so on) is not really used, they use 28mm and so on, and this refers to the figure size.
In converting from one to the other, scale are never whole numbers and so, another discrepancy.

Modelling Projects / Foreign vehicles in German service
« on: November 02, 2020, 05:44:15 PM »
The Germans made much use of captured vehicles and captured countries vehicles.
What can this be.
Clue, another Marder?
It must be an older kit, lots of ejector pin holes to fill.

Hi all, as requested here is the Panzer Army so far.
I was not sure if this is what Andy wanted or an individual photo of each tank?
