Modelling Projects / D H 88 Comet
« on: August 17, 2020, 09:24:21 AM »
Whilst away in Devon I thought I'd start the DH 88 Comet in 1/48th scale. This is a relatively recent kit from MikroMir.
Thinking it it be a pretty straightforward build that would need few resources for the basic assembly before bringing it home for final painting etc.
NOT SO!
Starting, following the instructions, the engines are assembled first. Each engine consists of over 60 pieces and that includes etch brass. I have planned to only have one engine on view but the second has to be assembled without any the detail to enable the prop and exhausts to be fitted plus the front which can be seen through the inlet on the front cowl.
Add to that the fit leaves a lot to be desired, the instructions muddle the part numbers and some pieces are not included and others duplicated AND each component is really quite small, makes for an interesting build.
I have also started the undercarriage components, again lack of positive locations hampers progress.
Stay Tuned!

Modelling Projects / Filming the Battle of Britain 1968
« on: May 05, 2020, 11:54:14 AM »
So, finally got round to my next project for my Battle of Britain film collection.  This time it's a small diorama based on one of the very few photographs I have managed to find of the actual filming.
I thought a good starting point would be the ICM kit as this not only contains the 1/48th Spitfire IX but also a collection of figures and stands and steps.
The only real concern would be the 3 blade propeller and a bit of scratch building for the cameras etc.
Find out how it wasn't quite so straightforward in my next post!

Modelling Projects / P51H Mustang
« on: April 13, 2020, 01:44:24 PM »
As an antidote to the 3.7" HAA gun I have also been working on the 'Modelsvit's Mustang P51H.
This has gone together very well, the instructions are clear and the fit, surface details and general completeness of the package is as good as any main stream kit.
The P51H was used almost exclusively by the US ANG and the colours schemes adopted are as bright as any. The yellow nose, tail and wing tips of the Massachusetts ANG appealed so that's the scheme.
The photos I have posted show the stages from yellow trim, aluminium doped wings, black primmer for the Alclad coatings and finally the Alclad as applied. A lot of masking involved but it looks great once the all was revealed.
Stay with me to see the decaying and fitting of the details.
Great kit and I look forward to their P82 Twin Mustang.

In spite of the wet weather we had enjoyable day out and overall the overall numbers attending appeared to be much the same as on sunny day.

Modelling Projects / Bristol Fighter
« on: January 21, 2018, 10:15:20 AM »
Last week I completed the 1/48th Bristol Fighter. It's the Eduard kit and rigged mainly with E Z Line. The shorter runs I finished off with stretched sprue.

Modelling Projects / Never throw anything away!
« on: September 19, 2017, 11:08:45 AM »
Well, I have finally finished the AZ Kit of the Amy Johnson's Gipsy Moth. Not really an easy build but I'm happy(ish) with the result. I have put a snap of the model on the projects page to illustrate the practice of never throwing anything away. The 'Plans' on which the model is posed are from 'Aeromodeller' August 1958, which I have carefully kept over the years because I Knew they would be useful at some time!

Modelling Projects / A model of local interest
« on: June 09, 2017, 08:19:41 AM »
Started a model of the DH Gipsy Moth a last week. It's 1/48th scale by A model, a bit rough around the edges.
Having looked at the construction I decided to build it in sections, this would not only allow for an easier 'air- brushing' job with little masking required but also the individual assemblies such as the cowlings can be cleaned up once assembled. Check that various items, such as the motor, can be inserted afterwards.
I'll bring it along on Wednesday.

Modelling Projects / Another project with over-painted insignia
« on: March 31, 2017, 10:44:20 AM »
Yet another project which requires the overpainted/faded effects. At least this time it's a Spitfire. It will be at the next meeting, no prizes for guessing the subject!

Just to let you see a late stage of my Airfix 1/48th P40 build. Still has the decals and another layer of paint to go. What will it be? Hopefully you will find out at the next meeting.

Modelling Projects / Strippers
« on: February 19, 2017, 09:20:15 AM »
Now that I have your attention I will refer back to a conversation last Sunday at Huddersfield. Several members are discussing the best way to strip acrylic paint from a model. One favoured method was to paint the model in a product like 'Modelstrip' and leave overnight in a poly bag. A method for small areas is to use 'Purisol', available from Hannants. This can be painted on with precision using a brush, even neater if you use masking tape, and then cleaned off with a damp cotton bud. I have attached a couple of photos to show it being used on a cockpit transparency. You will see that it has cleaned off at least 5 coats of paint leaving perfect surface. There are, unfortunately, some spatters on the inside!

Modelling Projects / Modelling the Spitfire I
« on: May 14, 2015, 01:44:48 PM »
Thought I ought to use this forum again after last nights little talk.

Those who looked carefully at the Spitfire I on the table will have noted the overpainted RWBY roundels on both the fuselage and upper wing positions. This is how I did it; the fuselage was just a yellow disc which was then over-sprayed, whilst the wings had RWBY roundel transfers applied then over-sprayed. Note the sharp demarcation between the DE and DG as I was trying to depict the possible hand painting out of the yellow and blue of the original roundels.

Here's part of my next model. It's NOT a Spitfire! But what is it? All will be revealed at the next meeting. Bill
