Often called the above, also Tank Hunter, Tank Killer, usually an AFV for antitank duties.
Usually based on existing tracked vehicles, but may also be wheeled. Often with no turret or an open turret, A low silhoutte was desirable.
The U. S seemed to like a ?shoot and scoot? doctrine. The motto (Seek, Strike and Destroy) was used by the Tank Destroyers.
M6 Gun Motor Carriage
This was the first U.S. Tank Destroyer of the war
Modified Dodge 3/4 ton, WC52 truck with rear facing 37mm M3 gun mounted on the bed, designated WC-55.
The M6 was at a disadvantage as the gun had to be fired when facing to the rear. It was not really suited to more modern warfare and was soon replaced. The gun was fairly small calibre and could not deal with the more heavily armoured tanks. No armour, so the crew of 4 had little protection.
They had small arms for their own protection. Eighty rounds of the 37mm ammunition could be carried.
-
The model I have is from Italeri in 1:35 scale.
This must be an older kit, it has sink holes and some flash, so lots of cleaning up was required.
Some filling as well, the fit of the parts was not great.
Construction followed the kit instructions, some difficulty was encounted fixing the body parts to the chassis and some trimming was required to get a snug fit.
In general lots of fiddling about to get the parts to sit right, Gun assembly was not too good.
One figure is supplied and I have managed to cobble together a driver from the spares box.
-
Here it is painted awaiting weathering.
I did most of this before Telford.
-
I would like to have done the M3 with a 75mm gun, but the only one I can find is from Dragon and the price is putting me off.
-
Hi Zak,
That looks great.
Are you a magician?, you seem to produce kits like pulling rabbits out of the hat!
Nice work
Kevin
-
Shaded in the first photo.
Highlights/ dry brushing in the second.
Then some weathering with pastels and chalks.
Must remember to rust the exhaust as well.
-
You on steroids again Dave. Fast and good work.
-
Weathered.
Just about finished.
-
Have started an M10, this is basically a Sherman chassis with a turret with no top.
This had a M4A2 Hull with a semi-open turret and reduced armour.
It had a crew of 5, commander, loader, gunner, driver and assistant driver.
This was the most numerically the most important tank in the Second World War.
Sometimes referred to by its nickname "Wolverine".
I have the Academy version, some filling and cleaning up of parts was required, but the generally felt crisp and well moulded.
I assembled various sub assemblies and then painted them. The hull interior was undercoated and then sprayed white and the seats and other parts brush painted in the appropriate colours.
The inside was masked and all parts then undercoated. Once dry several coats of Olive Drab were sprayed on ? this is my own mix of Tamiya 62, the odd green and so on with a small amount of gloss varnish added.
-
On with the colour, another coat still needed.
-
Here is the interior, not much visible one the top is on though!
-
Good detail there Dave. I guess at the rate you're building this will be ready for the next meeting?

I'm not sure, there may be a diorama as well. I can't decide.
-
You're really cracking on with these. Not much happening down the allotment then?

Well I spent the morning walking along Filey sea front and then the town, this afternoon down the Paddy Field - alias the allotment.

No doubt, doing some research for your current project.
-
Decals applied.
Instead of Klear, I used Tamiya Gloss varnish, the Klear seems to darken the colour a lot, so I thought that I would try this.
I am not sure I like the way those decals are sitting - time will tell.
-
Not bad at all.
-
Hmm, I see what you mean they don't seem to have settled well.
-
They do look good, you do crack on once you?ve started.
Oh c
-
Hi Zak,
Did you use any decal solution's? to encourage them to settle.
Interesting to see you have used Tamiya Gloss rather than Kleer. Might have to try that on a future project.
Cheers,
Kevin

Yes Microsol/set, I used the Tamiya, as the Klear seemed to darken the Olive Drab a lot.
-
I have been trying to build a suitable diorama for my M10 GMC,
I am not too sure as yet, time will tell.
It is a building with an arched gateway, I started off in stone, but ended up in brick.
Lots of work and thinking needed yet.
-
Looking good
-
Hi Zak,
I like it a lot.
Cheers,
Kevin
-
Cobbled road added with DAS air drying clay.
Needs to dry and then the cobbles need to be carved a bit more.
-
That looks like some work there Dave.
Looking good.
-
Still waiting for the DAS to dry.
-
The road is laid better than the councils efforts!
Kevin
-
Looking good.
-
Ah the things I could do if we didn't live in a bijou two up, two down cottage. That's my excuse for not making many dioramas anyway!! It does look good Zak.
-
More progress, grass, now need some weeds and other stuff.
-
"Hello little weed" for our younger readers, thats from Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men - just ask Neil at the next meeting - hohohho
-
Meanwhile, the Tank destroyer has had a pin wash with diluted oil paint, a drybrush and a coat of matt varnish. Then some slight weathering.
Figures next.
-
Looking good.
-
Finished - if a model is ever finished?
Figures added.
-
Hi Zak,
That looks very atmospheric. Are the figures those that came with the kit? or some generic figures from other kits.
Another variant off the list.
Cheers Kevin
-
I like the building, the M10 it all looks very nice.

MiniArt Figures, none were supplied with the Gun Motor Carriage.
-
Excellent Dave.
-
Thanks Chris.
-
Looks GREAT
-
Possibly the final configuration, but who knows?
Maybe some trees, weeds and other clutter?
-
Great diorama.
-
Very nice.
Bob c
-
Tree making in progress.
The essentials:
Wire of various diameters
Masking tape
Wire cutter/strippers
Solder
Soldering iron
Polytex
Scissors
Blue Tac
4 hands at least
-
Great trees - I never thought to leave some of the outer sheath on the wires, to give you thickness. I always strip all the wires down and then wrap them round each other to get the thickness - another idea to steal from you - hohoho
-
Trees sprayed brown and some Woodlands Scenic Foliage added.
-
Looking Treemendous!
Nice work.
Kevin
-
Treely Good -here we go............................
-
Nice to see you still branching out on dioramas
Kevin
-
Nice trees to add the finishing touch Dave.
-
I think I had added one tree too many, I may remove one.
-
The trees really round off the diorama.
-
I then decided I would make a small diorama for the M6 Tank Destroyer, M6 GMC.
-
Should it be hidden behind trees or a damaged building?
A trawl of the t'interweb gave me some ideas, as usual it is all getting out of hand!
-
Will you finish it with all your ideas?
-
Who knows.
The sign on the building was had painted and the bricks are card chads stuck down painted and mortared.
-
Excellent
-
You could butt these last two dioramas together to make a larger one.
-
Who knows.
The sign on the building was had painted and the bricks are card chads stuck down painted and mortared.
Was the sign name inspired by the recent cold weather?
-

Google it, it is a French wine aperitif!
-
Outstanding trees and another great building.
Bob c
-
I am unsure about the building, it appears a bit too large and dwarfs the Dodge, so I may go with something like this.
-
Yes I agree - everything in proportion as the saying goes. You could use the building as part of a larger diorama with other models in the futur ::) ::) ::)
-
Diorama looks great Dave.
-
Started this Dragon kit on the modelling day'
Again 1:35 scale and an M3 Gun Motor Carriage with a 75mm gun.
A better tank destroyer than the M6, but still not fully tracked like the later M10.
The driver was with the kit, the other crew members are from the Tamiya M3A2 Half track kit.
-
I wouldn't like to be the driver with that thing over my head. Great Dave.
-
Hi Zak,
Another good looking model in the collection.
Bet those in the drivers compartment are hoping for ear defenders from Santa......Hohoho.
Kevin
-
Hi Zak
That?s another nice destroyer to your collection.
Bob c
-
I also built the Tamiya Half track.
I just need to add an aerial and come up with a display base for the two half tracks.
The last photo was for inspiration.
-
Hi Zak,
Nice work. The picture certainly gives a start point for inspiration, I'm sure you will have enough M3 Half tracks completed.
Cheers,
Kevin
-
That?s another nice model Zak.
Bob c
-
That?s another nice model Zak.
It is the one I got for ?20 at Lincoln - like you.
Bob c
-
Very nice Dave.
-
Old style
-
Atmospheric or what?
-
Good photo. Definitely dark and brooding.
-
Could be the start of a new genre, photos of finished models in black and white? Would certainly suit some time periods.
-
Some of us are old enough to actually appear in Black and White photograph's.
Unfortunately.........
Kevin
-
Lovely photo, I think models look great in black and white.
Bob c

Here is the Tamiya 1:35 Archer, described on the box art as a Self Propelled Gun.
This was built on a lengthened Valentine chassis. An unusual feature is the gun points to the rear.
Looks like a British take on the US Gun Motor Carriage.
Built from the box, including the figures.
Here it is in a pristine state awaiting pin washes, dry brushing and weathering.
-
Here you are!
-
Hi Zak,
A nice looking model.
Look forward to seeing it at the club.
Cheers,
Kevin
-
Certainly an odd-ball vehicle. Looking very nice.
-
Back to some modelling after the chaos of Christmas.
Dry brushing and a little weathering and a coat of varnish,
Still need to weather and muddy the tracks.
-
The jury is still out on the way to display this!
-
Where is the driver's seat?
-
Where is the driver's seat?
At the front, which is the rear with respect of the gun.
-
Where is the driver's seat?
Anatomically, it is normally found at the top of the legs...............Ho, ho, ho
Kevin

Don't confuse Chris.
-
Looks a nice build. Wanted one for ages but never got round to buying it.
It would be good firing from inside a destroyed building.
Bob c
-
Now onto the Tamiya Achilles, a British conversion on the M10.
Fitted with a 17 pounder gun Mk.V
-
Fresh from the paint shop.
-
Billy Whiz of Bempton or what!
Looks very nice.
Kevin
-
Test fitting the figures into position.
-
Looks great the figures put it into persective and scale and other words that you can come up with - hohhoho
-
Another Bempton Blitz Build. Great work.
-
Test fitting the figures into position.
Those figures look very realistically animated. Will be interesting to see it at a meeting.
Kevin
-
Also working on a setting for the Archer.
The stuff on the barrel will eventually be scrim like camouflage, I hope.
-
Almost the final diorama, perhaps one or two tweaks, maybe some static grass and a bit of shading.
-
Excellent Dave. Great diorama.
-
Excellent Dave. Great diorama.
Thanks Chris.
-
Nice work.
A nice diorama, to set off a nice model.
Kevin
-
Weird looking machine but a great looking model.
Bob c
-
Working on some figures, attempting to improve my skills.
they are 1:35 for the next diorama.
-
Looking good Zak.
Getting the shading right brings them really to life.
Look forward to seeing them on a future project.
Kevin
-
Looking good.
-
Shading great what model are they going to enhance :o :o :o :o
-
Great figures Zak.
Bob c
-
Working on a backdrop for the tank destroyer to sit in,
This will be a ruined factory made from card.
-
GREAT - all individual bricks I expect
-
Looks good. Upto your usual standadd Dave.
-
GREAT - all individual bricks I expect
Of course.
The courses were all hand laid.
-
Super stuff.
Always amazed how you create such realistic brickwork.
Kevin
-
More progress.
-
More bits of card stuck together.
-
Looking very nice.
-
What type of glue do you use to fasten the card together ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
-
What type of glue do you use to fasten the card together ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
PVA, but a little patience is required.
-
Thats me out then - hohoho
-
Stick with it Zak!
-
A coat of Shellac to seal the brick surfaces.
-
Then a layer of grout for the mortar courses.
Then its painting individual bricks.
-
Excellent - I have a bricky job in the garden, are you available - hohohhohoh
-
My bricklaying is like Winston Churchills, a bit dodgy in real size.
Bricks painted, walls given a wash, windows to make and add and lots more detail.
-
Exquisite Dave.
-
Thanks Chris.
Windows constructed from clear plastic card and styrene strips, the clear plastic was removed to give broken windows.
-
Yep. I like the boken panes.
-
Does look good Dave.
Bob c
-
More progress, adding some rubble, door and trying a figure for size.
-
Great work, giving me inspiration for a building I have to work on and paint.
-
Looking good.
-
Hi Zak,
Really like the windows and the broken ones. Really sets the scent.
Kevin
-
Hi Zak,

Kevin
I didn't know you could smell it, {Scent in place of sense - predictive text or your chill spucker.}
Sorry I couldn't resist!
-
I smell a case of finger trouble......
It was meant to read 'It really sets the scene'
One to Zak. Nil to Kevin
-
Pavement added and more painting and adding details, like broken glass, bricks and so on.
-
Dyslexia lures ko!!!
Rubble looking good.
-
I think I have just about finished, but will add some more bits as I keep looking no doubt.
-
Excellent photos Dave. The model's great too.
-
Very nicely staged.
Looks just right in that setting.
Kevin
-
Another great model and diorama.
-
That looks great.
Bob c
-
Thanks for the comments.
Now back on track and its onto the Italeri offering of the M36 B1 Tank Destroyer.
This version has a 90mm gun.
Many were field conversions from existing Sherman Tanks and they were used during the Normandy landings.
At the moment I am construction the base for the display of this and the M36 Jackson offering from Academy.
Photos later.
-
Base under construction.
-
More road works and wall building.
-
Great model BUT no pot holes in the road ??? ??? ??? ???
-
Great model BUT no pot holes in the road ??? ??? ??? ???
There will be, have patience!
-
Great fast work on the road construction, looks really effective.
Kevin
-
Really nice Dave.
-
Really good road and walls Zak.
