Next project is the Russian Protected Cruiser Varyag - she was commissioned in 1901 at the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia.
This is the Zvezda model with Eduard etch brass set. When built she will be placed in the Suez Canal on her way to Port Arthur in the far east.
The final fate of the ship was, she was sunk at the Battle of Chemulpo Bay - raised by the Japanese and commissioned into the Japanese navy as the "Soya" - returned to the Russians in 1916 during World War One . She returned to Russia but was in such a bad condition she was sent to Birkenhead for repairs. Overtaken by the Russian Revolution and left to rot, sold for scrap in 1920 and went aground on coast of Scotland while on tow and scrapped in situ until 1925.

Wow, lots of lovely brass to drive you nuts. Looking forward to this one.
Haddock.
-
Please get it right , the brass will send me "even more NUTS"
-
Don't get brassed off!
-
have you been watching a DVD about brass bands - hohoho
-
Two parts of the hull fastened together and a dry run with the three sections of the deck.
Now to mark the hull and "hack off" the lower section to waterline the hull.
-
Hull now waterlined.
Last photo shows the zigzag ladders removed on the port side and remaining on the stardboard side - both will be replaced by etch brass
-
The planking looks to be nicely engraved, should be fun picking out the planks.
Haddock.

Haddock.
Yes they are ( very very impressed with all the Zvezda models I have made, excellent quality and fit ) now for a very small brush and lots of naughty nautical language - hohohoho
-
green anti-fouling paint added to the hull. The 3 sections of the main deck have had the base coat , now to start picking out individual planks.
-
Why not just give it a "sludge" wash and wipe it off.
Haddock.
-
Right hand section shows the individual planks picked out with different colours.
Then a dry brushing of the base coat over the top on the right hand section, to calm down the overall colour.
-
Very impressive, I don't think my eyes and hands would let me do that.
Haddock.
-

Haddock.
Its Panto season -- Oh yes they would - hohoho
-
Left hand section has now had a coat of Flory "dark dirt" weathering wash - used and removed when dry.
Thank you Tony for the idea and the bottle of wash to try.
-
All 3 sections of the deck now had a coat of Flory wash and then fixed to the hull
-
Looking shipshape!
-
Hohohoho what about the Bristol fashion ???/
-
Back to the "Dark Side" -- that will keep Haddock happy
The stern superstructure showing the plastic part and the brass replacement - now to pick out the individual planks on the new brass deck and then cut off the solid surround on the plastic part that will be replaced with the brass rails.
-
Underside view of the hull and deck showing the small brass tube fastened through the deck. These are to allow the rigging to be passed through and fastened underneath and out of sight -- thank you Haddock for the idea.
-
Like the decking. Looks like a very involved kit.
Well done.
Andy.

Hi Msea,
Looking very good, and using a 'Haddock Moment', see the club and website has its uses.
Now you just have to show 'Haddock' that you are the next 'Master' in the dark side of modelling.
No pressure then....!
Cheers,
Bigkev

Stop Haddocking around and get on with it. (A new phrase enters the English Language - )

So another ship builder in the club. When's the launch?

I take it this is a technique rather than part of the kit build? Be interesting to see biplane builders use this too ;D
-
Bi-plane builders don't need to go through two levels of plastic!!
-
Hi Haddock,
Don't biplanes have two wings?
Normally each wing is moulded in one piece, does that count as two levels of plastic,
Just a thought...
Bigkev
-
Hold on to that thought Kev...it may get lonely ;D
-
Hi Wizzel,
Imagine the sound of a 'Raspberry!
Bigkev
-
The skylights have been removed and the holes drilled out and some brass one fitted to the right hand side
-
A lot of work.
-
It will keep Haddock happy
-
Excellent Msea,
Showing us your undoubted skills at every post.
Bigkev
-
Keep it up, I'm feeling lonely.
Haddock.
-
Funnels now have all detail removed and holes for the wires drilled. Coat of paint given and now seen in the photo they need a lot of sorting out along the demarcation line yellow/black -- or Haddock will be chastising me for sloppy work.
Don't you just hate photos that show every blemish and mistake -- oh well just remember is a hobby and only for FUN.
-
Biplane builders drill blind holes in the underside of the top wing and completely through the bottom wing.
Glue in the top, pass through the bottom, stretch and glue! I know, one of them told me!!!
-
You little clever clogs Red

You little clever clogs Red
Thing is, Red lancer has better a memory than most.
Bigkev
-
Now if Red is the person I think he is - you will get a clout next meeting for that comment Kevin - and he is near enough to me to throw a brick through the window and still stay 2m apart - so I am saying nothing about age - hohoho
-
Wonderful modelling and all to 1/35oth scale!
I can't even go to that depth of detail in 1/48th!!!
Respect Brother Haddock. No wonder you win all those classes at model competitions.

Just got off the phone with Haddock, and to prove I was telling the truth about next model to be worked on here is the photo ( Varyag like a lot of my models finished and under construction have been boxed and put in the garage while I have some new furniture in my room - that was to be a quick job but covid 19 has got in he way )
So am now re-reading the instruction sheets and finishing a couple of bits and bobs and then back on with the Varyag, that will keep Haddock happy and as we all know a Happy Haddock makes everybody happy.
-
A happy Haddock, no lets not go there, what a frightening thought (add this to the list Tony).
-
looking forward to seeing this finished!
-
Oops, sorry folks, thought there was some activity here, must have been day-dreaming.
Back to my own little world.
-
Gentle hint - yes I will do some more - still trying to get my room sorted.
-
Not so gentle hint - you've been at this since last November - almost a year!
Still it is not on the Shelf of Shame!
-
Looking very good Martin. I like what you've done with the decks.
-
This will keep Haddock happy - more work done on this model..
Will rig the funnels when dry and at the moment bending (yes using naughty nautical language) small brass bits to fit on the deck - how do you do it Haddock.
-
Heck, I've come over all funny.
Welcome back!!
-
Sorry to give you a funny turn, do you sing and dance when you are doing the funny turn - hohohohoho
-
This been in dry dock for a while?
-
Sorry to give you a funny turn, do you sing and dance when you are doing the funny turn - hohohohoho
Sailors horn-pipe!!

I now have that image in my head :o ??? :P ??? :o :-[
-
More work done with the brass replacements
-
Looking good - very neat.
-
Looking good.
-
Nice!
-
Great work there MSea.
-
More work done on the brass work and also a start made on fastening down the ford funnel
-
Again, nice!
Haddock
-
Again, nice!
Haddock
Thank you Master
-
Good work Martin.
-
All 4 funnels now fastened down - am going for a coffee and let the air in my room turn from blue back to clear air - hohoho
-
Decided to have the Varyag going through the Suez Canal - so need some Arab dhows , so started carving one from some MDF.
Will see how it goes and may need to convert to carved out of plastic or construct from plastic sections.

Hi Msea,
If it was me doing this, it wouldn't be Dhows, it would be more of 'Dooh's' ( a'la Simpson's)
look forward to Dhow's and not to 'Dooh's'
Cheers,
Bigkev

Tony will be proud of you Martin.
-
Not with the quality that I turn out next to his excellent models - know your place and keep trying is my motto.
-
Work done on the ships vents.
Decided to place the ship on a wood base that I had made a long time ago for another model and have it on a section of water with arab Dhows ( or to keep Kevin happy Doohs) around her. Have added some felt feet to the wood and will give it a rub down and then a coat of varnish - then its time to decide if I will grind out a thin section of wood to put the water in or have it standing proud of the wood - decisions decisions decisions :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Looking good.

WOW! I like.
-
Whatever you do will look great. Are you having Arabs selling things from the dhows?
-
YES do you want to put in an order for something ??????
-
Section of wood cut out with a chisel and then cleaned up - before you ask the pencil marks are showing the holes drilled at 45 degrees, so the first layer of paste will key to the wood base.
-
I've just sent my galabeyas from the Nile criuse to the charity shop so I'm ok thanks. Good tip re keying in plaster.

Is it ordinary interior filler stuff? I mix some with PVA to get it to bond.
-
Hi All,
Lots of great tips found in this build,
Bigkev
-
Hi Red the paste is modeling paste by pebeo, got it from the Hobby Store in Hull a few years ago at reduced price - as you would expect - hohoho.
When the ship is finished and embedded in the final layer of paste will colour it and then use some gel to give it a final finish, this dries clear and gives a depth and shine to the water.
-
A very interesting build and methods.

Hi Msea,
The above is very interesting. I have a couple of 'wet' projects that I might need to utilise the above description and method.
I know where to get advice if I get stuck.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Four of the 6inch guns put together - when solid the brass bits to be add - listen for the naughty nautical language.
-
Brass fitted to first gun - now going for a coffee
-
Looking great.
Bob c
-
Looking good. How was the coffee?
-
Thanks to you both - the coffeeeee was needed after trying to add the brass lifting eyes.
Decided that I will now drill two 1/2mm holes to fit the brass bits in so they don't fall over before they are fixed solidly - only another 7 guns to go - MORE COFFEEEEEE
-
MSea one - Carpet Monster Nil.
Dropped one of the brass lifting eyes last night and decided the carpet monster was NOT GOING TO WIN - found it this morning ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Result ! !
-
A good win there!
-
My carpet monster has enough parts to build a small ship!
-
Outstanding skills on show. 8)
-
My carpet monster has enough parts to build a small ship!
You did have to go and mention the carpet monster didn't you. Just lost a piece of glazing about 6mm square. Drat.
-
You WILL find it - mine was about one by one and half mm- but it did take me 2 days.
-
I also have a cushion floor monster that eats parts!!!!
-
One of the 2 guns on the ships alongside the wheelhouse.
The triangular plastic base will be cut off and the barrel added to the etch brass base - would anybody even know ???? Haddock would and he take me to task, so onward with the etch brass.
-
Six inch gun painted and first photo shows it close up and the second one shows what most people will see at the distance they will look from.
-
Hi Msea,
Nothing wrong with them Matey.
Keep it up.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
The 2 guns alongside the wheelhouse have now had the barrels removed from the plastic bit and fastened to the etch brass base.
-
Some of the 75mm guns mounted along the ships sides and the two 63.5mm Baranovsky guns alongside the wheelhouse.
-
Excellent work Martin.
-
I agree. He's got a steadier hand than me to achieve that!!!
-
Thanks C & C - but still trying to get to 50% Haddock standard.
-
A noble aspiration Martin and I think you're well over the 50% threshold.
-
Thank you Francis but not when you see what the master can produce - as I always say "know your place"
-
Some of the 75mm guns mounted along the ships sides and the two 63.5mm Baranovsky guns alongside the wheelhouse.
Phew!!!
-
Ten more guns and four other bits added to the ship - bet you can't even notice them.
-
The joys of shipbuilding!

The joys of slow shipbuilding
-
Looking great Martin.
-
This is shaping up well Martin.
-
She must have a full head of steam up with the bow lifting, lol!!!
-
Start made on the resin L'Arsenal Arab dhow.
-
Wow, that's a small boat.
This is going to be a cracking build.
-
Sorry Andy but its back to the drawing board for the Dhow.
Decided that as it was a gift from Haddock, I had better do it right and rig it, instead of just gluing the paper sail to the resin mast.
Will have to replace the mast with brass rod and then use the original resin mast as the sails top bar, even if I was extra specially careful with the rigging it would break the weak resin mast - and you all know I don't tend to be extra careful at the best of times.
-
Nobody will notice but the ships ribs and hatch covers have been painted with a different colour brown.
The new brass rod mast has now got 3 sets of rigging for the mast on each side.
-
Starting to look very Arabian.
-
Cripes - that's small! Looking very good Martin.
-
I thought you said you weren't very patient? You must be to work in this scale.
-
Looking good Martin.
-
Cripes - that's small! Looking very good Martin.
Small is beautiful,......even Martin

I'm right off Arab at the moment!

Only a thought...!

At my age!!!!
-
Boat walkways have now been started first 2 photos show the plastic part and the solid sides of the walkway. The etch brass has the correct rails to add to the plastic and the last photo shows the solid sides removed - next job is to remove some of the plastic cross bars which will also be replaced with etch brass ( get ready for the nautical language)
Now who will even notice this improvement - yes of cause Haddock, so on with the brass replacements till the backs tells me to stop.
-
Etch brass fastened to the plastic and then the rails turned up into the correct position.
-
Great work, back a bit better?
-
Thanks Zak - back is on the mend but will have to do just a little at a time and not push it.
-
Walkway added
-
That looks good, bet you're pleased it's done.
Haddock.
-
Excellent stuff MSea,
I'm getting the urge to build a ship of some kind, maybe when I get the Lanc done.
-
Thanks Haddock.
We will hold you to that Andy - now which ship will you make ??????
-
Thought maybe a 1/32nd Peasholm Park 'Swan pedalo' from Scarborough.
-
Thought maybe a 1/32nd Peasholm Park 'Swan pedalo' from Scarborough.
Will look forward to seeing that one made - hohohho
-
More vents added to the area around the funnels.
-
Martin, you are going great guns with this one.
-
No the guns have been done its the vents I am on with - hohohohohoho
Just reading the latest issue of "Fantasy Figures International" magazine and one of the articles has got me thinking about my next model - it will be based in Bempton and will include a little figure of a wizard - now all I need is a trip to Mighty Lancer to get the figure - YOHOHOHOHO

Try his mail order service.
-
Thanks Zak - I have done in the past BUT I need to see the faces to get the correct "warped and twisted" look - hohohohoho
-
Walkways on the model look great Martin. Glad to see you back active.
-
Thanks Chris - just doing a little bit at a time and still reading between model sessions.
-
It's looking great, Martin.
I hope your back is holding up1
-
Thanks Howard - back is OK but I am only doing a bit of modelling at a time - giving the back a chance to sort itself out.
-
Work on the steam cutters - the photo is from the Super Drawings in 3D by Stefan Draminski.
The 2 plastic sections have been fastened together and when cleaned up will have the funnel replaced with brass tube and other very very very small brass bits. So listen for the naughty nautical language - and sorry Haddock for the low quality of the brass work.
-
First photo is the rudder and prop in plastic and the second shot is the replacement brass bits.
-
New brass rudder fitted to the smallest boat a 4 oared launch.
Had to cut a small groove in the aft end of the boat to help hold the brass rudder until it had been held by the glue.
-
Not bad brasswork Martin. Better than mine.
-

Great patience, Grasshopper.
Bigkev
-
I draw the line at 1/144 so when you guys work in scales like this it amazes me!!!
-
Brass rudders added to each boat and portholes added to one of the steam launches. The smaller boat has been painted with the inside hull white and some of the bits picked out in brown.
-
Very nice.
-
Keep at it.
-
Thought the 2 small boats finished - with brass oars added but looking at the photo its back to the cleaning up and paint on the bow of the top boat - don't you just hate photos - hohohhoho
-

They can be a blessing in disguise.
-
Nice bit of work going on there MSea. Do the kits compare favourably to other manufacturers? I really do want to have a go at a floaty thing soon but don't fancy paying £50 for a kit then having to buy brass on top of that.
-
Hi Wizz - I like Zvezda kits but you do need to get the brass to finish then off.
All the small boats have now had the oars fitted - now who will notice them - Haddock of course
-
Well done. I think they would try my patience!
-
The brass does mine Red - so its do a bit and then change to do something else, I don't know how Haddock can do it for so long.
-
2 replacement brass walkways added for the boat stations
-
Looking very nice Martin.
-
Exquisite Msea,
Not You, the oars in the boats and the walkways!
Bigkev
-
Don't try and rush to finish a bit before you have tea.
The first photo shows the small walkway at 90 degrees to the large walkway and the second photo shows the last one I did before being called for food - yes it had not fully dried and has moved to fasten itself onto the side of the walkway. So its out with the debonder when I feel like messing about and am in a calm frame of mind.
-
This stuff has a mind of it's own sometimes.
Show it who's boss!!
-
This stuff has a mind of it's own sometimes.
Show it who's boss!!
I know the order -- You first -etch brass second -and me a long long way behind in third - hohohoh
-
Thanks, I mis-read your first post, thought it came with the brass. I'll hang fire until I've found a decent priced kit that comes with a bit of brass first and see how I get on with it.
Any recommendations? Nowt too complex mind you!
-

Try the Trumpeter USS England, a small destroyer with some brass included but non for the main deck.
You would have to get that from say Atlantic models as generic railings.
Haddock.
-
Now sit down Haddock and take deep breaths - yes I am back on the Varyag - yes its been 3 months BEFORE somebody reminds me.
Remember the small section of brass etch rail that turned 90 degrees before setting hard - well its been removed. After talking with the experts ( well the committee members at the last meeting) decided not to use de-bonder but to cut it off and replace with other brass. As I was cutting, it pinged off and i have now spent a happy 20mins fighting the carpet monster to get it back. This time fastened it in place with tacky wax and then superglued it- hope there is not a reaction between the 2 glues , time will tell.
-
Ladders added to the outside of the funnels ( one of the worst job at sea was working inside the funnels - its amazing were the soot can get ) also the second photo shows the hatch covers on the steps - only another 7 to make.
-
Martin 1 carpet monster 0 - after extra time.
-
Thanks Chris - I don't win many - hohohho
Bridge now fitted to the ship.
-
Looking really good.
-
Nice Msea,
Keep at it.
Bigkev
-
Nearly done, keep at it.
-
Coming together nicely Martin.
-
You're getting there. As the song goes 'the slower you go, the longer it lasts'.
-
Two more steps made and added to the aft accommodation
-
Great work. I thought you said you didn't have any patience?
-
The detail is looking excellent Martin.
-
Some work done on the bridge - rails and ladders.
Thanks for the comments and Chris when I say I have no patience just think about Haddock - he starts a ship, finishes a ship twice as good as I could ever do and then has the patience to go onto another ship. I can only work on a ship/etch brass for a short while and then have to change onto something else to give what is left of my brain a chance to recover. So well done Haddock you little hero
-
Excellent detail, well done.
-
Thanks Zak
More work done on the aft superstructure and the magnetic compass added.
-
Starting to look very ........nautical! Looks good.
Haddock
-
Thank you master - usually the only nautical in my room is the "naughty nautical language" - hohohohho
-
Dear Son of Haddock,
You are becoming a great student of your master.
Looks excellent.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
looks really good.
Bob c
-
Thanks all
More rails, searchlights and bits and bobs added to the bridge area
-
Your Bits and Bobs look wonderful Msea........
Don't tell Joyce though........
Bigkev
-
A bit of remedial work on the 75mm gun - somehow its barrel has been lost, so drilled and a small brass rod fitted.
Now its dry have added a small section of Albion Alloys 0.8mm tube to form the barrel.
-
If it takes chopping things up as well as making Zombies to produce a great piece of work like this then the therapy appears to be working.
-
Yes Chris but the straps on this strange jacket don't help with the modelling -- hohohoho
-
Great modelling Martin.
-
Some work done on the ford mast - next job is fitting some small scale chain bits to use with the rigging
-
Are you catching up on unfinished models?
-
Have you tried black lycra thread for rigging?
You won't need chain, I'll bring some to "playday"to try.
That's if you can wait that long.
Haddock.
-
Yes Zak trying to finish some that got put on the shelf - I can wait for ever for information from you Haddock, its always worth the wait.
-
Yes Zak trying to finish some that got put on the shelf - I can wait for ever for information from you Haddock, its always worth the wait.
Are you trying to get on his good side - good luck with that -ha, ha !
-
He has a GOOD SIDE - now I know you are telling porky pies - hohoho - more like a clip on the ear on Sunday.
-
Work done on the 2 ships motor boats - see Haddock look out of the window and see if you can see the pigs flying by - hohohoho
-
A whole squadron just went by.
-
HoHoHo you little wag you.
-
Nice detail Martin.
-
First brass etch replacement davit under construction - next job is to get out the reamers and clean out the lightening holes in the davit - memo to self "be careful and gentle" - as if that will ever happen ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
First photo is the plastic part from the kit the second one shows what is left after the redundant parts have been removed
-
They'll keep you busy.
-
Very nice.
-
More work done on the davits - the lightening holes have had to be drilled out and enlarged with reamers, after the 3 sections glued together
-
More work done on davits
-
Oh, the joy of ship modelling!
-
You always get value for money..........
......even if it doesn't sometimes feel like it at the time.
Might this one be finished some time soon?
Haddock.
-
Not in a month of Sundays Haddock, the speed I am going at it and don't forget the breaks from it when I need a change
-
Very nice detail Martin. I'm sure you'll have it done for the next club meeting.
-
Very nice detail Martin. I'm sure you'll have it done for the next club meeting.
Just spotted a sqadron of pigs flying past!!
Haddock.
-
Yes Haddock they have just flown past my window as well - think it will be a while to get this finished, the brass davits etc are very slow work, but as long as I am enjoying the making its OK with me.
I have never been bothered about having finished models to show people, its the actual making of the model I enjoy. That could be why I flit from model to model and put them down when the FUN/ENJOYMENT is not at full level. BEFORE anybody take me to task for my comments - just remember its a hobby and not life or death ( that's football - hohohho)

For me it is the process as well, keeps me busy, but maybe not out of mischief!
-
Ditto
-
I agree

Patience is a virgin... or summink like that!

-
Bits added to the ford mast, and this fitted into place
-
Looking good Martin.
-
Ford, is still quite annoying, a bit like "Playday". I do like to grump!
What is wrong with "forrard!" Or any combination of!
-
OK I will do as you ask Zak - my combination will be "Ford" - hohohohohhoho
-
Will that make it a Ford convertible?
-
Think I have used super strong glue - so if the top comes off, its your fault Chris - hohohhoo
-
Is this the home run, or is that too much to expect?
Haddock.
(trembling in anticipation)
-
On the way - that's all I will say - yohoho
-
Work started on the aft mast
-
Support bars from the black hole in the deck up to the walkway - the plastic ones with the kit are 6 mm long and I need 8mm so will make some from the thin brass rod in the second photo.
-
Support bars fitted
-
More etch brass added to the aft mast
-
Aft mast fitted to the ship and ratlines added to both masts.
-
Nice work, are the ratlines etched?
-
Yes - much improved on the ones I made from thin wire Chinese battleship Chen Yuen
-
More work done on the bow and stern.
-
Another coat of plaster of paris added to the base
-
Ship now fastened down to the base and another coat of plaster added to sit the ship into the sea.
-
Very nice Martin particularly the rigging and ratlines. Will it be at the next meeting?
-
Yes Chris - as a work in progress - lots more etch brass to fit and also the ships boats
-
Will the sea be a darker blue?
Haddock.
-
Navy blue? Ha Ha!
-
Was thinking about more grey blue - or is that my mood - hohoho
-
New colour of sea in place, its just drying at the moment and the colour will be the pale grey/blue when it is all dry.
If the 1984 "colour police" are happy, then will give it a coat of translucent gel when fully dry
-
"Translucent gel" - I say what big words, I use Mod Podge.
-
Not the same as hair gel then?
-
What a pair of little wags - can't think of a suitable answer for you both at the moment. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Some highlights and lowlights added to the sea, when dry will look and see how they have blended in and maybe put a colour wash over the top to blend them some more, if needed.
-
Got the angle of the bow wave right?
-
We shall see or is it sea?
-
Coat of gel added and flicked into wave tops - now to let it dry and see the final product.
Then its on with added the rest of the hundreds of etch brass bits :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Frothy water again.
-
No Chris just still to dry and go clear
-
No Chris just still to dry and go clear
It dries clear?
-
Yes Chris - you will see tonight - if you look that is -- yohoho
-
Stern walk under construction - don't you just love etch-bras :o :o :o :o :o
-
The carpet monster has won - the small section of etch brass that forms one of the cages for the lifebelt at the stern has had to be remade, will clean it up and then paint it see how it looks - if OK will add to the model , if not try and make another improve one
-

No, not really!
-
I just don't know how Haddock does it and keeps so calm >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
