Reading a magazine article in the new Fantasy Figures International magazine about the "Lost Children of Pripyat" and decided that I would like to try and make a town sign like in the article.
So first thing was to change the name and then use the internet to translate into Russian lettering, then print off and stick onto some MDF. First letter cut out using my piercing saw - only another 5 to go.
Looked in the stash and found this set of Zvezda Russian Spetsnaz, decide they would look OK looking round the sign, might use all 4 or use only 2 and use the other 2 on a different Town sign.
-
Set in Croydon eh!
-
Not exactly
-
All the letters cut out and a start made on cladding the outside of the plinth with thin acrylic.
-
Is it Kilham? They're a strange lot there!!!
-
Even stranger than Kilham
-
Both sides of the plinth now added and clamped till they go solid.
The letters have been cleaned up and had a pin in each one and then primed.
-
Niceness. Should be fun watching this come together.
-
Thanks Wizz
-
Yes I am too looking forward to this.
-
Plaque to go on the front of the plinth - 1949 drawn on - drilled out - filed smooth.
Before you ask the date is the 100th anniversary of Neil's birth in 1849 - YoHoHo
-
All bits as well as the red star now fitted to the plinth
-
I really do like the worn, old and weathered effect you achieve with everything - especially us lot! It is very realistic.
-
Excellent Martin.
-
More work on the sign
-
Some work done on the base for the new Russian town - foam glued to the base with cocktail sticks to give it strength. A coat of Vallejo asphalt earth texture added to the road area.
Decided to make a change to the set up and not use the Zvezda figures - so watch out Chris - YoHoHoHoHoHo
-
Hi Msea,
Nice to see that the base is observing social distancing......not a zombie in sight.
Spoken too soon.........?

Watch out for what? Ho ho ho
-
Tape and liquid mask used to make the yellow strips in the center of the road. Next job some work on the rocks and grass/mud on the side of the road - then to add Chris's car YoHoHo
-
Rocks added to the back wall, when dry will add the grass/mud and then put in some shrubs, plants etc. Forgot will paint the rocks first dooh
-
Looks good.
-
Coat of black paint on the rocks and then dry brushed with grey.
-
Sign added to the top of the rocks - now to make some small trees/shrubs to fit into the rock face and some grass on the top surfaces.
-
First 2 shrubs made from wire and second photo shows them covered in PVA

Nice work Comrade. I'm looking forward to seeing those Spetsnaz figures.
-
Sorry Andy -- Spetsnaz have now turned into Chris, bet you didn't know he was Russian Army did you - hohohohoh
-
4 trees made and PVA and then coat of brown paint.
Some surfaces on the model now glued and green tea added, when dry will remove the excess and then add leaves and put them in the model.
-
Tree now has leaves, when dry will add to the rocks.
-
All looking very good Martin. You excell with the dioramas.
-
Thank you Chris - I try my hardest.
Am now going into the loft to find the model of you - keep your eyes out ---- YoHoHo
-
Hi Chris you are now out of the loft and I will convert the 4 figures into the same "sand people" in the middle of the photo.
Do you have any preference to the one that will be YOU - hohohoho Am now going to do some more on the Varyag cruiser before Haddock gets on my case.
-
Trees added to the model -think they need a little lighter green on the leaves so they stand out from the background.
-
Hi Msea,
Coming along nicely comrade.
Bigkev
-
Having a break from the Varyag etch brass -- so putting some different green colours on the leaves of the trees.
-
Making a start on winding strips on the figures

How about the one with the big gun!
Looking good.
-
So you wish to be the figure with the big gun - are you trying to compensate for anything ???? YoHoHo
Just started on a second vehicle to go on the road - this one has been converted from 4 seats down to 2 seats and with enlarged open back section.

Noooooo.
-
Glad we got that sorted out - YoHoHo
Just drilled out the eye sockets for you and all your squad of "sand men" Chris and also fitted bits of brass rod into the eyes. Next job brown paint, light brown for the bandages and black for the eye mask with silver on the brass rod ends. Unless you would like a fetching pink number ????????
-
Will that be 'sand pink' as per the desert landrovers? How many sets of these cars have you got? Haven't you converted something like them before?
-
Yes Chris - got a couple of sets in the old £1 shop -- you got 3 in a box for £1 so have had a few to try different conversions on.
"Sand pink" for Chris W" - not a chance it would be "very very very bright in your face pink" - hohohohoh
-
Bit more work done on the second car and a coat of rust - now what top colour shall I paint it ??????
-
Base coat of dark brown and then light brown fastenings on top of this.
Just for you Chris a "sand man" with a BIG gun - hohohoho
-
Warning - Chris has now got a very large "sand people" army, well he will have when they are converted - HoHoHoHo
I had forgotten how many I had - before you ask, it was £1 for a big plastic bag of them in the old £1 shop. As you can see from the photos they are not very good quality faces - that is why they were converted into sand people - so Howard could not say "the faces needed a little more work" on them :-* :-* :-*
-
Very good Martin. I think the car should be the desert pink or maybe sky blue.
Like the whole army. Should have a flag to go with them.
-
You asked for pink so pink it is - YoHoHo
-
Industrial strength pink!!
-
Yes! Looks the part!
-
All looks good.
Bob c
-
A lot of the pink now removed - next job MORE rust
-
Some maps made so the "sand people" army don't get lost - yohohoho
-
Cars and figures added to the base - a little more work to do on the cars.
Should I call this one "Are you sure Commander Chris can read a map" - or will I be in trouble again - YoHoHo
-
Looks great Martin, the maps look like something from Lord of the Rings.
-
Excellent Martin. But I can read maps!
-
Best way to learn map reading is to get lost first.
Looks great MSea. Well done.
-
Is that the squaddie in you talking?
-
As always, different.
-
GREAT to have you back on line Zak. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Why not give it some of your medication, it might help keep it running for longer.
