She was the first nulcear powered cargo/passenger ship and was launched in 1959, taken into service in 1962 and taken out of service in 1972.
First - thank you Haddock for the model - but it came with the proviso that he expected me to do something different/strange with it.
So lots of racking what is left of my brain and some ideas came to mind but not good enough I think to satisfy Haddock. Then it hit me ( no,not she who must be obeyed) but how was the ship greeted when she was launched and how would she be greeted now.
So she will be placed just leaving a long jetty with people on the left dressed in 1960 style with pleasure boats and greeting placards saying such things as "Go Savannah Go" and "Nuclear power is good and the future". The people on the right will be dressed in 2100 style with greenpease demonstration boats around her, and anti-nuclear posters. The sea will also change from bright blue and smooth on the left to darker and choppy on the right.
AND BEFORE SOME OF YOU COMPLAIN THAT THE MODEL IS POLITICALLY AND ENVIROMENTALLY BIASED - ITS JUST AN IDEA TO SHOW THE CHANGING ATTITUDES OF SOME PEOPLE OVER THE INTERVIENING YEARS. AND AS I ALWAYS SAY ITS JUST A MODEL AND ITS FOR FUN.
-
Didn't say you HAD to do something strange, just thought you might!! Since when does anyone take any notice of me?
Haddock.
Nice idea though but I think we need a vote on this.
-
Haddock you know that I hang on every word you utter.
YOU can sort out a vote if you like !!!!!!!!!
-
Looking at the instructions - a lot of work to make the nuclear reactor and then you put it into a solid plastic container and then you put that into the inside of the ship and cover it over - what a waste of time.
So will look to find a clear ring and put the nulear reactor inside this and then display that on the middle of the jetty, between the 2 sets of people. Yes I know it would NEVER be placed in that position - its only a model for FUN.
-
Don't forget to paint the reactor green - remember THE HULK.
-
Sorry Zak the instructions say its Silver / Orange / Red / Grey and you know I always do what I am told -- HoHoHo !!!!!!!!
-
I almost got a job a Calder Hall/ Windscale as it was then.
Paint it fluorescent green - go on you know it makes sense.
-
Sorry Zak but after 20 years with Shell green is NOT my most favorite colour.
They employed a psychiatrist to come up with a calming colour and it was "Eau de nil green" so it seemed everything was painted in this colour - after 20 years with everything painted with this - it drived me mad, so much for psychatrists.
-
Looking at the parts the weld detail on the hull is excellent, the moulded on rails will have to be removed and replaced with etch and a few sink holes to be filled.
BUT the aft and ford deck have been cast different ways up and the ford deck has 10 ejector pin marks to remove and the aft deck only five -- so WHY did they not cast this section the other way round to reduce the amount of clean up ???????
-
Could it be added modelling pleasure...........................?
Go on, fill those sink marks, ...................................oh, and smile.
Bigkev
-
The sink marks and the smile can wait - oh go on then thats a smile - its a shame you can't see it.
A base ring and base made for the reactor - a clear ring also cut from an orange bottle ( thats the drink, not the colour of the plastic before somebody asks ) The reactor is almost finished and will be displayed inside the clear ring.
-
Surely not Martin, not a clear ring, what about the lead shielding?
Where are the control rods?
Who designed this reactor?
-
I shall bring it to the next meeting - so if you are worried bring your lead apron - or is that in use for the "bake off " programme ???????
-
Hull primed and the railings removed - sink marks still to be filled.
Several decks painted green ( not flourescent -- sorry Zak )
-
What country was it registered with and where was it built?
-
Hi Zak she was built in Camden - New Jersey in USA, and was registered in Savannah Georgia.
-
Now you're nuclear powered, is the production rate going to increase dramatically?
Haddock.
-
Zoom zoom zoom -- off we go Haddock.
-
Bottom of the hull removed - zoom zoom zoom to please Haddock.
The 2 sections of deck house - one has had the molded on rails removed and the other has not -yet.
The last photo shows some of the new rails added to the stern steering position.
-
Looking good my friend!!
-
Great stuff Martin.
Dave (PTA)
-
Some more work done on replacing the molded rails with brass etch.
Thank you for the comments - still not as good as your standard -- but it fun and I enjoy it.
-
Looking good. You don't realize what a pain in the bum bending railings can sometimes be till you've had a go.
Haddock.
-
Maybe you should give Uri Geller a ring!
-
Could it be added modelling pleasure...........................?
Go on, fill those sink marks, ...................................oh, and smile.
Bigkev
Just for you Kevin -- sink marks filled and a BIG smile.
-
Ford and aft deck fitted and some work on other parts.
-
...are you sure that that bridge is not from Star Treck???
Nice work my friend
-
Don't give me ideas Kiteman - I could put a couple of large engines on the sides and boldly go ???
-
Don't give me ideas Kiteman - I could put a couple of large engines on the sides and boldly go ???
Haddock.
-
...bodly!
-
A few more decks added and still thinking about the couple of large engines on the side -- just for Kiteman.
-
Ta!.....Looking ship shape.
-
A few more decks added and still thinking about the couple of large engines on the side -- just for Kiteman.
Don't you dare!!
-
OK Haddock it will be finished as a ship not sci-fi. I know my place in the universe.
More bits added - will have to go back and work on the join between the front and sides of the ship
-
Go on.......turn it into a space... ship!
-
Haddock says NO so the answer is NO.
-
That's right Msea, do as the nice Mr. Haddock says.....................................
Or else, you'll get a thick ear!
Bigkev
-
Another thick ear - who from this time ?????????????????????
Some more rails added aft - I think they are an improvement on the original solid plastic ones !!!!!
-
More bits and bobs fitted - next job a coat of klear and then the transfers/decals.
-
Where's that reactor gone?
-
Its going on the jetty NEXT TO THE PEOPLE -seems a good idea to me.
-
Don't over react (or).
-
Why would I over react - its got a good solid bit of clear plastic stopping the radiation leaking out, since I threw out that old lead shielding.
Now who shall I make the figures standing next to it on the jetty look like ???????????
-
First transfers added.
-
Well I wonder who it will be?
-

Me to know you to find out !!!!!!!!
-
Could do with a few people looking out of the port-holes!!
Haddock.
-
....or even the starboard holes ;D
-
Boat davits cleaned up - lots of ejector pin marks removed and the flash scraped off.
The last 3 photos show - boat davits added - rails fitted between davits - and the boats in place.
-
Base made - now to decide who will be placed on the dock next to the reactor ?????????
-
Three mast units made and fitted -
If you look at any photos of the ship they have walkways with rails on top of the mast units, but this is not in the kit. This has been made and will be fitted when they have been painted.
-
Hi Msea,
Love this project. I always admire your attention to detail in a build.
Look forward to seeing this completed.
Bigkev

Thanks Kev just trying to be 20%HS ( Haddock Standard.)
At the moment remaking the signal mast and other small bits to be the same as the photos on the internet.
-
Base made - now to decide who will be placed on the dock next to the reactor ?????????
Not that you will take any notice of me, but I think the reactor will spoil the whole effect. why not display it as a separate entity.
Haddock.

He wants to irradiate someone.

I think I agree with you Haddock so will not add the reactor to the jetty - but might make it into the middle of a figure that could be a super hero "Nuclear Powered Zak Man" like the Iron Man from the films - sounds a good idea to me , what do you think??????
-
You could be right, just to plant a seed, It does look suspiciously like a Minion.
Haddock.
-
It could be made into Zak, the Nuclear Minion.
Question is..............................Will he glow in the dark?
Bigkev

Bigkev
More important what will glow in the dark ???????
-
Remind me to tell you the story of when I did glow in the dark - next meeting perhaps.
-
I will have to wait untill the November meeting - can I wait, I am not sure I can, for such an intriguing story !!!!!!!
-
Small pulley block at the end of the main mast derrick drilled out for thread.
-
No wonder you need glasses..........................!
That must have been one heck of a fine drill you used.
Bigkev
-
It was only a 0.5mm drill - thats about 10 times larger than Haddock uses.
-
It was only a 0.5mm drill - thats about 10 times larger than Haddock uses.
Two times actually, and that's small enough for me. (0,25mm).
Haddock.
Funny how 0.25 is 50% smaller than 0.5 but 0.5 is 100% bigger than 0.25.
-
Nice work my friend. Drilling out holes can be "boring".
-
Derrick fitted and rigging added. Also the extra platform on top of the mast unit.
-
Nice!
-
Very neat and clean, more like a yacht, that gets me worried.
Haddock.
-
I know what you mean, not a rust particle in sight -- at the moment.
-
Go on then, what's wrong with yachts?
R

Nowt, it's just that they're usually very clean, MSea just doesn't do "very clean".
Haddock.
-
Fair point

Don't know what you mean Haddock - I have had a bath this year , or was it last year !!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Squeaky clean then!!
-
No, Haddock.....................
That's the sound of his wallet, 'Squeaky Clean', Mrs Msea, told me.....................
Bigkev
-
No, Haddock.....................

Bigkev
No Kevin thats flutter flutter of the moths wings in a large EMPTY SPACE - since she has made the wallet a place with NO MONEY -- and SMW is on the horizon, what shall I do???????
-
Hi Msea,
I'd like to say you could sell your body, but sadly kits that used to cost 2s 6p (12+ 1/2p) are not around now.
Can you sing?................................................
Bigkev
-
No Kevin -- NO singing BUT I CAN DO CARTTONS !!!!!!!!!!
-
No Kevin -- NO singing BUT I CAN DO CARTTONS !!!!!!!!!!
What you sell boxes?
Do you mean cartoons?
-

What you sell boxes?

Very well spotted Zak but just wait till you see the "Dementor" with all its boxes of Transilvanian earth - that will make the blood drain from your face.
Also your group in the December quiz starts with minus 10 points !!!!!!!!
-
Many thanks Martin, your entry fee to the December bash has just tripled, two can play at that game!
-
Well back home again and working on the small boats for the section that are cheering on the N.S.Savanna.
The last photo is just for Haddock in case he has forgotten what it is like.
-
Coat of paint on the boats.
Figures fastened to toothpicks and ready for painting.
-
Sometimes I wonder why we bother - just painted "Batman and Robin" to go in one of the support boats.
The 3rd photo shows it close up but the 4th one shows it as it most people will see it -- that is if they have good close up vision.
-
This may be sadder than usual.
-
Thank you Zak !!!!!!!!
-
......very sad. Nice one!
-
Thank you Zak !!!!!!!!
An absolute pleasure.
-
People fitted into the other 2 boats and the dashboard made for the batman boat.
The dashboard is now fitted and the more observant amongst you will notice the "carpet monster" has now got the steering wheel - and he can keep it - easier to make a new one.
-
...you are definitely mad.
-
Work on the anti-Savanna rubber boats.
-
Have to agree with Kiteman!!
-
Is it me or is it everybody else ??????????????????
-
Probably all of us, just to different degrees.
Haddock.
-
......but also ingenious!
-
A 4th anti-boat made - it will be a "greenpeace" boat when painted -- if I can paint that small.
The steering wheel is a pin glued into the block and then a section of brass tube glued to this pin.
Thank you Kiteman and Haddock - I agree with you that I am mad, but so are all of you - thats why we all enjoy this hobbie so much.
-
Hi Msea,
Yep, your mad..................
But a blooming brilliant modeller!
If you pluck a couple of eyebrow hairs out, then you should be able to make a fine enough brush to paint the boats................................
Also you'll look a little bit younger as well..............
Bigkev
-
The 4th anti-Savanna boat is now painted and has a crew member.
The anti boats will be painted in colours going from the light greenpeace colour, gradually darker till they end up very dark grey.
-
Crew for the three anti-Savannah boats painted, a little cleanning up to do and change to hair styles.
-
Will one or two get a 'blue-rinse' for us older modellers?
Bigkev
-
....or simply sand off the hair...ha,ha,ha.
-
Good idea - I shall make some look like the group "Right said Fred" or as we call them our fellow modellers.
-
Right said the modelbuilders!!
-
Start made on some of the signs to go onto the quay.
Also the quay has been made smaller since the nuclear reactor is now not going onto the finished model.
Next a coat of plaster and some colour.
-
I really am intrigued as how this will all come together.
-
So am I Kiteman !!!!!!
-
Some signs made for the pro and anti protesters on the quay.
If you look close. one of them is for Wizzel - it says "bomb the band" not "ban the bomb."
-
It is exactly this attention to detail and the thought that goes into your dioramas that makes them come to life. I really do enjoy watching you work (as it were)
-
Work on the mast to replace the plastic ones so they will not bend when the rigging is added.
Some of the mast detail ( lights , radar etc ) has been glued to the replacement brass mast.
-
USA flag made for the N/S Savannah.
-
You really are barking.....but I like it!
-
Woof woof woof.
-
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.............................I would have thought
-
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR is the word - I have not got the correct number of stars on the flag -- ho ho ho ho.
-
First poster and banner fitted with 2 people and ship just placed in position.
Now to fit the rest of the signs and people.
-
Signs for the anti side now in place.
-
Now we are getting a feel for this. nice!
-
First coat of acrylic paste on the base to make the waves. Now wait for it to dry !!!!
-
Sea with basic blue coat - then start with changing the colour from light and flat at the stern ( pro nuclear people ) towards darker and rough at the front ( anti nuclear people. )
Wait for it to dry and then a coat of gel.
-
Wowza.....I am really liking this one.....almost inspires me to build a ship (note to Haddock)
-
More Martin magic - alliteration to you too.
-
Well zeugma zak -- alliteration to you as well with knobs on.
