Well back in the modelling world after a week in London at RHS Wisley gardens and a few other bits and bobs. Took "she who must be obeyed" to York to see some friends from "down south" (yes Zak I do have friends) and found this box of samurai in Monksbar models in the reduced section. Could not see on the box how many figures so checked with the staff and they had to open the box - the number is on the inside flap so you had to open the box to find out - for a change it was not me being daft and not seeing things.
Now for the funny bit - the models are not just any old samurai but all faithfully depicted from a film I have seen recently - The 47 Ronin .
If you are sitting comfortably I will tell you the story - if not interested OR you are going to watch the film -- skip to the photos. In 1701 Lord Asano was ordered to commit suicide because he had attacked Kira in the Shogans palace, you could not even draw your sword let alone attack somebody in that place. Kira had told Asano "porky pies" to make him look stupid in front of the Shogan, orders are orders so Lord Asano committed suicide, this made his samurai into lowly RONIN ( fighting men with no Lord to serve). Kira thought the ronin would attack him for what he had done so surrounded himself with lots of guards and protection, but they waited and waited and waited and after a year attacked Kira and cut off his head, placing it on their late Lord Asanos grave, as a mark of respect. Not a happy ending - even thou the Shogan respected and admired the ronin for what they had done - he ordered them to also commit suicide, orders are orders, so they all did, but knew they had fulfilled their role as samurai and avenged their Lords death.
First 2 photos show the box art and the next 2 the first figure with eyes and a first coat of paint on the face. Next some shading on the face and block colour in the uniform. Will bring it next meeting so Howard can show me what I have done wrong with the face

Scale?
I think I may have some, somewhere?

EUREKA! I have found them, 1/35 I believe, here are mine, sorry for hi- jacking your post.

No problem - I have 4 and you have 12 - the story of my life --hohoho
-
Main blocks of colour added next the patterns.
-
Because its me - will I just place the samurai on a block of wood - not a chance, so a start made on some castle gates to fit into a wall - why do things easy when you can make more work and trouble for yourself ??????
-
Some more work done on the doors and a coat of stain now added, next job is to make some door furniture - handles/hinges/etc
-
Aaaah So, young Msea-san,
Glad to see you are trying something different, 1/35 figures indeed. Like the little story about 47 Ronin, seems our club is much the same, but who should be executed remains a divisive question.......?
Love the facial expression on the figure, it looks like he is full of wind, and about to explode, is that intentional, ha, ha.
Remember Msea-san, Ki-ban is the answer to good modelling, Ki-ban.............
Emperor Kevin-ko, the Mercilesser

Speechless, absolutely speechless.
Haddock.
Is that by my fluent Japanese ( from the internet ) or because of the bad modelling ??????????????

Try using the translator on Google!
-
OK if you put the words in seperately like I did, you get TOTEMO =VERY MUCH and DESUGA = BUT.
Now I have put in both words together you get TOTEMO DESUGA = IS IT SO
Its like when I was at school they said don't try and teach him a foreign language, why make him illiterate in 2 languages just try and make him illiterate in English.
-
Well here is mine.
Not sure I like the look of his eyes though?
-
Looking good -- I think the eyes look just like yours -- hohoho
Will get the Japanese lettering on the collar and will then send a photo.
-
Most of the work done - swords and spear to do next
-
Hidden talents.
-
Thank you Haddock -- but ships are still my number one.
Blocking in colour on the spearsman and arms added to the bowman
-
Mine were on display at the club night but you missed them - football is obviously too important.

Correct - but how about some photos of models on the table ?????
-
Forgot to take my camera, I am awaiting Joe to send me the photos.
Here are the Ronin, just for you.
-
Nice very very nice
-
Some more work done on the figures
-
Aaaah,
Now both Zak and Msea are now figure modellers, and very good they are too...………
Is there no end to their modelling skills...………..?
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Your right, there is no end - it will only get worse!
-
Its the downward spiral for me -- hohoho
-
A start made on the castle walls and gate.
-
Nice scenery.
-
Thanks Zak - some more work done on the front of the castle
-
more done on the front of the castle.
-
Hi MSea,
Looks nice but,
Didn't they have a B&Q nearby who could of sold them a spirit level and a set square?
I suppose it's 'off wiv me head' time.............
Like it a lot really!
Bigkev
-
Crenulations to you.
-
I never did like to put my head over the parapet...……

Look at the photo I found on the internet to help with the model -- must NOT have had a B&Q.
Like my ship models you know I like to go from photos, you tend to not repeat other peoples mistakes ( I can make enough of my own as you all know ) so YES its off with your head -- hohoho
-
But if Kevin looks closely he will see that you did have a set square handy - I'm not saying that you used it mind!
-
Wrong again Zak -- remember I was an engineer -- so that is a hammer with a wooden end --- hohoho
-
Well I now know what to do with mine.
-
Quick tidy up at the back --- a section of card stuck over the uneven back and a coat of black poster paint.
Now on to make some flags for the front of the castle - one will say "Brid and Wolds" and the other on the opposite side will say "Model Club" -- that is if my Japanese from the internet is correct.
-
Hi Msea,
Lets hope that nobody from Japan reads this post.
It might mean I have to moderate you Msea, if you make a mistake with the flag wording...…
Careful now Martin-San
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
I will be on best behaviour - honest - hohoho
-
Oooooh Gosh,
That mean's I'll have some work to do..............
I'll have my whip ready to punish you if the need arise's, ...........you (maybe) naughty boy!
Just love the different modelling genre...............
Despite the dangers...........
Cheers
Bigkev
-
At last some work done on the models.
If the internet is correct the top one should say "model club" and the bottom one say "Brid and Wolds"
If not I will be in trouble with Kevin - big trouble.
-
You just get back doing some work and Zak the slave driver says more speed more speed get them finished
-
Hi Msea,
Looks like the 'Slave Driver Gene' can be transmitted.
Me, last night, now Zak.
Hope its not contagious, would want your nearest and dearest to get it, would you?
Bigkev
-
A couple of flag poles made and 2 smaller flags with the names Joyce and Martin in Japanese - maybe - if the internet is correct !!!!
-
A start made on the roof tiles from shim brass.
-
Glutton for punishment!!
-
Glutton for punishment!!
After a couple of rows I AGREE WITH YOU.
But when you have started you have to finish - now off to have some tea then try to get the rest of the tiles on. Then a coat of paint and some top ridge tiles between the rows - that should be another couple of days work.
-
Last roof tiles fitted -- let them dry and press down some of the edges -- and than some paint
-
Flags in position and second shot shows first figure attached.
-
Very nice, I would probably have used paper for the tiles. If you wrap it round the right size tube, dampen it and let it dry it works a treat, or silver foil is ok too.
I guess yours is more resilient.
I like your approach.
-
Will try the wet paper next time. I was going to use half round plastic but croppers had NONE - so cut and bent shim brass, not as tidy as I expected ( but that was due to the rubbish modeler that made it not the materials ) it to be.
-
You can also buy sheets of plastic card tiles, but they may be the wrong scale.
-
Second figure added to base - now to try and get the swordmans hand and sword to fit the body, without it looking like he is at an unnatural angle.
-
Third figure added
-
Last figure now in place -- some more touching up to do and work on the frame to hold the base
-
Very nice.
-
Thank you Zak
-
Frame made and painted black -- model fitted into this.
Now what shall I go to next -- I think a ship --- or I will be in trouble with Haddock
-
Just watched the film again and got me thinking - have you finished the second box of 8 figures YET Zak ??????????????
-

No, I have not started them.
Would you like them?
