Steampunk
I have always had a liking for science fiction/ fantasy.
It seemed to me that Steampunk would fit right in with modelling WW1.
Victorian/ Edwardian era vehicles and machinery that was steam powered instead of petrol or diesel, but maybe not quite like that?
I find the definition of steam punk difficult to pin down.
“Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. Therefore, steampunk may be described as neo-Victorian.”
So in my Steampunk alternative world, the internal combustion engine has not been developed, all power is provided by external combustion. This is used to produce steam which is then used to power the machine or vehicle. The fuel could be anything that could heat water to turn it into steam, wood, coal, coke, petrol, diesel or gas, they may be other sources as well, nuclear for example.
I came across a company called Ironclad Miniatures (http://www.ironcladminiatures.co.uk/ ) that produces some vehicles for use in the war gaming world. These are 28mm miniatures, what I hear you say is 28mm? That will be the size of a normal figure (whatever that is?).
Assume a man to be 6ft than 28/6 = 4.66’, so around 1/72 and 1/76 for my purpose.
I have bought some vehicles from Ironclad miniatures and these will help me get into the steampunk frame of mind – hopefully!
The kits are mixed media, resin and white metal, they are well cast and have a minimum of flash and some cleaning up is required of course.
I intend to start with their Steam Rotocopter. This kit has 12 parts, two of resin and the rest of white metal, a plastic stand is supplied for display purposes.
There are no instructions.
-
This is a very easy built, the parts were cleaned up with a scalpel and file and the exhaust was drilled out.
Parts were assembled using superglue.
It is probable that this will be finished in grey and as it is part of Her Britannic Majesty's forces it will have a Union jack as well as an identification number.
I may add extra armament later, only time will tell.
-
Nice looking kit and an interesting new direction. I'm looking forward to seeing what colour it will end up being.
-
What a fascinating subject.
I'm just a little concerned that MSea could latch onto this and we'll end up with stuff made from old tooth-brushes and disposable razors, the mind boggles.
Haddock.

-
Undercoat applied, now I have to have some patience while I watch it dry.
Perhaps a bit of steampunk scratch building?

The only answer is "Don't know what you mean Haddock" and "YES you are Zak"
I am glad I am having some effect on you Zak.
-
Oh no, is the start of a move towards the dark side?
-
I decided to paint it grey, in this case Tamiya XF-12, J.N. Grey.
Why, because I had some and I quite like the colour.
So spray booth fan on and mask in place, it was sprayed.
I have to be careful with Tamiya paint, it does seem to affect me somewhat.
The camera never lies, but the colour is different, it must be the light that lies.
I have added some bombs underneath and a skid at the rear,
-
I like it a lot Zak - I am glad you have come over to the dark side.
Just to make you worry a little more, I also have a steampunk model to make - its a "steampunk Minion"
So are you turning into me or am I turning into you - thats something to think about - or is the word worry about.

Life will be what it will.................its probably too short anyway.

Very philosophic of you -- or as my spelling goes "very filosofic of you "

Doesn't that fortify the over forties?
-
Gosh, that means Msea will be doubly fortified................
Like the Steampunk thingy, its certainly different from anything mainstream.

A little more painting done.
I need to make some decals sorry transfers for my rotocopter.
I will use the trust scanner and white decal paper.
-
Great stuff. It looks very 'steampunky' too - nice and industrial!
-
You just have to have someone taking a bath in that thing, it would so look the part.
Bridlufc
-
In the process of making the transfers, the original Union jack was scanned and then pasted into a word document, the size was then adjusted to that required and then printed onto white decal paper.
So the photo shows the original and the home made ones, these have been given a coat of gloss varnish to seal everything in.
The second photo shows the transfers already applied.
-
The transfers have been applied, it just needs a coat of matt varnish now.
I have done some dry brushing around the raised parts.
-
This MUST go on our table at the show in September.
-
This MUST go on our table at the show in September.
You must have some devious plan for it?
-
Continuing the theme.
This is another resin/cast metal kit from Ironclad Miniatures, 28mm.
It is a light tank and is equipped with a machine gun.
It has 5 pieces, so you may sneer at the model making required, if I can sustain my interest I do intend to scratch build some models. It was as cheap postage wise to buy a number of kits as it was one, so I did.
I assembled this in next to zero time, applied a grey undercoat and then the IJN grey.
-
Nothing wrong with a small number of parts - them Dragon 1/144 ones I'm working on have about 7 but the finish is what makes them. This is a good theme you've got going here and the tank looks the part.
-
One thing's for sure, the rivet counters will now be totally confused.
Haddock.
Lovely stuff.
-
Some pin washing done, still to weather and dry brush.
-
This MUST go on our table at the show in September.
You must have some devious plan for it?
Sorry Zak - no devious plan - I just think it is great and also something different.
I think a table display looks much improved if it has a range of different topics, not just all ships or all tanks or all planes.
BUT PLEASE DON'T LET HADDOCK SEE THE BIT ABOUT "ALL SHIPS" OR I AM IN BIG BIG TROUBLE.
-
Please remove the smoke/steam!!!!!
-
Wicked little things these, well build and entertaining. I like them...a lot.
-
Please remove the smoke/steam!!!!!
Will do haddock, it was only a bit of fun.
-
I like the steam, it's fun!
Roger
-
In an attempt not to upset Haddock, no steam on this one.
This is another resin/white metal kit.
-
I would have thought a chemist of your calibre would have devised a method of representing steam by now!!
Joking aside, this is building into a fascinating little collection. There must be scope for some "interesting" foibles!
Haddock.
-
Yes, probably, I am about to attempt some scratch building.
This will be a sort of Land Dreadnought/Ironclad sort of vehicle, it is just around in my mind at the moment. It is those guns in circular turrets that do it.
I still have another of the smaller ones to finish first.
The picture is to keep Roger amused.
-
Thanks Zak, much appreciated.
Is there a back story to this Anglo-French army you are building? They certainly look cool with both the Union Jack and Tricolor on them.
Roger
-
The Tricolour was supposed to be like the tail flashes on an aircraft, I never thought of an Anglo-French Alliance.
-
Ah, that makes sense!
This theme looks so suitable for scratch building, I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
R
-
It will probably be a large tracked vehicle, one of Her Majesty's Land Ships (HMLS), with ironclad like features, it still whizzing around my head.
-
Well I made a start on the bodywork, this will be clad in plastic card later.
-
More thoughts into 3d.
The inner has been built from 4mm foam board.
-
As I said, I do like these thingys, and very well build they are too. Well done Zak. I am looking forward to what comes out of your head!!!
-
Hi Zak,
There is something very appealing about Steampunk. Is it because we are drawn to the fantasy side of the subject, not real, but just possible in the future.............
Can't wait to see this one develop.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
looking good but what scale is it - it looks larger than the others ???????????????
-
It is larger, same scale, but its a Dreadnought/ Iron Clad Land Ship ..................it may become HMLS Britannia or Albion, not sure yet?
I will try to pose it next to one of the others.
-
I am impressed - and at the moment am collecting old toothbrushes and other assorted junk - that will make Haddock happy ( I don't think )
-
The whole project was kick started by the tracks I had made earlier for a Bullock Creeping Grip Tractor that never got finished.
The whole body is mounted on the four tracks, I am not sure how yet, but time will solve that.
The second picture will give you an idea of how much bigger it is than the other ones.
I have ordered Queen Victoria and she is on her way. I think she will become Her Britannic Majesty, she should be a little steampunkish!
-
Well more progress, cutting up and sticking plastic card onto the model.
-
Adding the driving/ track supports.
-
Here is another of the resin/white metal kit from Ironclad miniatures.
-
I suppose that just built itself while you weren't looking!!!!!!
-
I suppose that just built itself while you weren't looking!!!!!!
Something like that, I built it while waiting for other bits to set/ dry.
They only have 5 or 6 bits, so assembly is a breeze, not much cleaning up was required as the casting were pretty good.
-
More sticking bits of plastic card together.
-
Looking good, will it have railings round it?
Haddock.
-
Looking good, will it have railings round it?
Haddock.
Yes it will, am I moving towards the dark side?
-

Haddock.

You've had your own little corner in the dark side for quite a while now.
Haddock.
-
Now that you are a fully paid up member of the dark side - shall we try and temp the rest of the group over ?????
-
Too many fiddly bits on the dark side for my liking, the carpet monster would have a field day
Bridlufc
-
More bits of plastic stuck together, some of it quite small, it is riveting.
-
Riveting continues ad infinitum, or that's what it feels like.
-
I take it that the rivets are bits of rod cut up and glued on. Would I be correct? .....and whats with the nipples then, where are they from?
-
The nipples are some headlamps that I cast when making a model T Ford, they will serve as machine gun positions, or may some other type of weapon, who knows with Steampunk?
Yes the rivets are rod cut up and stuck on, I have a rivet making machine but it is not great.
-
Superstructure, more bits of plastic card stuck together, the ladder is a Plastruct item.
It all comes apart for ease of working.
The last picture is of the captain of the Landship Britannia. He is 28mm scale, so is approximately 28mm high, it equates to 1/56 as far as I can tell.
-
More rivets added to the superstructure.
-
Here you can let your imagination run wild,.....looking good so far Zak!
-
Hi Zak,
Think you are sharing those mushrooms with Msea.
This is wild and Zany, but very intoxicating watching it develop.
Another scratchbuilt lesson to us all.
Bigkev
-
Scratch building railings from brass and thin wire - pure joy, no it went ok, I just now have to make sure I don't put my big fingers through them.
Bits of cardboard and drainpipe come in useful as well.
This is getting rather large.
-
More, more, more, undercoating and painting.
-
Speechless!!
Haddock.
-
Love it!
-
Fantastic!
-
Decals - transfers were made with white decal paper for the Union jacks and other decal paper for the name.
It is being weathered and generally dirtied up with washes and airbrushing dilute inks onto it.
The rivets were pin washed with dilute black colour. The smaller tanks gives you some idea of the size.
-
What class will you put this into at Telford - will it be Gold ????
-
What class will you put this into at Telford - will it be Gold ????
Weird I think.
I am not really a competition person, I build for my own entertainment, much like you I suspect.

Here is another company for Steve from Hull.
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1211
Modelling on hold due to redecoration of my modelling room.
I never realised how much stuff I had crammed in there, time to get rid of some stuff maybe?
-
Hey....now we have a chance to catch up!!!
-
Don't think so Kiteman.
Have you ever heard of '60 minute Makeover' on British T.V.
This might be one of them.
Bigkev
-
Don't let Mrs Haddock see this, it could put ideas in her head.
Haddock.
-
He`ll probably build a 1:1 Model room in 60 seconds flat, and paint it after all the furniture is in there!
-
Be careful what you say.
Some of the furniture is in there.
-
HMLS Disraeli or Gladstone.
This is a model from Westwind Productions Empire of the Dead series. http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/
Although sold as 28mm it appears smaller, you can see a review here http://www.wargamesillustrated.net/hmls-gladstone-and-hmls-disraeli/
It is a resin casting with white metal add ons such as the wheels and the trooper's heads.
It is a pity that it is a slightly smaller scale.
Painting it at the moment, the figures are part of the base casting.
-
I have also been working on some Queen Victorias - yes, more than one, one is the true Queen, the other is a clone, as you can see things did not just go as they should have and she has an ocular implant among other additions.
She (the clone) accompanies the queen and acts as her personal bodyguard.
Remember these are 28mm tall or thereabouts.
-
Painting completed on HMLS Disraeli/Gladstone - I may change the name, not sure yet.
Coat of matt varnish applied.
The last picture shows it as compared to the smallest of the earlier steam tanks.
-
ONLY 3 models finished and a redecorated model room while I have been away --you seem to be slowing down Zak ???!!!!!??????
-

Old age I guess, life is catching up with me.

At least its not overtaken you like it has with me....................................
Bigkev

There is no one on this planet that can build quicker than Zak!! I think he models in his sleep.
-
Is that a new medical condition??
Modellingnightus.............
Bigkev
-
Nice to have the chance to catch up on here and also see some of this stuff for real at the meeting. I'm not tempted to try steampunk yet...not quite...
-
While I recover from dropping my Vickers Vimy I am doing some work on building an airship.
So far I have downloaded a free card model airship and will use this as a basis to produce a steampunk airship.
I do feel that my steam punk is more industrial than fantasy.
Steam powered airships - well, perhaps a really efficient steam turbine was developed and this was used to provide power - who knows. Does the word efficient and steam go together?
Mine will be in 28mm(1/56) scale again to complement the Landship.
So this will be Her Majesty's Airship. (HMA).
I saw a WW1 steampunk airship at a model show some years ago and did not photograph it, I think it may have been in the competition at the Northern Model Show.
Like that one mine will have a double hull and will be a rigid airship rather than a gas bag.
-
Uh oh! I feel a bout of crazed fantasy coming from Zak again!!
-
He's growing those blooming Mushrooms again!!
He is the clubs own Monty Python...........................complete with funny walk!
Bigkev
-
I can see it now, a steam driven airship with a human foot hanging down beneath it ready to stamp! Very Pythonesque.
Bridlufc
-
Well I built two of the card airships, they are the R101, so the shape will be reminiscent of it.
I than added some bits and pieces.
At the moment I am researching steam engines to see what type to use and of course what type of boiler.
After that I may get around to adding the foot to stomp on rude modellers.
You may notice that the work space has reverted to its former chaos, so much for trying to be tidy.
-
compared to mine, that's tidy.
-
Situation normal me thinks.
-
More progress.
-
It allready looks crazy!
-
It allready looks crazy!
I think it is sensible and looks great -- but that says something about me I think.
looking forward to seeing this one progress.
-
Nice work there, Zak.
Like Msea, looking at this one closely.
Bigkev
-
A couple of phrases come to mind to describe this build:
It grew like Topsy
and one my Gran used to say (I don't know why)
Bit by bit, part by part Fanny built her trolley cart.
A lot of research on gondolas and how they were suspended, their shape and how the airship would be powered, believe it or not.
In the end I just went with what I could find and what looked right.
It is mostly bits of plastic card, tubes and so on.
I did buy the ship's wheel from Mr Cropper.
The engine is a reciprocating twin cylinder high pressure jobby. the steam was condensed and recycled to keep weight down. the boiler is of the vertical type and is multi-fuelled, mainly coal.
The Gondola is coming along and it is not fully attached to the rigid airship above.
-

We will make an engineer of you yet ???????
-
Some hope, physicist/chemist but not engineering.
-
More sticking bits of plastic together, and raiding the spares box.
Some things will have to be altered to fit in a ladder and I would like to add a walkway on the top, later perhaps.
-

You could add a mast and sails if you wanted, or is this going too far?
-
A step too far, although in the fantasy word it seems that many airships are just that, ships in the air - a sailing ship hull suspended from the balloon. My imagination cannot cope with that.
I did make some ladders, I was going to take the easy route out and buy some, but Mr Cropper did not have any in stock.
My method involves taping a piece of plastic strip of the required thickness to my cutting mat.
The steps were then cut - I use a guillotine to try to ensure they all end up the same size.
The rungs were then glued to the strip, this was allowed to dry and the other side added. It was all stuck using Tamiya thin.
The ladder was then added to the model.
-
Looking fantasytastic is that.
-
Whats the cutting tool with the red handle?
Bridlufc
-
Whats the cutting tool with the red handle?
Bridlufc
That would be a guillotine.
I have two, a smaller one as well.
Here are a couple of better views of them.
-
More progress, adding bits that may have a purpose, water tank, water condenser/ purification, fuel bags- specially developed coal, low density with a high calorific value - it does not weigh much and burns well.
The top platform will lead to the top of the airship.
-
fuel bags- specially developed coal, low density with a high calorific value - it does not weigh much and burns well.
I am sure you are turning into an engineer.
-
Hi Msea,
Zak is like Dr Who, he regenerates himself as the need arises, could he be morphing into an engineer at last?
Whatever he is, this is brilliant, imaginative modelling at its best!
Bigkev
-
You surprised me Zak, the airship is not what I expected, intriguing none the less. I reckoned one of those guillotine thingies could be a handy tool so I bought one!!
Bridlufc
-

Excellent for when you need a lot of things the same length.
-
It´s looking tres bons!
-
More painting and home made transfers applied.
The two parts are not yet glued together.
Once fixed together I need to add the chimney (exhaust) and a ladder to get onto the top machine gun position.
The Airship is now HMAS Prince Albert. (Her Majesties Air Ship), built by the Sopwith Aviation Company.
-
Marvelous is that, well done Zak. Another fantasy masterpiece nearly done.
-
Magnificent!!
-
Very nice work, can't wait to see whats next!
-
All of the above and more.......................
Nice Work Zak.
Like Roger says, what's next......?
Bigkev
-
Will this be at the next meeting - i look forward to seeing it in the flesh.
Like the rest I am waiting to see what comes next.

I expect that will be another 26 models finished.
-
Well, not quite 26, but I have been working on some other Ironclad Miniature steam tanks, so be prepared.
Again, these are resin and white metal kits.
This first one is obviously based on the WW1 German tank.
-
Here is another one. More of an armoured car really.
-
I expect to see you without a sun tan at the next meeting Zak, you cannot produce models like this without being exposed to natural sunlight.
Are you Vlad the Impaler of Bempton???
Bigkev
-
Mr Grumpy of Bempton.
-
Mr Grumpy of Bempton.
You engineer - worst insult I could think of that would not be moderated!

Mr Grumpy of Bempton.

I thought that was a very good compliment !!!!!!!
-
Another one, they are arriving thick and fast.

Who remembers Billy Whizz.....from the Beano I think. Well Zak is the Billy Whizz of our club I reckon.....phew!!!!!

I think you are on the correct lines Kiteman - have you seen the speed he takes money from us. Whizzz whizzzz whizzzzz and all my money has gone.
-
Taking absolutely no notice of anything you say.....................w.....h.....i.....z.....z........here is another one or two for you.
-
Wowza!
-
I'll expect to see the whole collection at "our show"!
-
I'll expect to see the whole collection at "our show"!
They will be at the Northern show next week.
-
Here is the start of airship number2, no name as yet.
The dirigible bit is from a free card download, the gondola is a thick card tube cut in half lengthways and the bow will be formed from balsa. This may be an airship with some helicopter characteristics, but who knows at this stage.
-
Well using propellers from the scrap box and plastic tubes of various sizes, the gondola and engine take shape.
-
There is nothing like a damp, misty horrible East Coast day to encourage model making, so that's what I have done, here are the results.
Wheels are from the spares box.
-
There is no limit to your imagination is there?
Salvador Dali could have learned summat from you!
-
The two parts together, it just does not look right at the moment, will have to do some serious thinking and see what I can do.
This must have been developed by the RAF experimental works, it has a hydrogen generator as well as a new novel steam engine. (RAF = Royal Airship Factory)
-
Hi Zak,
I presume the R.A.F. have developed a higher than normal lifting hydrogen by the time of this model, or perhaps it expands under pressure.
A cool looking project, now where is my Bowler Hat and my Metal framed Goggles?
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Yes, you have it exactly right, welcome to the steampunk (industrial) genre.
A new type of lighter than light hydrogen has been discovered, or maybe they have gone into Cavorite (HG Wells, anti-gravity stuff if memory serves)
-
It is definately coming on is this one.....I prefer a top hat and walking stick myself!
-
Some progress, the jury is still out.
-
Hi Zak,
Is that your former hairnet being put to a new use in the picture?
Admit it, you don't need it now.
Cheers,
Kevin
-
If it's of any help to the jury, probably some sort of wires would be more appealing.
Haddock.
-
If it's of any help to the jury, probably some sort of wires would be more appealing.
Haddock.
Thanks Tony, I think you may be right, I will try to come up with something else.
-
Perhaps the net over the top then wires connecting it to the gondola thingy?
Haddock.
-
I agree....and some rigging too!
-
I am having a rethink, I am unhappy with the shape and style and may have to come up with a better shape for the balloon for want of a better word, keep watching.
-
Well, a complete rethink and now I have replaced the dirigible bit with another design, this will be attached to the gondola with cables.
-
More
-
Aaaaahh, that looks just about right now.
Think the re-think was a good way to go with this one. It now seems more plausible and believable in its current form.
Question is, what are you doing with your hairnet now.............?
Seriously though, good modelling skills win again.
Bigkev
-
I want to know what medication you are one......some imagination is that!
