Just sorting out the next model for Playday/DooDahDay/Serious Modelling Day (take your pick hohoho )
Decided to get this out of the stash, got it at Telford a few years ago, now to decide how to make it.
To keep Haddock happy it should be in water so it could be waterlined and placed in 1937 England for the coronation of King George 6th, or it could be 1939 shelling Finland during the Winter War, or it could be 1940 alongside a jetty with flags and posters for the 70th anniversary of Lenin's birth, or it could be 1941 near Leningrad with some areas flooded to tilt her over and increase the range of her main guns to shell the attacking German troops, or it could be 1942 with her bow blown off and the ship raised to use the center and aft sections to be used in the defense of Leningrad, so lots to choose from. All would keep |Haddock happy but knowing I will get a clip round the ear, she will be made full hull and museum style on a plinth - so why. First have made her sister ship the Sevastopol in 1917 alongside a jetty, so been there done that. Looking at the shape of the hull after modernization in 1928/32 loved the hammer and sickle bow and funnel so this was a decider, also the chains running from the ford deck down to the plate under the bow, never seen this on another ship. Now must get some more 2 section etch brass rails and brass bar for replacements and some form of head protection for when Haddock sees me - hohoho
-
That should keep you busy.
-
Trembling with excitement.!!
Haddock.

Haddock.
Is that with the thought of seeing the unmade model on Playday or the thought of clipping me round the ear - yohoho

Could be both.
-
Sorted out the base - I like these Zvezda ones that look like sea.
Now will it be done blue as sea - not a chance - will try and make it look like old rusty and worn bronze - if it is not good, can just overpaint it blue.
-
Base coat and then 2 coats of chipping medium, then top coat of 70859 black red, the some of this removed with warm water.
-
It looks like a Christmas Yule Log!!
-
It looks like a Christmas Yule Log!!
Polite!
-
Do you mean its something you find in the toilet at Christmas - Chris ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Some more rust tones added to the base and then coat of mat varnish..
Next some areas covered in chipping medium and others in crackle medium and then a coat of verdigris over the top, when dry will remove some of the top coat.
-
Did you have a bad night on the rum?
-
Yes lots of rum and think it looks like the inside of my head - yohohoho
Some of the top coat removed, will now walk away and come back to it later, so I don't overdo the removal all in one go. Will also pick out the ships name and surround with mat black.
-
Very nice Martin.
-
Playday 10 work -- hull and bow sections fastened together and cleaned up, some work done on the main decks and bridge sections as well as new brass parts made for the mast. Think also a LOT of talking and putting the world to rights as well as some model making
-
Two very thin coats of dark sand hand brushed onto the wooden deck - will let it dry and see if it needs another coat and then its on to picking out the individual planks in different colours. then a wash of dark sand and Flory wash to show the edges between the planks - the joy of ship building.
-
Yes, you have your work cut out for yourself Martin.
-
Yes Chris but just think about the happy smiling face on Haddock when he sees it :P :P :P :P
-
First planks picked out with buff - only another 7 different colours to go - think its cofffffeeeeeee time :o :o :o :o :o :o
-
Five more colours added to the planking - think I will add another different five next time I paint the decks, making a total of lots and lots - yohoho
-
Planks picked out with 10 different colours and then a thin wash of the base colour over the top to tone them down..
Now painting the parts that are grey and when that is done will give it all a Flory wash that should tone it down some more, as well as picking out the gaps between the planks - that's the theory we shall see how it turns out - yohohoho
-
Very colourful.
-
I think he got the inspiration from one of his shirts?
-
You could be right there Chris.
-
Not bright enough for one of my shirts yohoho ::) ::) ::)
-
Really!!! 😎😎😎
-
Props and rudders added to the hull
-
Not waterlined then?
-
NO Zak full hull to show the bow and the chains at the front of the ship.
The sixteen 120mm casement guns now have brass barrels replacing the bits of plastic.
-
All twelve sections of brass tube cut for the main gun barrels - to be cleaned up and then glued together.
-
Cast in ladder on the front of the turret removed from the right hand in the photo and will be replaced by a brass ladder.
-
It will be interesting to compare, brass versus plastic.
-
Lower hull painted black.
I think brass is so much better than the plastic - but it drives you mad doing it
I don't know how Haddock makes such an excellent job of it and still remains sane
-
Casement guns fitted and a trial run with the decks in place.
-
Looking good Martin.
-
Can't wait to see the turret with brass instead of plastic - I know, don't be impatient.
-
If you can wait I will do one turret with brass and one with plastic to show you the difference - then redo the plastic one - will that make you happy ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Masked up to the demarcation line and a coat of thinned black paint added.
-
Coming along nicely, brasswork looking good.

That would be great.

I'd be interested to hear your definition of "sane".
Haddock.
-
Looks good Martin.
-
All parts on the deck picked out in grey and the 2 sections of deck glued in place.
-
Some work started on the funnels and bridge areas.
-
The 2 aft twin 76.2mm AA guns sorted out - the barrels have been replaced with brass tube.
-
I want to see the ladders on the bigger turret!
Come on!
-
You will just have to wait Zak - hohohhoho
Some more work done on the funnel and bridge
-
First 2 sections of the white "boot stripe" now fitted to the hull, only 9 to go.
-
Port side boot stripe and depth information all added to the ship. When dry and solid will give a coat of pledge and then do the other side.
-
More work on the bridge and ford funnel
-
The plastic bars removed and replaced with brass rod to give some more strength when rigging is added.
-
Thought I would have to plat some copper wire to replace the chain that gives strength to the bow, but found some 32 links per inch that "she who must be obeyed" gave me a while ago and it fits the small holes in the bow plate.
-
Interesting arrangement, did it work?
-
Not sure Zak, most of this class had problems with the bow and wet ford deck under rough weather..
Not found anything in my books about the chains and if they improved the ship. Most talk about the funnel and smoke on the bridge and how the AA armament was improved. I just like this as its totally different to any other ship.

Thanks for that, certainly odd.
-
"Odd is good" in my book as you know - hohohohoho
-
All the chains and bits and bobs fitted to the bow - next job touch up the black chain ( don't you just hate photos that show up all the problems) then its back to working on the bridge.
-
Flory wash added to the deck and the bow section has had most removed, still some still to go.
-
All the bits are looking very nice Martin. The chains look the part.
-
Decks look good.
Haddock.
-
More work done on the bridge area
-
A little bit more work done
-
Zak-speed modelling!!
-
It?s all looking good.
Bob c
-
Zack-speed modelling!!
Zak says, watch your spelling!
-
Oops!
-
Oops!
The cheek as well!
-
Just for a change it was not me with the bad
sppeeling spaling speeeling speling incorrect word - hohohoho
-
Parts coming together, she is now looking like a ship not bits and bobs. Some work done on the ships boats.
-
Don't you just love ships boats, more fiddly than etched brass!!
Haddock.
-
Even worse when they have etch brass as well
-
Looks good Martin.
-
Coming along nicely
-
Brass replacements on the mast
-
Work started on the triple turrets
-
Etched ladders, etched ladders..................................
-
on the way, on the way - patience grasshopper >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
on the way, on the way - patience grasshopper >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
What's with this patience, not for me, sorry!
-
Tissue paper blast bags added to the turret barrels - still no etch ladders yet - hohohoho
-
Etch ladders fitted to keep Zak happy/quiet.
-
Working on the paravanes that are fastened to the sides of the two center turrets.
The model instructions say paint them scarlet and this is shown on several models that have been made and displayed on the internet, the Kangero book about the ship show them as grey - so I have decided to do them subdued red (Vallejo hull red) as think this looks the best - rivet counters do your worst - hohohohoho. Waiting for them to dry before fitting so am painting the blast bags at the moment.
-
First turret finished and fitted - and yes before somebody asks they do rotate.
-
Looking good Martin.
-
The ladder is an improvement on the plastic one.
-
Thanks to you all - yes brass is much better than the plastic bits -- but it "does your head in" at imes, don't know how Haddocit.
The plastic boat cranes improved with a bit of thread and a brass hook
-
Some work on the rigging on the aft mast
-
Looking good Msea.

-
This should make Haddock laugh - found these old "White Ensign" ariel spreaders and am going to try and give them a go -- listen for the naughty nautical language hohohoho
-
The holes in the end of the spreader bars are not etched right through and when I have drilled them they have split - SO have drilled a hole in the center of 2 spreaders and glued them to a thread, when dry, and I have had lots more coffee, will try and glue the outer threads onto them.
-
Fiddly stuff, good luck with it.
-
Driving me up the wall
-
Next try - have found my small drills and drilled out the holes on the end of the spreader arms - its 0.2mm before you ask..
As you can see on the second one its very very easy to break off the ends when drilling, good job I have a few spares. Next job when I have 2 quality ones is to thread he wire through and fix in place -- think its a 50 50 chance of me getting a good job done.
-
You're doing this because you love it!
-
No Chris because its FUN >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
FUN ???????
-
FUN now change that word to ******** have just finished threading 8 wires through the holes in one spreader - NEED coffee
My plans show 6 spreader ariel, that's 12 ends to thread , that's 48 wires, that's 72 holes to thread them through - that's a LOT of coffee and naughty nautical language. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
-
Will you be Holier than you used to be?
-
Only on a Sunday - yohoho
-
Both spreaders are now fitted and sorting out the wires.
Think for the next ones will hold the spreaders in locking tweezers and fasten these down onto the bench, then fit each wire through both spreaders at the same time - see how this goes.
-
Not easy by the look of it.
-
NO >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Have you consdered using monofilament rather than wire?
Just a thought.
Haddock.
-
Don't think I would be able to thread the monofilament through the holes - will try the method I described and see how that goes, but thanks for the suggestion.
-
Patience Grasshopper. If the coffee doesn't work try Kraken, at least you'd have an excuse then!!
-
Martin, remember it is FUN!
-
The other 9 gun barrels made and now to be fitted to the turrets.
-
Brassed off now?
-
Totally brassed off - hohoho
-
Progress though.
-
Replacing the gun barrels on the 76.2mm guns on the top of the ford and aft main guns.
-
Well that was a happy hour fighting the carpet monster - did the gun jump off in the direction it seemed - no 180degrees the other way >:( >:( >:( :( :( :( :( :o :o :o
-
Single 76.2mm guns now going together well
-
Three 76.2mm guns and rails added to the ford and aft turret
-
Nice work Martin and so delicate too.
-
Ditto, you and Zak must have a phenominal spares/bits and bobs collection with all the things you scratchbuild.
-
No Chris - just a large junk box - that's what I call it others call it my finished models - hohohho
-
Ditto, you and Zak must have a phenominal spares/bits and bobs collection with all the things you scratchbuild.
Like Martin, my spares box is anything and everything.
-
All 4 turrets now fitted to the ship
-
Looking good Martin.
-
Thanks Chris - the rest of the ships boats added
-
Good detail.
-
Thanks Chris - more bits and bobs added, when dry and solid will paint the port and stbd lights
-
Looks like a beast of a ship!
-
Somewhat of a brutal beastie.
