Now I have plenty of time ahead of me I have decided to start a new project. Accurate Miniatures 3.7” HAA gun. This will be a new experience for me, all those little bits of Resin!
-
Hi Meremodeller,
Nice to have you back on here, look forward to seeing this project come along.
However, your image of the kit cannot be seen on the site in its current format.
Can you add it as a photo/picture?
Allowed file types are doc, gif, jpg, pdf, png, text, zip
It also might need resizing as not to exceed 2048KB, and a max of 10 pictures not exceeding 2048KB in total.
Thanks,
Bigkev
-
Sorry about the image, I have reposted it to the correct size etc.
-
That looks a nice kit! I have a smashing book on German Flak - very detailed with some wonderful modelling idea but there seems to be very little about British air defence that I can find - at least not in one authoritative publication, which got me thinking more about exactly what we had and how it was used. Pity it's 1/35 as it limits the use in dioramas with aircraft somewhat.
-
Just a thought ---- have you decided on this project to be able to shoot down Neil's aircraft ????????
-
Hi Bill, nice to see you posting, take care with resin though.

Hi Msea,
Neil's models would be ideal target practice!!
And at 1/35th, the ammunition would be bigger!
Cheers,
Bigkev

Completed the 1st step of the Barrel and Cradle. Fit not as good as I had hoped and the instructions are not helped by the wrong numbering of some parts. Please don't expect an update at every stage but I will post when the Barrel and Cradle is complete.
By the way, any ideas on the colour for HAA guns at this stage of the war?
-
Probably bronze green, but Tony W would be the man to ask.
-
So, not the green seen in the TV programme about the NYMR?!
-
Was that green or brown?
-
Hi Bill,
It's starting to take shape, eh?
Not as easy a kit as the P-51H!?!
I have just restarted work on the Special Hobby Fiat BR.20... which has similar wrongly numbered parts and has horrendous fit problems. It's presently clamped all over on my workbench until the glue dries!
I must find my camera so I can post photos too.

Hi Biggles,
See how easy it is to post.
Now lets see a new topic Special Hobby Fiat BR.20 on 'Modelling Projects' by Biggles.
Meremodeller, look forward to seeing this build come along.
How somebody with intellect, sorts out the mis-numbering, and ends up with a great finished article.
Cheers,
Bigkev

That is a really nice looking kit with plenty of detail. Will it be a standalone item or will it go on some sort of diorama?

It would look good in a diorama with some figures - but not your usual foibles!
-
Hi Meremodeller,
Looking good so far, and not a foible in sight....yet!
Bigkev
-
The plan is to have it in a small diorama along with a searchlight and rangefinder, maybe a soundlocater although I think that was a rouse in the 1940 publicity to hide that fact we had radar. Hopefully with crew. I will just about get this done and the. The likes of Tamiya will announce an IM kit for 1/3rd the price and with crew etc! ‘That’s Modelling’

Hi Meremodeller,
Not seen anything like the diorama, you plan to build.
Go for it, it will be a first.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Has promised an update on the 3.7 HAA gun.
Now completed the Barrel & Cradle stage. Next the Turntable Mounting but at no point does it explain when and how the Barrel and Cradle are fitted, A lot of guess work required here.
-
Nice detail.
Haddock.
-
Well done Bill, the resin kits are always a challenge.
The exploded views supplied by AA are all well and good but sometimes you cannot see where a part goes.
If you get stuck, try emailing them, I found them very helpful one the whole.
-
Does anyone produce 1/35 scale figures that would be suitable?
Biggles
-
Yes, lots of people, Tamiya and lots of resin stuff.
-
Will they be fully clothed ?????

Not if Bill has his way,

First a correction,
It is the Accurate Armour kit, not Accurate Miniatures,
Secondly a 3.7 HAA appeared in 'Carry On England'! I have attached the Lobby Card that shows a still from the film.

Any excuse to watch Barbara Windsor - is she even in it?
Just checked, she is not in it.
It was filmed in 1976, so how accurate will it be?
-
At least you've got a good idea of the crew positions, and maybe a suggestion of the colour scheme... which looks a bit like Bronze Green? The 'recoil' part of the barrel looks quite worn?
The gun itself was probably on loan from a museum so MIGHT be in an "authentic" colour scheme?

Good progress with the 3.7"HAA gun over the last couple of days. The fit and alignment of the various parts is difficult as are the correct positioning of some of the smaller detail. Add to that the fragility of the small pieces makes for the challenge.
-
Coming along nicely though - you aircraft and foible modellers need a challenge now and again.

Nice Work Bill,
Look forward to seeing the finished item.
Foible's would be welcomed as light relief, but not mandatory!

Just a note on the soud locator stuff. It was actually tried some time arou d the first world war. There is in actual fact a concrete parabolic sound mirror near Spurn Point. I have a photo somewhere. (I apologise if you are already aware of this.)

Looking good Bill, the position of some parts is guess work but they generally turn out very nice.
-
Some time ago someone wrote they thought it was looking pretty finished, well this is where I am at now. All these pieces have to be fitted and the instructions don't make it clear quite where they all go!
At least the wheels are easy to identify!

The toe bone is connected to the ……… and so on......

Looks like there's still some way to go.

Hi Bill,
I envy your patience (and skill)...
... I would have consigned it to the Shelf of Shame by now!!!
Biggles
-
Thank you for your kind words!
Once the 'gun' is finished I can start thinking about the 90cm Searchlight. This will have to be scratch-build as will the range/height finder.
Zak tells me there should also be a generator and truck to mount it on! It's never ending!
Then I shall have to find the crew.
-
Then you will have to make it work, install a carbon arc.
-
Today the 3.7" HAA Gun is complete.
All that remains now it to make the Searchlight, NOT forgetting to install a Carbon Arc light, Range/Height predictor and generator on the Truck and then setting them in a diorama!
In the meantime I'm going back to models from the BoB film.
-
That is a cracking model.
Andy.
-
Very impressive.
Haddock.
-
A very nice looking model, well done Bill.
-
Hi Bill,
Terrific stuff.
A great looking model, you should be very proud of your model it is a testament to your modelling skills.
And not a wing in sight.....

He certainly didn't wing it.

Absolutely not....!
Very impressive work indeed.

Thank you for all your kind words.
I have been surprised at how little in the way of reference material I have been able to find on the 3.7” considering how widely used it was during and after the war.
Anyway I’m pleased it’s turned out so well.
-
Today the 3.7" HAA Gun is complete.
Blimey Bill, 4 days from a load of mystery bits to the finished and very impressive article. Excellent work!

Hi Wizzel,
19th March until today is not four days!!
However, if Withernsea is in a different time continuum, then I suppose 4 days might be right, but in my world it is about a month??
Bigkev
-
Four days or four weeks just think how many models Dave would have finished.

The blooming country would be slowly tipping over to the East Coast, and Bempton would be under water..
Bigkev.
PS. But if he had a barrage balloon or two, then they might balance things up?
-
Hi Bill,
The gun looks great... as the others have mentioned, a testament to your modelling skills.
Let's just hope you get the chance/opportunity to display it in all its glory on the Battle of Britain 80th Anniversary Display at Scale ModelWorld (Telford) in November...
(... along with all Dave's vehicles and buildings!)
Then there's the 90cm Searchlight, range/height finder, generator, and truck to mount it on, and the crew...
... it's a never ending project Bill!
Power to your elbow,
Biggles

No, it was a reply to Bill's post on 15th April where he put a picture of the almost completed work and the remaining bits he still had to locate. I may be on a different planet to the rest of you but the time zones are the same :-)

Hi Wizzel,
Ah, sorry matey.
Did not mean to offend, just thought you had missed some dates out of the build.
Probably we all need to have a planetary meet soon....
Time zone in Driffield now is...…. Bedtime!
Cheers,
Bigkev

Apologies are not necessary Kev as I never choose to be offended. I could quite easily have felt like 4 days from the start of the build though the speed the days seem to be going by at the minute. They have my express permission to drag as long as they wish until next Monday though as I am now on holiday for a while.
