Title: AMERICAN DESTROYER USS FLETCHER IN 1:350 BY TAMIYA.
Post by: Haddock on January 14, 2021, 04:20:55 PM
Got this from Zak a few years ago, don't remember what I paid for it but it was very cheap, always a good start.
Seen as it was a bargain I thought some etched brass wouldn't come amiss, the White Ensign fret set me back £25. It's languished in the "to do" pile ever since.
The set now retails just south of £50.
The set covers two ships in the class and as you can see is pretty extensive, not so bad if you want to build two ships.
The pictures probably speak for themselves, about three modelling days work.
Typical Tamiya kit, well engineered and all very sensible. The camo scheme could be fun.

Lots of brass to keep you busy for a day or two.

How do you seperate the brass from the fret? I use a tile and sharpe blade but still end up with a burr!!!

Hi Chris,
I use an Acrylic piece of plastic and rounded blade. I too get a little 'burr' sometimes.
But I find if I hold the piece in some flat smooth pliers, right to the edge. I can remove it with a sanding stick quite easily.
Cheers,
Bigkev.

PS. Best person to ask is Oh, Honourable Haddock.

Tamiya make a half round diamond file,it works
a lot better than a sanding stick but lasts forever.
Not cheap but if you do a lot of brass, well worth it.
Practice makes perfect.

Etched parts always have a cusp [a ridge along the edges] as a product of the way they are etched. It's worthwhile to run a fine file along these edges to square them of, improving edge bonding and the look of any visible edges

Port side done. I don't know whether it's poor lighting or my camera
but it would be nice to see a bit more contrast between the colours.
These are "authentic" colours so I'll have to live with it.

Nice wavy (navy) camoflague. Re the brass, thanks for the tips everyone. I have some diamond files so will give them a try.

Beware of the files with a red plastic handle and cheap, they're a bit on the coarse side
therefore tend to grab the brass and bend it if you're not careful.

I have some swiss files I use which seem to be ok if you are careful.

The more observant will notice the colour change. I couldn't really see the pattern in natural light at
normal viewing distance so I've taken a deep breath and sanded back to bare plastic, primed and added
the first colour.
Now I need to make another set of masks and repaint with modified  colours to get more contrast.
I probably need my bumps felt.

That's it, reworked with updated colours.
Must admit, I'm pleased with the result.

Hi Haddock,
Sometimes 'your own interpretation' is better than any book/reference.
If it looks and feels right...do it!
