Well, I'm not building much at the moment. Busy at work and all that.
I hope to start this Lancaster nearer Christmas when work dies down. I bought it from John H (he had 2). I had been playing with the idea of getting one for some time.
I also sent off for some after market bits from Hannants (gun barrels, instrument panels, and engine rocker covers. Lots of money but lots of fun.
Now, do I go the whole hog and get the running engines and sound???
Will keep you all posted..
Andy.
-
WOW!
-
Can’t say much more than Dave, WOW.
Bob c
-
Save the wow's for when its finished.... in about a year. ;)
Andy.
-
Surely January 1st.?
-
That looks a great project Andy,
I'm sure you will do it proud,
Bigkev
-
Looking forward to the progress of this one.
-
Looking forward to seeing this built Andy. I checked my SAMI references and can't find an entry for this kit otherwise I'd have sent you the Review/Build to help you :(
-
Thanks all,
I have the modeling datafile on the Lancaster and there is lots of stuff on the internet.
I have just ordered the sound, lights and working props set for it. Biggest investment in a kit I have ever made. Scary!!
Andy.
-
Probably cost more than your car.
-
You 'Little Devil You!'
No pressure on this build then.
I am sure you will keep us entertained and informed with this build.
Right, go off and have a sit down and a big Whiskey to calm the nerves.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Ohhh go on then...
Andy.

Make Lancaster noises while you drink the whisky - hohohhoho
-
If he gargles when drinking whiskey, he might replicate an engine with a hangover...!
Bigkev
-
More WOWs!
-
The electronics kit arrived last week.
What have I done...... :o
Andy.
-
I am really really really looking forward to seeing this one in action
-
I hope to have it ready for next years club model show.... it will be a long build.
Andy.
-
Wow you have to be an electrician as well, you’ll table centre.
Bob c
-
OMG you've got some serious work on there Andy, best of luck. Good job you guys are in Tier 3 so it will give you plenty of time to crack on. No doubt it will turn out a stunner.
-
Again "WoW"
Will you get the base with the computer chip for starting up and stopping. I watched one with John at Telfors, I think he got one. Looked great.

Yes, if you look at the picture of the parts, there is a circuit board that controls the motors lights and sound. The hardest part is going to be getting the propellers to run true. There are 4 3D printed bushes to attach the motors to the prop bosses but they're not 100% true. I may look for a brass replacement for them.
Now, I wish I was a model engineer... ::)
-
Somebody's got their work cut out. That'll certainly keep you busy Andy.
Ready for tbe next club meeting - whenever that will be.
-
It's going to be fantastic!
-
I remember commenting to John that may of the motors did not seem to run truw and the props wobbled, good luck.

I agree. We don't like wobbling props.
-
If you wobble Andy, WHAT WILL HADDOCK SAY - hohohoho
-
Andy, as well as various YouTube videos the forum.largescalemodeller.com website has a build of this Lancaster which may help you.
-
Andy,
There will be no wobbles in this build in your hands.
I am confident that it will turn out to be a masterpiece of modelling.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Thanks Chris I will have a look.
I may have to change my name to Mr Wobbly. ;D
Bay the way the Spitfire is 1/48th...
-
The Lancaster is going to be enormous.
-
Looks like you've taken a page out of Howrd's book, lol!!!!
-
Bit of turret action. The paint tin is for scale. 8)
The fuselage and wings will contain the wiring and I need to make myself a build plan for this. That's why I'm building the 'peripheral' parts first.
Don't know if that makes sense but I always need a plan even if its a bad one...
-
Now for some Tail action.... That doesn't sound right. :o
Anyway, there is a problem with the horizontal tail planes. If you build them as per instruction, you end up with a top with a top and a bottom with a bottom. So I simply cut off the locator pins and to two large pins on the stub and carefully stuck them together. Nothing too hard and it doesn't seem to effect the dihedral.
Thanks go to 'Nigel's modeling bench' youtube channel for the heads up on the tail fault.
-
And some more.
I do like a Big Bulbus Tire... :P
So far the fit of the parts is very good.

Got the Electronics working today. How hard can it be...
This just helps me work out a build sequence. I will swap them over to the kit as I build.
Exciting ;D
-
How hard can it be?
Great drawing.
-
Famous last words - hohoho
-
Here's the rear turret almost built. I intend to add some metal gun barrels later.
The seat belts need weathering and shaping.
Chees. 8)

Progress, tail end Andy!

Impressed.
-
Latest SLOW progress.
I'm waiting for the Eduard instrument set from Hannants, then I can crack on with the flight deck.
The gun turrets went together without a hitch with the fit of parts being very good. Care should be taken when installing the machine guns so that they line up correctly with the separate barrels.
The scope for super detailing this kit is huge. I'm just trying to keep things simple. Just like me... ;D
Thanks all.
-
Really excellent.
-
Quality work.
-
At that scale you can have some terrific detail.
-
And can spray the interior rather than use the hairy stick!! Looking forward to seeing it painted.
-

I thought I would try the roller. :o
-
Thank you Eduard...
-
Thank you Eduard...
I hope all the dials wil move when you start those Merlin engines - ha, ha.
-
Excellent detail.
-
It looks like the power setting on your number two engine is down a bit - hohohoho - the instrument panel is excellent Andy
-
Looking very good, I'm quite interested in the Nose Section which is going to be released as a separate kit. It won't get too out of hand size wise.
-
You're making a really good job on this Andy. I thought that E boat you brought to the meeting years ago at the Buffet in Brid station was big!!!
-
Really good Andy, really BIG!
-
Thank you all.
Progress has been made in between the glasses of wine, some weathering to be done.
This model drinks paint. :o
-
Looking good Andy plenty of detail.
Bob c
-
Nice work on the cockpit. Lots of detail.
-
Even the 1154 receiver and 1155 transmitter shown in detail. Excellent Andy. Were decals used for the radios?
-
Fantastic job Andy, keep it up.
-

Yes Chris, I used the Eduard detail set. They look a bit too clean but with a small amount of weathering they should look good through the glass.
Lots more to do but we'll get there.
Thanks all.
Happy New Year.
-
Looking GREAT Andy
-
The only problem is where to keep it?
Tell James his model railway may have to move over.
-
Is any of the interior able to be seen?
Excellent though.
-
Amazing stuff!
-
Zak- No I don't know what I'm going to do with it when its finished. I think I have my head planted in the sand on this one.
Chris- I don't think you will be able to see much through the windows with my skills that may bee a good thing. The kit comes with a full alternative CLEAR fuselage. I don't plan to use it but at this time 'all bets are off'.
Here's the latest progress, I think we are nearly done building the crew compartment. The next step is to start putting in the lights and electronics. Wish me luck... :o
-
Good luck.
My dad was a navigator on Lancaster bombers.
Don't forget to model the tin can to be passed around for going to the loo. No time to leave your post apparently.
-
With all the excellent work you have done on the interior Andy - if it was me I would use the clear half of the fusalage on one half so you could look in from one side and see the outside paint job on the other - BUT remember I am strange so you don't have to follow my ideas
-
Yes really excellent detail Andy.
-
It does seem a shame to hide all that great detail. When are the builders coming to make the extension to house it in?
-
Fantastic detail Andy, I think you will have to finish it and then take it apart to bring it to a club night, or will it have babies by them.
Bob c
-
That's magnificent. I wouldn't ever dare to try anything like that!
-
Here's the first of the LED's going in. Progress is even slower now (back at work).
Making the lights work is the easy part, constructing a model around them is the tricky bit.
The wings are designed to detach for transportation which complicates the wiring further.
Ahh well... he who dares Rodney!!!
-
Hi Andy,
Super work.
This will be the mother of all models....
Bigkev
-
... and a wiring nightmare me thinks.
-
He'll be ok as long as he doesn't need Plannning Permission!!!
-
That's impressive!
It's a good idea to design the wings to be detachable.
-
That's impressive!
It's a good idea to design the wings to be detachable.
It is a good job, that they are.
Andy is planning to partially 'fly' his latest creation on completion by adding them to the upper of the car.
I remember a certain trip to Huddersfield with a 'Concorde Casket' balanced on the laps of those in the back.
This is much bigger, so the wings need to be able to be removed.
Cheers,
Bigkev

I remember it well, I don't think Ron was too impressed. That model still exists in Col Tony's collection.

I've made some more progress on the lighting...Although you cant tell.
I have found that getting the fuselage halves to fit together whilst juggling with the wires will be no mean feat. Learning on the job.
The control board will live in the bomb bay so I can get to it for any future fault finding. Of course this means no bombs or detail but I don't want to bury every thing away so I cant get at it.
Thanks all.
-
Coming along great. The internal painting looks fantastic when you zoom in.
-
Looks like you need knitting needles Andy. Looking brilliant though.
-
Can't wait to see this in the flesh
-
Hi Andy,
That looks very nice and complicated.........
Good idea about using the bomb bay as a home for the control panels for the electrics.
Watching this one with interest.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
They need to know where they're going, right...
Just when I'm about ready to put the fuselage halves together, I find something else to do.
-
Your detail is magnificent Andy. Great job.
-
Thanks Chris, my work is always a bit rough around the edges but it should look ok through the canopy.
I have finally got the fuselage halves together, it put up a struggle and I had to "talk" to it but it was no match for "The Councilman".
It will need some filler. :o
Thanks all.
-
Did you have to use gentle persuasion - like a big hammer - hohoho
-
You certainly took on a big project there Andy.
-
I'll be coming back to this build for the internal detail when I get around to building my Dambusters Lancaster. Great job Andy.
-
Its touch and go but I think we can save him...
Some soldering and tidying up to do.
Thanks all.
-
Hi Andy,
Great stuff.
Did you Morph into an Octopus during the fuselage joining you must have needed four pairs of hands.
Awesome stuff matey.

Well the size of the thing has given me a few problems. The most tricky thing was getting all the bulk heads to sit in the right place, without trapping anything.
No offence to Hong Kong Modell's but this is no shake and bake even without the wiring.
All good fun.
-
Next job is to tidy up the wiring in the bomb bay. The wires have a tendency to wrap themselves around anything and everything.
The LED wires are only one strand thick so I've been careful not to bend them too much incase they break, I must have tested them a dozen times already.
I'm soldering the wires, with heat shrink sleeves to make sure they're insulated well.
Thanks all.
-
Looking good Andy. Have you tried using blobs of silicone to attach the wire to bulkheads etc.?
-
Looks good, and difficult! Way too technical for me.
-
I agree with red lancer far to complicated for me.
Bob c
-

Thanks for the tip Chris, I used a hot glue gun. In hind sight I should have installed the wiring before construction started then I could have cut channels into the plastic without other kit parts getting in the way.
I got there in the end.
Thanks all.
-
All this lot wont fit in the bomb bay so I need to do some re-wiring. >:(
Good job its all around 3 volts.... Fire Fire!!
-
It looks good and complicated Andy - don't loose your wiring plan hohoho
-

If I can do it anyone can.
Thanks all.
-
Keep up the good work Andy. You'll have it finished for the competition in December (I'm sure we'll be having meetings then).
-
Heart like a dustbin lid.!
-
Hi Andy this is looking really good I admire your courage and tenacity. Keep at it.
-
Kind words all.
More photos' to come.

Well, I got all the wiring in, in the end.
I'm at a point now where I'm happy with the electronics. The fuselage joints are filled to a reasonable standard, so I can take a short break from the kit. I fancy doing something a bit simpler before I tackle the wings and motorized props.
By the way, I think I have solved the wobbly prop problem. I will share it with you all in the next post.
Bye for now. ;D

Pleased to hear that you have solved the wobbly props, nothing looked worse on some of the excellent models out there.
-
I agree.
-
Glad your wobbly props are fixed - did you need surgery or did the doctor just give you tablets - hohohohoho
-
Looking very good Andy.
-
Back on this years BIG project.
Wing tips lights installed and wings awaiting engine nacelles.
Its good to be building the monster again. :)
-
No doubt you're refreshed and ready to push on?
-
Yes, onwards and upwards.
Here's another pic.
-
Last one today.
I bought this tool from the US in an effort to avoid the 'Wobbly Prop' situation.
Its maid of aluminum and looks to be really well engineered. One for Mr Haddock to look at.
More information to follow when I've had a chance to use it.
Thanks all.
-
Looks a useful tool especially as you'll be powering the thing.
-
I hope that works, sometimes I wonder if it is the bearings on some of the motors as well?
-
Progress made on the undercarriage, although the paint work needs tidying up a bit.
Looking forward to the engines and motors next. Make or break time. 8)
Cheers.
-
This will be some beast when finished.
-
We like a good beast 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Wow! Looking good.
-
Great paintwork Andy, keep it up.
-
Hi Andy,
Great detail on that undercarriage.
Looks sturdy enough to support that big 'Lanc'
Nice paintwork into the bargain.
Cheers,
bigkev
-
It's looking great to me Andy.
Bob c
-
Its on its own feet. ;D
Engines next.
Thanks all.
-
Looking great Andy - Next job, is like in the film Jaws "you need a bigger bench" - hohohohho
-
Excellent, nice tidy model room too, and a paint rack.
-
I got a bit of a shock when I put the wings on. Its going to be even bigger when I fit the wingtips and tail.
People keep asking me where I'm going to put it when its finished and I cant answer them... .. Exciting stuff though.
I know, I'm very sad. :o
Thanks all.
-
Starting to look very impressive.
Haddock.
-
Next you'll have it flying Andy. Very impressive.
-
Hi Andy,
Excellent work, on a sure footing with this one (pardon the pun!)
Never mind biking to work, get those four props turning and you could fly there in style.
Nice, very nice.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
This is my effort to try and avoid the 'wabbly prop syndrome'.
The picture shows the white 3D printed shaft you get to link the motor to the prop, however the shaft dose not run true.
What to do..
-
So here's the fix... I hope. ;D
I bought some brass watch bushes. Now, they don't quite fit the prop bosses but after adding some heat shrink wire insulation and trimming to length they fit quit nicely without any glue.
I then mounted the motors directly behind the props witch takes out some more of the 'wobble'.
The kit spinners don't spin totally true but I think I'm getting there. Time will tell.
The wings are almost built now. more pics tomorrow.
Thanks all.
-
Great steady work Andy.
-
Hopeyou manage to solve your problem,
Looking forward to seeing the props spin.
-
Keep at it, the MK1 eyeball is a very precise piece of kit.
Haddock.
-
I could do with your MK1 eyeballs for this one Mr Haddock.
Wings!! BIG WINGS...Here they are... I can just fit both in the spray booth. Its going to cost me a fortune in paint.
You can see the motor directly behind the prop. You get 4 Merlin's in the kit but I have just built one into my offering. This means I have 3 Merlin's going spare. ::)
For my own sanity I have chosen to concentrate my efforts on the functionality of this kit more than super detail. Good move... Bad move?? We will see.
Thanks all for now.
-
What a beast.
I'll just go and buy some shares in Dulux.
-
The wings certainly are big Andy. I'm sure you'll make a good job of the it whichever way you go.
-
This is going to be a 'monster' when it's finished. Keep at it Andy you're doing great.
-
Looking forward to seeing the wings and body fitted together - don't know about a bigger bench think you will need a bigger room - hohoho
-
Looks to be going well Andy
-
Disaster :(
I dropped the bloody thing while I was having a move around, it fell 6ft from a shelf.
BUT... We can rebuilt it.
-
On the mend. It was touch and go for a while. ;)
The electronics survived but the fuselage was split in three places. I had to put a metal staple in to stop it splitting again. The size and weight of the model has thrown up a few problems, but we're getting there.
More pics to come.
-
Infeel for you.
Haddock.
-
I can smell the finish line. 8)
-
Hi Andy,
That's a corker of a model.
Love the finish, especially as some of it is through a rattle can, rather than an airbrush.
Are you sure, you're not 'Banksy of Driffield'.....??
Cannot wait for you to cross that finish line.
Bigkev

Don't tell anyone... ..I painted it with a roller. ;)
-
Hi Andy,
A Rolls Royce finish.
Bigkev
-
It looks GREAT Andy - you would never think it had its first flight off a 6ft shelf.
-
Admirable on build many fronts Andy. Perseverance, skill and not least size. Really looking forward to seeing it on a suitably strengthened table.
-
Looks great, almost there.
Will there be sound effects as well as turning props?
-
Looks really good and nearly there.
Bob c
-
Is that the kit codes or did you make up AR-G after it fell? Fanatastic model and by the way how do you keep your workbench so clean and tidy?
-

Yes Zak, we have a speaker in each wing.. ..STEREO.
-

The codes are from the kit and I have no room for clutter.
Thanks for the comments all. 8)
-
Really excellent model. At least you got the remedial work done. It certainly is a monster!
-
Looks really Good
Looking forward to seeing it in reality, to fully appreciate the size
