Modelling Projects / Re: Kinetic Harrier
« on: April 25, 2021, 04:39:10 PM »
Finally complete. I have mixed feeling about this kit. Yes, it's a massive leap forward from any Harrier in 1/48.  The surface detail and fit of the parts excellent but I'm totally convinced about the shape, especially around the nose.
The instructions could have been clearer, especially if they had listed the parts not required for a Harrier GR1/3.
Painting diagrams a bit suspect in places.

Good to see progress and you have found some time at the work bench.

Harrier now has all the transfers in place. As you can see there are quite a lot left over, not just the obvious subject options, and not all of the stencils are applicable to the kit subject options so it's quite important to work through the instruction sheet very carefully because some are quite similar to others that are not to be used.

As you so rightly say, all the extra parts are left over from the previous incarnations of the Kinetic Harrier kits, Sea Harriers and 2 seat trainers. All Kinetic have done is just add another sprue and retained old ones even if only a couple of parts are required. Hence the care that is needed to ensure the correct part is used, ie instrument panels, seat, ariels etc.
In the meantime I have now airbrushed the 3 camouflage colours. Using 'Mr Hyde Masking Putty' from MRP, the bigger gaps are then filled with masking tape.

Next Step. The Harrier is always a tricky painting process. Here you can see the intake bell and inner surfaces have been painted before the outer components have been attached, also I have found it best to paint the undersurfaces of the wings, yes, they are painted!, with Lt Aircraft Grey. The fairings around the nozzles are painted with DSG and DG before attaching the wing. Fortunately the wing to fuselage is a very good fit and it will just be a case of masking the undersurfaces before attaching to the fuselage.

A few days ago I started my next project. The Kinetic 1/48th Harrier GR1-GR3 kit.
In the box there are a very large number of parts, many of which are not required for the GR1, as this is the latest kit in the series which includes the Sea Harrier and two seat trainer versions.
I found it quite important to follow the instructions as there are several instrument panels, seats, wings, fins etc.
I'm building mine as a very early 1 Sqn machine with red white and blue roundels, these were based at Wittering in the early 1970's
So far so good. Cockpit detail is adequate and the fit of the fuselage components is good but care has to be taken with the main u/c bay / air brake insert to ensure that it lines up flush with the underside of the main components. I used a small piece of plastic card to hold it in position at the rear.

All 4 Mustangs are now finished and I've been searching for suitable stands that will take the 45th Recon Sqn Badge and pilots name.

I have been asked if I could produce 4 model RF-51 Mustangs for a friend whose father in law flew them out in Korea. Not too difficult given that they would be built on a production line basis, mounted on a stand in a flying pose.
Once I had got hold of 4 Airfix 1/72nd kits then project started. They needed pilots, wearing Polka Dot scarves and this required a bit of surgery to create a pose with them looking out to poet. The Camera windows were copied from the 1/48th Eduard kit, then it was plain sailing.
This shows the project so far, I'm trying to create the effect of the spinner, spinning and it is covered in polka dots, not there yet. Also I have to print the decals for all the Codes and serials once the paper arrives from the Big H.
Ultimately there will also be a 1/48th scale kit to go with them which will be fully detailed and on an informative base.

Wizzel, yes, completely OOB. Landing lights and wing tip navigation light covers are included and a very good fit.

Looking very good, I'm quite interested in the Nose Section which is going to be released as a separate kit. It won't get too out of hand size wise.

After what seems to be quite a time I've now finished the ARMA Hobby Hurricane IIc. Lovely little kit, the photo really doesn't do it justice. I shall be writing brief review of the kit and Humbrol's new Dropper paints for the Newsletter.

Sorry, you are all wrong! I may have many collections but Dinky Toys are not one of them!
