Hi All,
Just another project I've been working on.
It is a model of the 'Hindenburg Airship' in 1/720 by Revell.
It is a very straightforward model, but has a few sink marks in the moulding which need redressing, and the gondola's are very small, and need some fettling, originally got quite well on with the model, glued the fuselage together. Undercoated it and tried Alclad II Aluminium as a silver. I was not happy with the finish, or the sink marks visible.
These were filled with Mr. Surfacer 500, and the whole fuselage rubbed down with various grades of wet and dry until a really smooth finish was achieved.
Then once washed down and dry, I tried Vallejo Metal Finish Dialuminium, which is water based. With a few very thin misted coats the finish was brilliant, just what I was after.
Next job will be a varnish coat, before decaling and adding all the gondola's.

I will not make any comments about a bag of wind - hohohoho - I think I will pay for that comment

Hi All,
Done some more on this model.
Have now painted the gondola's. and propeller's, cockpit gondola, and added the decals.
With the restrictions on the use of 'swastika's in kits I had to try something new to me and print off some myself.
Basically, I searched the internet, found a suitable image, then reduced it to size and the printed that onto clear decal sheet. In turn the 'new' decals were given a coat of Microscale Decal Solvent Solution to protect the inks used.
I am pleased with the result, though I admit the 'swastika's' are probably a little too big, and also not quite 'dense' enough due to the printing method.
But, a first attempt has produced something acceptable.
I have also given the props a base coat of 'desert sand' prior to an oil burnt umber wash, the gondolas and 'cockpit gondola, gloss black prior to the silver finish.

Hi Kevin looks OK to me.
At Telford a couple of years ago needed some swastikas for the German cruiser Lutzow for air recognition and found this set at Xtradecal number x72036 German WWII Luftwaffe Swastikas - can't remember the cost but its me so they would not have been expensive.

Hi Kevin, I also have a set of swastikas for German aircraft.
I could do a deal for one swastika for a piece of toilet paper.

So Zak you are the person who has emptied all the shelf's of toilet rolls in the shops -- the "Bog Roll Magnet of Bempton"

Hi Zak,
Thanks, if I become desperate enough I might take you up on your offer.
Though I have retorted to wartime conditions, and have started to read the 'Financial Times' in place of the 'Sun'.
My newspaper sheets mean that my bottom is still 'cleannish', printing inks not withstanding. However my bottom, is much more informed as a result.

Hi All,
Well the weekend of 'social distancing' and being cold outside has allowed me to do some more modelling on the 'Hindenburg'
The model is virtually finished now, just need to a slight touch up of paint on the engine gondolas, cockpit, and touch in the two 'landing wheels' on the cockpit gondola and lower fin.
Adding all the silver glazing strips on the fuselage and cockpit gondola from fine slices of silver painted decal strip, made my eyeballs go crazy, and needed several rests in the session.
Some pictures of the near finished article follow:-

That's a lovely looking result Kev. I have a couple of sheets of swastikas too (I bought one from Hannants shop in Colindale back in 1994 when I was home on leave from Germany. I picked up quite a few second hand kits as well as a bottle each of microsol and microset both of which I still have and use! Back in those days, it was mail order via their catalogue (paper form) and I used to place orders on a regular basis because Ray our clothing storeman was a keen military modeller. Sorry for the digression! It's still a lovely looking result.

You now need a diorama to display it.
What about an airship hangar?
-
Buildi g a new hangar Dave?
-
I don't know how you guys manage to swap from one scale to another...
... I have enough trouble just keeping to 1/48th!
It's going to be an impressive model though Kev.

Hi Biggles,
Thanks.
Might go to 1/32 next!

Hi All,
Well managed to get this one finished.
Have added the control wires on the tail surfaces, touched in the control gondola, painted the landing wheels,
touched in the supporting struts of the engine gondolas.
A satisfying project.

Nice one for the collection

Excellent work.
All it needs now is a scenic setting.

Looking good Kevin. What colour did you use to undercoat before the silver/aluminium colour? I think someone at the club once suggested gloss black.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the comment. Yes, you are correct Gloss Black is a really good base for Silver.
I would normally do this for natural metal aircraft finishes.
However on this model, I just use Mr. Surfacer 1500 spray, which gave a super smooth finish, but I then polished it with some really fine micromesh cloth.
I then used Alclad II aluminium sprayed at about 15 psi, and though it sprayed okay the finish was a little too shiny and a bit grainy in places.
So I polished it again, and then used Vallejo Duraluminium from their metal finish range, and it went on really well. Just right amount of 'Silver' I was wanting.
Finally, I brushed on two thin coats of 'Kleer' in readiness for the decals.
Hope that answers your query.

I've been meaning to check out the Vallejo metal finish paints Kev. Do you recommend them?

Thanks Kevin for the info.

Hi Wizzel,
Yes, I like using them a lot.
They spray really beautifully, and very smooth.
Only thing is you need to seal the finish with Kleer or Vallejo's similar varnish.
Have included a picture of the three metal colours, black base, and varnish that I have.

Thanks Kev, I shall give them a go. I may have to put an order in to Hannants soon - what would I search for to find the plain decal sheet for canopy frames? I may as well chuck some of that on the list too. I had a quick look but every search I do brings back about 4 million results!
