1/35 mine with narrow gauge railway.
The ore will be delivered from the working face using a narrow gauge railway.
1/35 scale equates to 8.709 mm = 1 ft.
I will use track with a gauge of 16.5 mm and so this will be just about 2 ft gauge.
I purchased some V skip trucks to carry the ore.
These are resin with some metal parts.
-
As you can see they are not very complicated and go together well, I have three to build.
I hope to have some sort of mechanism whereby they are discharged into the truck.
-
One built, I will take it apart to paint.
-
Looking good - have you decided what type of mine it will be yet ??????
-
Heavy Metal probably.
I have a liking for Tungsten, I can then use Wolfram somewhere, but things may change.
I did think about uranium as well.
-
What about the Ime Mine?
-
Skip truck looks great. It'll get the Zak treatment I presume for the finishing?
-
It will be undercoated, given a coat of rust coloured paint and the weathered and more rust added.
Meanwhile on the 3' x 2' baseboard the track has been laid and wired up.
-
A mine of information eh!
-
He is very deep !!!
-
Wow! This is going to be some diorama.
-
Looking good,
Nice to have a higher and lower level.
Bigkev
-
Some of us know where we belong!
-
So that's you and me on the bottom level then Haddock.

Underground for you two.

Zak has demoted us to troglodyte - or is that a promotion ?????

Promotion in your case!

Thank you very much kind sir ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thank you very much kind sir ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
I should think so too!
-
Back to model railways ehh..
James will like this one.
-
A bit more scenery added.
-
So that's you and me on the bottom level then Haddock.
Underground for you two.
Or under water!
-
Trying to come up with a mechanism for tipping the v skips into the wagon.
-
It is marvellous what a bit of Lego can do.
Mechanism installed and working.
The pictures should help explain it.
-
Excellent - takes me back to my time teaching ( or trying to, before you say it) technology in secondary schools.
-
Thanks Martin,
I have thought of a name.
It is not really a mine, more open cast/ quarry-ish and so..........................
Kudby Ores.
Sorry, its the best available from my addles brian.
-
Ingenious Dave. This should be a fantastic diorama. I wonder where it's going to live?
-
Addled brain or not - sound good to me
-
Brilliant Zak,
Bigkev
-
I am having problems with my incline, its a bit steep and the truck are not happy with the slope and curve, back to the drawing board and try to ease the curves.
-
The trials and tribulations of Isambard Kingdom Smith -- hohohoh - you will fix it in the end. ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Trying to come up with a mechanism for tipping the v skips into the wagon.
Have you thought of a bloke with big muscles?
Haddock.
-

Haddock.
Yes, he will stood by the skip. The mechanism is so it can be operated "no hands" so to speak, from the rear of the layout.
-
Corrugated shed built as per Nissen huts in Battle of Britain thread.
It disguises the mechanism for righting the skips.
It will be painted and rusted.
-
Tree under construction - wire coated with Polytex,
Scenic work under way,
-
Polytex must love you....!
Trees from polytex and other materials, now that's a new technique to watch and observe.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Looking good Dave.
-
Finally had chance to catch up on this build. It's looking good Dave, hope your incline and balance problem stay resolved!!!
-
More scenic work.
-
Looks like it will be fully operational.
-
Looks like it will be fully operational.
It is fully working.
The tree continues to grow.
-
Sign for the quarry/mine.
Made from Slaters Plastic letters and plastic-card.
They must be about 25 years old.
It needs painting.
-
Like the sign.
-
Made from Slaters Plastic letters and plastic-card.
They must be about 25 years old.
They still make them - and the letters are still the same - I just need to find out which letters to use for each word - hohohho
Are yours from the Victorian era - ho hohoho
-
Hi Zak,
Never knew they did lettering, that's a new one to me.
Unless your like Martin, about 200 years old.....ho, ho ho.
Bigkev

It is available in lots of different sizes, just remove the letters and stick them onto plastic-card.
For station signs and such.
-
Just looking for the "T" to finish - your in trouble now Kevin - hohohoho
-
More progress.
-
Turned over a new leaf.
Working on the tree.
-
Excellent stuff. The scenery looks great.
-
Leaf it out.
More on the foliage.
-
Think you are barking up the wrong tree if you are looking for sensible comments - hohohho
-
That's a re -leaf!
-
Forestation continues.
Sorry messy photos.
-
Very nice. The rusty rails into the undergrowth look good.
-
Hi Zak,
Like the rusty vehicle parts, and the groundwork.
Bigkev
-
Agree with Kevin, I’ll have to try a tree one of these days.
Bob c
-
A windswept oak and a broad leaf tree under construction.
-
More scenic work across the lhs of the layout.
-
Excellent.
-
This is a man's train set, looks really good.
-
Speechless!!
-
My first attempt with static grass.
-
Looks good to me
-
Hi Zak,
Looks really good.
I've been watching it for 15 minutes, and I haven't seen a blade of grass move!, ho, ho, ho.
Must teach me how to control my lawn in the same manner......!

No wind on my railway, only after curry.
-
Several layer can be built up with grasses of different colours and sizes to get different effects,
-
No lawn mower then?
-
Looks like 'No Mow May' in miniature, great work.
-
Hi Zak,
Great turf and grassy area's.
Very realistic.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Grass looks really good.
Bob c
-
Ballasting in progress.
-
Hi Zak,
Nice to see you are branching out.
Bigkev
-
Will not ask if he is "main lining" - hohohhoho
-
That's fabulous! I love the way you can tackle any type of model and produce something amazing. How are you finding the static grass application? I love it, it add that finishing touch.
I now have a burning desire to find an old ZX Spectrum and waste the rest of my life playing Manic Miner!
-

I saw tour grass and decided to have a go.
I like the effect and with the layering spray it gets even better.
I mix different colours as well.
-
Yes, you can produce an endless variety of terrain styles by mixing lengths and colours. I didn't buy any aerosol layering spray but use a spray bottle with diluted matt mod podge instead. I do have a spray can of Halfords lacquer though so I may try that and see what happens. A lot of people airbrush the grass too as well as mixing colours as I found out from watching videos on the you tube.
-
Excellent Dave.

Yes, a lot of good stuff on the net.
As I get more adventurous I may try other techniques.
At the moment I am struggling to model, after a weeks visit from the mother in law.
I need to get my brain back in focus.
-
The sequence will be something like this.
Loaded trucks arrive
One is uncoupled
Truck is taken up the incline
The ore is tipped into the truck
Truck is righted
Empty (ish) truck is left in siding
Loco returns down the incline to pick up another
Once three are up the top they return to the bottom for more ore.
-
The rest of the sequence.
-
A most excellent diorama. Very impressive and working too.
-
A most excellent diorama. Very impressive and working too.
But still nor finished, more to come after the allotment has finished, fruit, peas, beans, potatoes and so on.
-
Rather a mess, been away and still picking fruit and vegetables.
-
Hi Zak,
They say tidiness is the sign of a sick mind.
I think your mind appears to be very healthy, now Msea's workplace is.............
Nice work in progress, hope the veg and fruit tastes nice....from the allotment.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Great looking diorama. Same question as ever - Where are you going to put it?
-
Great looking diorama. Same question as ever - Where are you going to put it?
Well, it will have another 3 foot extension as well, so who knows, the garage?
Didn't really think it through did I.
Thought it would give the grandkids something to play with?
-

Will you be able to post a short video of it when it's running. I'm sure that would be of interest to us all.
-
Will you be able to post a short video of it when it's running. I'm sure that would be of interest to us all.
Is it possible to do that on here?
I will give it a go later,
-
That would be good to see it running.
-
Don't forget we need sound effects as well ::) ::) ::)
-
Sound effects should be easy, there's plenty chuffing goes on at the Meetings (remember them?)
-
Don't forget we need sound effects as well ::) ::) ::)
I have been looking into this, I cannot find anything at a price I like - cheap, yes.
Also most sound modules are for mainline locos not this small narrow gauge stuff, the sound would be all wrong for a small petrol/ diesel engine.
-
Silly me - I just though we would get you saying "chuff chuff chuff" in the background - hohohho
-
Chuff.
The building takes shape on the lower level.
The interior has been pinched from an earlier model.
The roof was made with the usual corrugated technique.
-
The upper area is just about complete and with working point lever.
-
I remember the man fixing his bike from before
The whole thing is looking very impressive and on top of that it moves, what more could we ask for.
-
Really excellent Dave.
-
Interior light added to the workshop/shed.
This is a 12v LED.
-
Will you animate the figure and get the bike wheel turning and motor bike noises ::) ::) ::) ::) hohoho - its looking great even without sound and movement.
-

I have found a company that produces sound modules, just waiting for then to get back to me.
Board two, may have more movement, but that's for the future.
-
Very posh.

I might be available to a few 'hoots' and 'whoo hoo's' for the right price, probably won't be as good, but cheaper!

I was working on the underside of the layout and it fell over -B _ _ _ _ R!
Major repair job now underway, the joys of modelling.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!
-
I know the feeling - I either break something by hand or if I drop something and it is heavy, it goes right in the middle of a model.
We know you will fix it and make it even better than it was before - did you use " naughty nautical language" - hohohohhoho
-

I used lots of technical nautical language,

I used lots of technical nautical language,
It does not do the model any good but I always feel better after a good rant
-
Repairs coming along.
Now lots of details to add,
-
Attempt to upload a video.
You may have to download it to see it.
-
Downloaded the video. It works and I have just watched it. Cheered me up on a wet and miserable day at the seaside aka Hornsea.
-

I may try more as things progress.
-
Automatic unloading of the ore (vermiculite in reality).
-
The diorama looks excellent Dave. Will try downloading the video.
-
Excellent Dave cheered me up watching this in action - only 2 small problems.
First you did not sit in the background going chuff chuff chuff.
Second the "time and motion" people will be chasing you up, the truck did not empty all its content so this will be costing the company lots of money every time you empty a truck - hohohoho
Guess its another clip round the ear for me when I see you ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Two at least!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
It'll never catch on!!!!!
well done.
-
Hi Dave,
Great stuff, excellent to see it working.
Bigkev
-
Amazing!
Truly Amazing!
-
My grand daughter really enjoyed playing trains,
It is now on free standing legs and board number 2 has been assembled.
I now need to sort my room out to accommodate them.
-
The main working feature on board 2 will be this.
Any ideas?
-
Will it lift the train onto a different level ?????
-
One of those travelling bucket thingy's.
-
It is for loading the V skip wagons, so almost on the right lines.
This picture may help.
-
A crane with a big bucket?

A crane with a big bucket?
Almost.

That should keep you busy for a while Dave. Looks like you've got a good start.
-
The basic concept works, it now needs detail added, rivets and so on and the cab.
-
Blimey. That's what I call scratch building. Magic.
-
This build is something special.
Bob c
-
Blimey!!!
MEGA BUILD!
Bigkev
-
More progress, the back superstructure has been built.
It slides on and off the allow access to the wiring and motors inside.
-
Hi Zak,
great stuff.
This reminds me of the excavator at Beamish Open air Museum.
Bigkev

great stuff.
This reminds me of the excavator at Beamish Open air Museum.
Bigkev
I first went to Beamish in the mid 1960's, the excavator was in bits then, with an old bloke with a wire brush sitting among it all.
In those days there wasn't much and it was much lower key, but still enjoyable.

Well, at least your modelling is faster than that 'Old Bloke'.
Is your example, inspired by that visit to Beamish, all those years ago??

I am not sure it was Beamish inspired or just a genral interest in Ruston Bucyrus and related topics?

Fantastic work, puts us kit builders to shame. Once I get the sheds sorted I'll have to start on some dioramas (that may keep MSea happy?)
-
Yes it will Chris -hohohoho
-
This looks to be a most impressive build with all of it's working parts. I remember Beamish from 1973 and well recall the collection of bits for the excavator. That was all they seemed to have back then. It's moved on a lot since.
-
Yes it will Chris -hohohoho
You.....
Ever Happy....?
Miracles do occur then......! ho, ho, ho, ho,
Bigkev
-
As board 1 nears completion, I am trying to create a series of mini dioramas within the whole.
Bulldozer being refuelled.
Workshop with vehicles being worked on - motorcycle, tractor awaiting a tyre.
Fully equipped workshop.
Brick shelter under construction, still to add tools and so on.
Rubbish dump.
Unloading/ refuelling area.
Workman's hut.
Working point levers.
-
Hi Zak,
I like the idea of 'Diorama's within a bigger diorama'
Is the tractor to be considered an ex-USAAF impressed into another role?
I do like the idea of implementing of previous builds, you must be honorary 'Yorkshire' now, you are displaying real 'Frugal' characteristics.
'Eay Bah Gum Lad', thas doin sumat reet!

I am not sure, the owner of Kudby Ores has a collection of tractors that he renovates and then sells on, he is an extractor fan! Boom Boom!
No I think your scenario may fit better,
-
I am blown away with that comment - hohohhohoho
-
Magnificent Dave.
-
Excavator on the next section.
-
This just keeps getting bigger and better.
-
Where are you going to store this then Dave?
-
I have re-jigged my room, it is now on permanent display and ready to be operated - well I hope so.
Lots to be done on the second board yet,
-
So you can now play all day - hohohohoh - its looks great
-
Still lots of work to do.
Scenery and another train with skip trucks.
The excavator is somewhat temperamental, now who could that be modelled on, oh yes, me!
-
YOU temperamental - you will be saying next that you are grumpy - hohohoho
-
How long will the "permanent display" last?
-
Who knows?
Until tomorrow at least.
-
It’s looking good, I like the small scenes, brings it a together.
Bob c
-
Thanks Bob, I just need to maintain my enthusiasm now.
-
Looking excellent Dave. I agree with Bob.
-
Some pieces of rolling stock and a steam loco under construction.
Just been undercoated - between digging up potatoes!
-
Scratch built or from kits?
-
They are kits from the same range as the V skips I built earlier - Smallbrook Studios - resin with metal parts for wheels and so on.
-
I made the excavator so it could be removed for applying the scenic work/ transportation.
It simply plugs into a hole and the electrics.
-
A small mini diorama added by the front point lever.
Due to the inclement weather the manager has decided to build a shed for the man on duty at the point.
Bricks were cast from plaster and pre-coloured.
-
Really looking forward to seeing this in the flesh. wondering how you'll get it all to a club night.
Haddock.
-

Haddock.
Not sure I ever will?
Maybe in sections?
-
The Cliff face under construction.
Layers of thick corrugated card laid in place.
This is the coated with polytex or something similar.
This is coat one, it will probably need another once it dries.
-
Rolling stock painted and weathered,
-
Weathering looks good.
-
The brickwork mini diorama looks good as does the cliff. Excellent weathering on the rolling stock.

Love the weathering very realistic
-
Thanks Martin,
The mine just had to have a small locomotive.
Resin kit on a Hornby 0-4-0 chassis.
-
What a charming little loco. Fine work Dave.
-
Fantastic work Dave. Lots of progress.
Is that a Smoky Joe Chassis??
-

Allotment power all the way.

-
Flat Wagon, Sand Hutton Railway chassis with a load of bricks.
Side tip wagons on a similar chassis.
Smallbrook Studio resin kits.
-
Great work, as ever.
-
Your diorama just grows and grows Dave. Excellent loco and wagons. Looking very reallistic.
-
Thanks Chris.
Making a tunnel mouth/mine entrance from cast bricks. The mould is to the right.
-
What are you casting them from and where did you get the mould from ?
-
What are you casting them from and where did you get the mould from ?
I got the mould from Mighty Lancer and I am casting in plaster of Paris at the moment.
Green Stuff World - silicone mould, three in the pack for different shapes, only one is really useful.
£10.71.
Look on his website and search for brick moulds.
-
Thanks - will do
-
Meticulous work Dave.
-
Beyond Words!
-
Portal in position, different castings produced bricks of different colours, I should have cast loads and mixed them up more.
I may have to give them a dry brush with something.
-
Heart like a dustbin lid!!
-

I think he means he likes you and your models..!
Bigkev
-
More bricklaying - a support pillar for a shed roof.
Only three to build.
-
You certainly go for the detail Dave.
-
More bricklaying and working on this area of the second board.
Only one more brick pillar to make - just another 240 bricks to cast!
-
I have a small job on the front garden wall - are you available - hohohhoho -- excellent work on the bricks
-
I have a small job on the front garden wall - are you available - hohohhoho -- excellent work on the bricks
I'll pop round, didn't realise your garden was in this scale.
-
Yes it is BUT the banana that is producing fruit is FULL size - hohoho
-
Truely excellent detail Dave.
-
Roof added from home made corrugated iron. The whole thing can easily be removed for access to the interior.
-
Painting and so on.
You may also notice the beginnings of a small stream.
Off to N Yorkshire for a few days, work on hold for a while.
-
Looking good.
-
Electrostatic grass laying.
-
I would like to see a demo of this sometime - next modelling day?
-

I will bring it along to the next meeting, mine is a cheap one, Wizzel has a more expensive one!

It'll be interesting anyway.
-
Small brick coal bunker and the puddle/pool under construction.
The owner is obviously well ahead of health and safety measures.
The old workings have flooded and may be a danger to non-swimmers!
-
Excellent work as ever Dave.
-
It's turning out to be a great diorama.
-
Electrostatic grass layered.
-
It’s looking great.
Bob c
-
A lot of head scratching and not much work.
-
Testing the excavator, it works after a fashion, I now need to construct a loading hopper so that the ore(vermiculite) always goes in the v truck!
I had to add lead weight to the jib, I now need to disguise this as well.
-
No doubt you'll solve the problem!!
-
Amazing diorama. Where are you going to put it Dave?
-
Amazing diorama. Where are you going to put it Dave?
At present it is in my modelling room.
I guess it will stay there until I get fed up of it in the way.
Or I get permission to put it elsewhere - I'm not holding my breath on that one.
-
Hopper to assist loading trucks from the crane, plastic card and rod construction.
-
More scenic work.
-
has it turned into a snow scene - hohohoho will it be more grass or just crushed ore
-
Probably mud and crushed ore with sparse grass and weeds.
-
Looking very nice. I like the hopper.
-
Looking very nice. I like the hopper.
It needs rusting as does the excavator.
-
Just wondering what the next project could be when this one is finally finished.
Suggestions folks??
Haddock.

Haddock.
I was wondering about a small 15in railway like many seaside places have, but then again maybe not.
Before you say it Scarborough was 20 in gauge.
-
Before that ot whatever else takes my fancy, I need some more motive power, here is Simplex number 2.
-
Very nice.
-
Great Work Zak.
-
Fantastic work. Perhaps your next project should be building somewhere in the back garden to house all this?
-
Fantastic work. Perhaps your next project should be building somewhere in the back garden to house all this?
At present it is my modelling room, with just about enough room left to model.
-
The last two scratch built point levers installed.
-
Real modelling.
-
Should that be RAIL modelling Chris - hohohohoho
-
More rail modelling.
Driver in progress for Simplex no2.
Tractor with loader added to the scene.
-
Looks really good.
Bob c

Looks really good.
Bob c
Yep, it really does.
