Title: Messerschmitt Bf 110 G-4
Post by: cph64 on November 17, 2023, 04:06:33 PM
This is the Italeri kit of the Bf 110 G-4 nightfighter that I bought when Arrow Models had their shop closing down sale, so it's been in the stash a while. Consisting of 68 light grey parts, a clear sprue for the canopy, comprehensive instructions, an etch brass set and decals for 5 options, 4 Luftwaffe and 1 Hungarian. I was going to build it as one of the Luftwaffe options but then I came across the Colour Conundrum article 'White Luftwaffe Nightfighters 1943/44 Part 1. This showed a G-4 with the wing fronts, engines and nose painted greyish-white. To quote the article 'It is suggested that because white was the colour that reflected the most incident light, that it was found to be beneficial to paint the front of the Night Fighters white in an attempt to reduce their silhouette against the night sky. RAF Coastal Command employed exactly this camouflage technique on it's anti-submarine aircraft'. Vallejo 71.119 was given in the article as RLM 67 Weiss, this is 'off-white', so a bottle was obtained. There is also a profile of a Heinkel He 219A-0 in the article and as I have a varaiant of one of these in the stash the bottle will come in handy. The Bf 110 also features on the cover of Nachtjagd Combat Archive 1943 Part 1 and inside there is a better photo. Sorry Martin but I'm building it as seen before the crash!!

No go with the crash, a chance to model some water.

It could be a 'last ditch' attempt!

Would make an interesting diorama though.
Cheers

You've got me thinking.......
Anyway back to the build. The instructions call for the interior parts to be painted in RLM02 Grau but by this stage of the war they were RLM66 Schwarzgrau so the Tamiya equivalent was used, with detail picked out using Vallejo Red, White and Yellow. The etch brass could have done with annealing as the smaller parts for the seat belts didn't want to bend easily. I've left the 'rabbits ear' of the console up so they can be bent to fit once the two halves of the fuselage are joined.

Too true Kev!!!
The fuselage halves have been joined but as the panel lines are raised some of these have been lost in the tidy up. Another thing I had to watch out for during this stage was that the 'towel rail' aerial underneath was already moulded onto one side. Once happy with this the wings, radiators, nose and tailplane assembly were all added. Lastly the main u/c legs were put in place to ease painting. Then the cockpit was masked and it was out with a coat of Halfords Primer which was left to cure for a few days before Xtracrylic RLM 76 v.1 was applied to the underside, rudders, u/c doors  and all small bits that hang underneath.

Hmmm.......( Tracy said "Do they realise how small our cottage is?" Anyway back to the build. With the cockpit and fuselage sides masked with a combination of Tamiya tape and putty an initial coat of Humbrol RLM75 Grauviolett was applied. Now this is a fairly old pot and being Chinese Humbrol it was very grainy and caused no end of blockages in the airbrush. Once cured (all round) Xtracrylic RLM 74 Graugrun was applied.  Initially I didn't get close enough, or drop the pressure enough, to prevent some misting where I didn't want it but once I realised this I finished the areas I wanted to work on and will now get a new pot of RLM 75 to redo the Grauviolett tighter.

I ordered two pots of Grauviolett as they were on offer on Amazon and once they arrived the paintwork was touched up. Once cured Vallejo RLM 67 'Off-white' was sprayed freehand to the front areas. This was the first time I'd tried freehand in such a way so the resultant overspray was tidied up both above and below. The canopy framework according to one source is incorrect being from the Bf 110E moulding but looking at various sources and having a vacform G canopy on stock it looks correct to me. I'm using the kit canopy instead of the vacform as I want to model the a/c with it open. The frames have been hand painted RLM 66 for the interior and all further paintwork will be tidied up at a later date.

Impressive freehand airbrushing there Chris.
Not sure I could achieve the same great result.
Cheers,
Kevin

With the painting tidied up it was time for a coat of Klear and making a start on decalling. I've used a mix of kit and spare/stock decals with the G9 of NJG1 has been altered to C9 of NJG5, the A is from the kit decals as is the B.  I couldn't find a K in my spares so I'm not completing the model as the a/c shown in the photo. This brings me on to another dilemma. The kit has markings for, and shows, a G-4 fitted with early FuG 202 radar mounted on the nose, as per the article I'm working from, unfortunately the only part of this set up provided is the main bracket having just the main arms, which are too short. So I'm attempting to fit longer ones which hopefully won't look out of place and then ones for the antennae. I've sourced the latter from my spares, being left over from my BV 222 build. Failing this I'll be fitting the first generation FuG 220 supplied.

The exhausts have been fitted as have the propellers and spinners. I decided to paint the latter two the same as the front of the a/c as it seemed logical to me that they would match it and so blend in. The drop tanks have been fitted and as there are no forward armament parts in the kit these were sourced from spares. A version of the FuG 202 has been made using the kit part, Evergreen strip and the BV 222 parts as previously mentioned.

Final pieces now in place, aileron weights, pitot tube, underside aerial and boarding ladder. The rear machine guns are in place plus the top mast and DF loop have been added to the canopy and all the parts for this fitted using Glue and Glaze. This is a temporary measure as due to the weather I don't want to risk the satin varnish 'frosting' so will wait until things improve (June?). Last to be fitted was the FuG 202 arramgement. For the engine and muzzle exhaust staining I thought I'd try Revell Black weathering powder and am happy with the result, it shows up better on the underside with this being lighter.
The end result isn't what I had in mind when I set out but I'm happy with it and have learnt a few more things along the way.

You have done a nice job there Chris.
Definitely one to be proud of.
I like the weathering powder effect from the exhaust, looks really nice.
