Modelling Projects / N/S Savannah
« on: August 22, 2016, 01:03:42 PM »
She was the first nulcear powered cargo/passenger ship and was launched in 1959, taken into service in 1962 and taken out of service in 1972.
First - thank you Haddock for the model - but it came with the proviso that he expected me to do something different/strange with it.
So lots of racking what is left of my brain and some ideas came to mind but not good enough I think to satisfy Haddock. Then it hit me ( no,not she who must be obeyed) but how was the ship greeted when she was launched and how would she be greeted now.
So she will be placed just leaving a long jetty with people on the left dressed in 1960 style with pleasure boats and greeting placards saying such things as "Go Savannah Go" and "Nuclear power is good and the future". The people on the right will be dressed in 2100 style with greenpease demonstration boats around her, and anti-nuclear posters. The sea will also change from bright blue and smooth on the left to darker and choppy on the right.
AND BEFORE SOME OF YOU COMPLAIN THAT THE MODEL IS POLITICALLY AND ENVIROMENTALLY BIASED - ITS JUST AN IDEA TO SHOW THE CHANGING ATTITUDES OF SOME PEOPLE OVER THE INTERVIENING YEARS. AND AS I ALWAYS SAY ITS JUST A MODEL AND ITS FOR FUN.

Modelling Projects / The Demeter
« on: July 29, 2016, 04:51:45 PM »
Could not decide on a topic for the "Yorkshire" comp. Though about HMS Bounty as she was built in Hull ( take too long to make AND WOULD HAVE TO BUY A MODEL ) looked in the stash and thought about converting a north sea fishing trawler to one my dad had sailed on ( seeing as it would be another ship my dad sailed on, would like to spend more time and effort on it ) last idea was converting HMS Iron Duke into HMS Marlborough who was torpedoed at the battle of Jutland and was sent to the Humber area ( bit of a tenuous link )
Then "she who must be obeyed"  came up with Count Dracula arriving in Whitby from Varna.
So on with the DEMETER. ( I keep calling her the Dementor - must stop watching Harry Potter films
Photo show rough 3D model to get size.
Before you ask Zak the scale is 1/72
And before you all get your copies of the book out -I know that she arrived with only one body strapped to the wheel - its artistic licence - or as I say its only a model and its for FUN.

Modelling Projects / Post-Apocalyptic World 2121
« on: May 14, 2016, 09:59:50 AM »
I must stop watching so many films - have just finished Mad Max Fury Road and have decided to try some car modelling.
Being interested in the way Disney design items,  they allways have a FULL back story to base any item on. So have sorted this out, will just need Kevin and Zak to choose an area next meeting.
The cars are poundshop - three for £1 - so could add them to my model for under £20 next meeting for the comp - or is it just one model only ??????
The car has been stripped down and wheel arch extenders added, seat belts and wide wheels made. The strange frame is to allow the car to have extra ground clearance.
I think I need to get out more.

General Discussion / MSea needs rayon balls
« on: April 19, 2016, 05:05:13 PM »
That topic should get a few jokes at my expense, but now down to the important stuff.
Yes I want rayon balls they are like cotton wool balls but different material. I read an article in an American mag and they have used them for the white tops on waves and say its superior to cotton wool - which i have tried and don't like.
I think they are a medical product and looking on Amazon all I find is £122 for case of 4000 units  -- ALL I WANT IS A COUPLE TO TRY -- is that too much to ask.
ANY IDEAS ?????

General Discussion / USEFUL BOOKS
« on: March 29, 2016, 12:29:35 PM »
This is a new section on the web site for anybody to place information about books they have read and think might be of interest to other club members ( NO Wizzel we don't need to know about 50 Shades of Grey -- thank you very much. ) You can follow the format below or just place the information in any way you like.
I hope this will be a help to club members, if not it will gradually wither and die, so use it or lose it.

Modelling Projects / H M S Warspite
« on: March 19, 2016, 10:53:20 AM »
Found this model very cheap and could not resist starting it.
Have seen a picture of Warspite just ashore and then nearly fully stripped down in Prussia Cove , Cornwall 1947 - decided it would make a good model part stripped down - (sorry Haddock its another wreck.)
The funnel has been made with some outer plates removed and showing girders.

General Discussion / Tacky Glue
« on: February 12, 2016, 07:23:42 PM »
Thanks Haddock for another tip to help with the modelling, the "Tacky Glue" to fasten very small brass etch parts.
Found a tube in Boyes in Brid on the first floor amongst the craft and material section. It was 99p for a 60ml tube and seems to be the same stuff as you found in Hobbycraft in Hull-- and keeping with the club motto "its got to be cheap" it is a whole 1p cheaper than the one you got --- Ho Ho Ho Ho

Modelling Projects / Christmas Pressy For Oggy
« on: December 15, 2015, 07:41:24 PM »
Just to prove I have not been idle - this is a 1/350 scale model I have made for my friend Oggy for Christmas - he is a M.A.M.I.L. so have made him in a gold lycra cycling suit and his red bike. It is fastened onto a cork from a wine bottle and a clear plastic top glued onto that for protection - the pva glue should dry clear - I hope !!
For those who don't understand MAMIL -- it stands for Middle Aged Man In Lycra.

Modelling Projects / Ilyushin IL-28 Beagle
« on: December 04, 2015, 01:12:30 PM »
Well waiting for other things to dry -- so will move over to the light side ( sorry Haddock ) and make a plane. It will be for the competition "less than £20".
Yet again the idea comes from a picture - the photo of the Beagle on display in a run down state, with the plexiglass yellowed and the front glass sections still clear got me thinking ( I will try not to do this very much, as it will damage what is inside my head. ) I will lower the front and one side wheel as if the hydraulic system had been damaged through age ( sounds like most of our group ) and heavily weather the plane.

Modelling Projects / Budapest 1956
« on: November 17, 2015, 01:59:16 PM »
Well back to a model I started 3 years ago and only got about 80% finished - it will now be finished for a competition. This was before I was able to access the site so will post the photos taken at the time.
Like most of my models the idea came from reading (see the photo of the books.)
When the Russian tankers entered Budapest they had to close down the tanks, and could only see out of the vision slits ( not easy to see ) the Hungarians strung rows of pots and pans across the roads and the Russians thought they where arial mines so this stopped them and allowed the Hungarians to close up and attack  them,
The base is MDF and plaster on top to form the street.
