Neil asked me to build a 1:48 scale Fordson N tractor for his latest build involving Westland Whirlwinds from 137 and 263 Squadrons.
It will be very like the two in the Battle of Britain thread, but I thought I would document the build as i went along.
Unfortunately I dumped all my scribblings while building the other - never throw anything away!
-
Rear wheel construction.
Lots of discs of 20 thou plastic card.
-
Will this be like the work you did for the BofB - started with one airfield building and then ended up with HOW MANY ?

I hope not, I have other models on hold while I do this.
I am not happy with the tyres and so may re-do them.
-
More bits of plastic and filler.
-
Look pretty good to me.
-
Your scratch building skill always amazes me, Zak

The wheels look superb to me Dave.
Like Kevin, I'm astounded by your scratchbuilding skills...
... you're a proper modeller as opposed to a kit assembler.
I'm getting on with the Whirlwinds, (all three of them), and have got to the decal... sorry, transfer application stage!
Got to be careful here and model from a photo of the speciafic airframe I'm modelling as the blighters placed the fuselage roundels on slightly different positions from aircraft to aircraft!
I've already had to repaint the engine nacelles on all three as the upper surface camouflage demarcations also varied from airframe to airframe!
Having fun though!
Tally Ho!

More bits of plastic rod, card and disc stuck together.
-
Blimey! Coming together nicely.
-
More bits of plastic stuck on.
The front under construction.
The last photo shows what it should look like.
-
Could the "some sort of compressor" be a hydraulic pump?
Looks good.

Looks good.
I wondered if it was some kind of air reservoir for the hydraulic system?
Front jib under construction.
-
Held together with Blu Tac - a few rivets and nuts to add.
-
Are the rivets for the counters - hohoho

Of course, so get counting.
-
Boy! You're going some on this model Dave. Should be finished by teatime.
-
More research reveals that they were built by the Stanhay Company of Ashford in Kent. They made vehicles converted for a variety of agricultural jobs, many used compressed air.
The jib is operated by compressed air.
They built a machine for picking up apple boxes and so on - one offs mainly.
-
Undercoated.
It needs a rub down when dry.
-
It looks as good as any manufactured kit.

Fantastic work, makes my flatbed for the Monarch pale into insignificance :(
-
Excellent scratch build.
-
just......... Superb building skills!

Tractor painted and transfers added,
It will still need a bit of weathering.
-
Looks really good, a lot more convincing with a coat of paint.
Haddock.

Haddock.
Also a good coat of muck
-
Fantastic Zak.
'Biggles' ought to be really over the moon with this rendition to go with his 'Whirlwind's'.
This is modelling at its best.

Now its onto Bomb Trolleys.
RAF type B.
-
All plastic rod, card and strip construction.
I put this together last night just yo get a feel for the dimensions and to attempt some wheels, no details added yet. Like Airfix this is the first test shot.
The springs do not look right.
The bottom picture is the Flightpath one, the best picture that I could find.
-
Excellent tractor. Bomb trolley looks good.
-
Springs altered on trolley and some rivets added.
-
Bomb trolleys undercoated.
They lack real accuracy but will just about pass muster.

Will Mr Robinson notice? Look great.
-
I bet Mr. Robinson will be doing jigs and cartwheels when he sees them.
They look excellent and with the accompanying Tractor will make a great addition to his planned diorama/setting.
Super stuff.

My Accurate Armour tractor arrived on Thursday.
Quite a simple build.
A resin kit.
Basic paintwork applied.
A comparison of the two.
-
Both look excellent. You're the tractor man.
-
Ooooooo ar!
-
I've got a brand new ............................................
No, not a tractor, more the Wurzels!
-
Incredible work as ever.
-
Transfer added.
Weathering and varnish to go.
-
Now to attempt a Bedford refueler! (Is it one L or two, the spill chucker suggests two, but is this an Americanism?

I am the last one to ask - hohohohhoho
-
Looks really good.

The RAF refueller is causing me problems, I really don't like the suggested colour scheme for 1942/3 and may opt for an earlier one. It may be my eyes but the two browns do not look right.
Brush painted just to try, i think it will be quickly removed.
-
Scratch built rear body on a commercial chassis.
It is not quite 1:48 scale, will Mr. Robinson notice?
Balsa former wrapped with plastic card.
Excuse the rough paint job, it is the first coat after a lot of problems. some judicious rubbing down after the paint has cured.
-
Looks OK to me - if Mr Robinson complains he can always make them himself - hohohohhoho

You are a hard man.
-
Excellent scratch building Dave.
-
Mr Inspiration, that's what Zak is.
Bigkev
-
I just need to add some glazing.
The colour is not right, but I like it, but will Mr. Robinson?
-
All finished, well as it ever will be.
All packed up ready for deliver to Mr. Robinson.
-
Don't forget the invoice, lol!!! What thickness sheet did you wrap the balsa former in, for future reference please.

A layer of 15 thou, but the Tamiya thicker glue ate through,so after sanding I wrapped with another layer and that seemed ok.

Thanks

Nicely finished there Dave. Will you be presenting the models to Mr Robinson at the next club meeting?

Already done at the last meeting.
