Trumpeter 1/35 Russian SAM-6 Antiaircraft Missile (00361)
« on: February 24, 2018, 01:10:04 PM »
Now that I am in missile mode, I bought this on EBay for 23.50 including P&P, is that cheap, I don't know but it seemed ok to me.
The kit seems to come from China and was produced in 2005, this is stamped on the box and the parts.
Initial impressions are good, parts are well moulded and the whole box of parts well presented.
The description on the box is a weird translation, pidgin English - lost in translation?
Here are pictures of the box, contents and artwork, just to whet your appetite before I begin.

Hi Zak,
Another interesting subject.
I think this was the type of missile system that was alleged to have been responsible for shooting down a Malaysian Airlines airliner over eastern Europe.
Perhaps somebody might know a bit more....................
Sure it will look impressive after the 'Zak' treatment.
Cheers,
Bigkev

I thought that I would adopt a different approach to building this model and try to show exactly how I built it, this may spell disaster!
I am starting with a photo of the most used tools, obviously others may be used and I will post these as and when I use them. I use a pair of side cutters to remove the part from the sprue(runner?), this is then cleaned up with a scalpel and sanding sticks or files.
The second photo shows some of the glues that I use, mainly plastic solvents with slightly different properties. My personal favourite is Slater's MEK-PAK, probably because it is the one that I have used the longest. I also like the Contacta one with a tube attached. Equally the Tamiya range also have their place. Superglue is used where etched brass needs to be added.
The last photo shows a large can of MEK that I purchased from Squires some years ago, I use this to top up a small bottle for use on the model bench - it is the Tamiya one with MEK written on it.
MEK is described as a hydrogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon.
I am not sure if it is still MEK -methyl ethyl ketone (butanone), I suspect not.

So, parts are removed from the sprue with the side cutters (1)

The parts are then cleaned up, the one at the bottom has been cleaned up (2)

The parts are the attached to the Hull (3)

So 1 and 2 will be repeated ad infinitum, so this will not be mentioned again.
The Hull was supplied as shown, a very clean moulding, no marks or filling needed.

I like this method and am looking forward to this build.

Here is further work on the wheels and sprockets.
I now have to decide whether to carry on construction or paint the underside?
The paint colour required according to the colour art work supplied is Gunze Sangyo 303, this equates to Humbrol 117 (Us Matt Light Green), I could not find a Tamiya equivalent but Vallejo do Model Air 71.092 or game Colour 890, so the decision is made. I have no colour so a visit to Boyes tomorrow(sorry BOYSES). So construction will continue for now.

The first photo is of the kit description on the side of the box, make of it what you will, its gibberish?
I know you think I do a lot of modelling but I have walked three miles today and made some soup as well. I may have spent 4 hours modelling today and this is it for now.
I build up a section of the individual track links using Contacta glue, this doe not set so quickly and allows the links to stick together but they can still be moulded around a sprocket or wheel.
The whole lot is then held in place with MEK.
There were ready made sections of track supplied for the bottom and top.
The kit say 26 individual links are needed per side, they supply 27, I only used 24 per side.

That's the worst translation on a kit I've ever seen and I've got a few in my stash, you can't even call it pidgin English. Good luck with the instructions.

The instructions are fine, no written words just exploded views.

I am now working on the top surface of the hull.
Grab handles are provided in plastic and I will use these.

I bought these jigs from a show a few years ago as they were cheap. I rarely use them as the handles are rarely the right size.
They do however produce nice handles.
The photo at the bottom shows the kit handle and one produced using the biggest jig and soft wire.
The kit is the one on the left.

Of course the kit contains etched brass and to be honest I have usually struggled with this, using a ruler and square is not ideal.
I bought the etched bending jig at Huddersfield this year and it has already proved its worth.
It makes the task a little easier and does ensure that pieces can be held well and then bent into shape.
I cut the brass from the fret with a large curved scalpel, the trick is to change the blade regularly.
Here I use it to bend a loop on the brass ready to receive a plastic piece.
I usually clean the brass with a fibre glass pencil prior to using superglue.
The brass is being bent around a small drill.
I apply the superglue with a cut off needle(the eye that is) - see pictures.
I place a blob of superglue on the shiny side of double sided tape, it will happily sit there for 10-15 minutes before going off.
The superglue can be removed from the needle with a flame - I use a cigarette lighter -it is also used to light a candle for stretching sprue.

Construction continued, no new techniques required, just remove the part clean it up and cement in place.
Remove and add and bend the etched brass.
Painting soon, well undercoating.

The lower and upper hulls have been undercoated.
This undercoat does give a nice finish.
I must also say that this is a nice kit, I like the feel of the plastic, it cuts and sands well, a pleasure to work with.

The only part that has required filling so far, the tip of the missile did not fit really well.
For this I used Squadron Green, I do also have white but prefer the green one. I do also us the Vallejo acrylic one and sometimes Milliput.

The dreaded carpet monster swallowed a bit, so far I have been unable to find it, it may turn up yet.
Just when you think it is all going so well.

Other photos show the missiles under construction, sometimes an extra hand is required.

Here is some more strange translation at work.

The completed model, it will come apart for painting.
