REVELL USS NEW JERSY IN 1:350
« on: December 21, 2017, 11:37:18 AM »
Got this from Croppers with Xmas and birthday vouchers. Not a cheap kit. Started it before Telford
The kit contains wood decks, lots of turned brass parts and two large frets, one brass, the other is nickel, plus of course, the plastic.
You could build the ship without using any of the extras but it would be horrible. The moulds are to be diplomatic, not to modern standards. Plus there are one or two errors in the instructions that could catch you with your pants down.
You can probably see lots of filler and shims with more to come. the moulds are quite tired, plenty of flash, slippage and mismatches. Disappointing so far.
These are the only pics I've taken to date, so lots more to come.
Haddock.

I've been busy, honest. It's just that with the horrible plastic and the amount of etched brass, a lot of effort doesn't produce much to look at, so to make my life easy, I've posted some shots of the usual Revell pictures of the finished model as shown on the box, except it ain't finished as it ain't painted.
To go a bit further, I've decided to build as many sub-assemblies as I can before sloshing any paint on or till I get fed up.
The brass is numbered from 1 to 355, quite a few of the parts are multiples of the same part No ( there are 10 part No 355). Some of the sub-assemblies are in multiples and not very big so lots of effort, not much to see. The Revell pictures should give you some idea.

Hi Haddock,
It's great to have you back posting, we've missed you.
Now this build looks like it is going to be spectacular, even by Haddock standards.
I think you're only teasing us with the Revell box shots, you little d....l, you!
Cheers,
Bigkev

Now then. Looks like everyone has been busy. Well so have I, it's just that a lot of effort doesn't produce much to look at due to the amount of brass involved.
Here's some shots of some of the progress to date, more to come.

Main 16" guns.
Secondary 5" guns.
Harpoon missiles.
Mk 37 directors.
Tomahawk missiles, 2 lots ready to launch.
Mk 38 directors.
Refuelling tower.
Ships boat davits.
Main radar platform.
Breakwater.
As Roger says, toodle-pip for now.
Haddock.

Bit more brass.

Some form of antenna.
Couple of radar scanners.

This lot mounts on the main radar platform.

I am always impressed in how you get the etch brass to do as it should -- I use the best naughty nautical language but mine still has a mind of its own.
