I was interested to read this story and did a little research. Seemingly a body was found in the desert close to the spot where the P.40 crash-landing during the war. The wreckage of the RAF Kittyhawk was found perfectly preserved in early 2012 but later that same year, some seventy years after the accident, pilot Dennis Copping's remains were recovered nearby.

Bones and some remains of clothing were located on some rocks along with a piece of parachute which may have served as a shade from the relentless sun, about three miles from where the plane landed in the Sahara desert in 1942. Among the remains, a keychain fob with the number 61 on it was found along with a metal button dated 1939.

This lost and forgotten World War II fighter is a rare survivor and a sad memorial to its doomed pilot, 24-year-old Flt Sgt Dennis Copping who was forced to crash-land here in June 1942. Taking in the featureless landscape and his location, he probably realised he stood no chance of survival.
Flt Sgt Dennis Copping was simply flying a damaged P-40 Kittyhawk between two British airfields in Egypt for repairs and maintaince but the aircraft never arrived at its destination; and for 70 years the Kittyhawk’s fate and that of its 24-year-old pilot, remained unsolved.
In May 2012, Polish oil company worker Jakub Perka was on an expedition in Al Wadi al Jadidi, 200 miles from the nearest town when he discovered the remains of Copping’s crash landed P-40 aircraft. The plane has remained relatively intact but the reasons for the crash are less clear. We know the plane was already damaged (by gunfire in combat) so there is no sure way of knowing if evidence of gunfire is from that time or the cause of the plane’s demise.

Thanks Flint Pete - A great subject for a diorama methinks....!
