From what I can remember reading about the M1 - they did not fire broadsides only ahead shots.
The sub was lowered in the water with just the gun barrel above water and they used the periscope to line up the barrel on the target and then fired the gun. Only one shot as they had to surface to reload the gun
An interesting procedure.

MSea is a mine of information. Just to add a little to it.
The idea was to "sneak up" on the enemy, partly surface then fire at short range
and submerge quick.
It was never done in anger and probably wouldn't have worked The only thing
these boats were any good at was killing the crew one way or another.
Here's a couple of pics, just for interest. The first is a model in the science museum.

Very interesting Tony. I did'nt know that these types and sizes of guns were mounted on subs. Amazing the ideas people come up with. Was it a british idea?

British idea, probably someone with a degree in town and country planning!!

Might call it complete although a bit of a dirty up wouldn't come amiss.
There are no railings in the kit and I don't have much suitable in the spares box
other than those already added so it will have to stay as it is unless I can unearth
some more.
I think railings around the weather deck would probably be taken down at sea
so I'm happy to leave 'em off.

The docked photo reminds me of Dumbo. It was probably a 'dumb beau' who thought this was a good idea!!!
