Modelling Projects / Battleship Marat 1941
« on: September 04, 2022, 08:18:59 PM »
Just sorting out the next model for Playday/DooDahDay/Serious Modelling Day (take your pick hohoho )
Decided to get this out of the stash, got it at Telford a few years ago, now to decide how to make it.
To keep Haddock happy it should be in water so it could be waterlined and placed in 1937 England for the coronation of King George 6th, or it could be 1939 shelling Finland during the Winter War, or it could be 1940 alongside a jetty with flags and posters for the 70th anniversary of Lenin's birth, or it could be 1941 near Leningrad with some areas flooded to tilt her over and increase the range of her main guns to shell the attacking German troops, or it could be 1942 with her bow blown off and the ship raised to use the center and aft sections to be used in the defense of Leningrad, so lots to choose from. All would keep |Haddock happy but knowing I will get a clip round the ear, she will be made full hull and museum style on a plinth - so why.  First have made her sister ship the Sevastopol in 1917 alongside a jetty, so been there done that. Looking at the shape of the hull after modernization in 1928/32 loved the hammer and sickle bow and funnel so this was a decider, also the chains running from the ford deck down to the plate under the bow, never seen this on another ship. Now must get some more 2 section etch brass rails and brass bar for replacements and some form of head protection for when Haddock sees me - hohoho

Modelling Projects / People's Republic of Yorkshire Airforce
« on: July 25, 2022, 03:22:20 PM »
On Playday 9 I took the 2 Mig 21 models that nobody wanted - could see the worried looks from some of you aircraft modelers - but don't worry.
One of them never got passed the boot of the car - when unloading was talking to one of my neighbour's and passed one of the models on for his son. Now the other one should get you worried, decided to make it into a plane from the "Peoples Republic of Yorkshire" air force, after we have broken away from the rest of England - will not go into politics and say what I think about "B.B the B" or the rest of them, in case I get deleted by Big Kevin - so its just historical, that's all and set in the late 1960 early 1970. Now should it be all silver or camouflage to fit in with the moors colouring - ideas please - yohoho

Modelling Projects / Korean Turtle Ship
« on: June 20, 2022, 06:02:16 PM »
Well another scratch built model from history. Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin used this type of ship when fighting the Japanese about 1592.
At the moment am sorting out the size and have decided to do it in 1/144 scale this will give a model of about 250mm long by 69mm wide. Have just fastened a couple of bits of wood together to make the former for the top cabin, this will be covered with thin strips of wood and plastic, then its onto the lower hull, masts and dragons head.
Have had this model in my head for a while and got the Osprey book to provide more info alongside the images on the internet I have found.

Modelling Projects / Garden Wars MSea v Zak
« on: March 31, 2022, 12:54:57 PM »
As some of you know Zak and I have differing ideas about what should be grown in a garden. Zak ONLY grows things that can be eaten, while I grow NOTHING that can be eaten.
Saw this advert by Dragon Head Models in the Fantasy Figures International magazine and decided that this would be the first  model to make in my new room, it just amused me.  It has just arrived and when my room is back in working order will make a start. I don't even have a paint brush or paint at the moment.

Modelling Projects / First Jobs in the New Room
« on: March 27, 2022, 03:19:14 PM »
Well all the furniture is now in the room - have decided to invest in a new work bench, so will sort that out next week. At the moment an using the old bench to do the first jobs.
That is replacing the elephants ear, fastening the door back on the vending machine and fastening down the figures who have decide to go to sleep - all damaged when packing up and in storage.
Just to keep you happy Zak have spoken to Jamie from Dragon Head Models and my order will be shipped on Monday, that is the model of you and me - bet you can't wait - hohoho

Another 3D printed model from Wayne - started at playday 5 and spent a lot of time smoothing some of the panels, the building has a coat of filler/glue and has been marked out as medieval stone walls, next job is to remove some between the stone blocks and then add colour. Then its back to do some more on the Russian cruiser Varyag, honest Haddock !!!!

Got this from Wayne at the last club meeting on Wednesday night , thanks Wayne.
Gave it a coat of primer and then started on the minions left hand side to remove some of the lines.  have given it another coat of primer and will look to see if it needs more cleaning up when dry.
Now is it Wayne or Frankenstein - will leave that up to the rest of you cruel people - hohohhoho

Modelling Projects / Hue 1968
« on: October 17, 2021, 03:18:56 PM »
Next model started for "Playday 4"  Got the Mark Bowden book about the battle for Hue during the Vietnam War, this got me thinking about the model I was going to do a while ago after seeing the drawing about street fighting in Hue in the Campaign series No 4 by James R Arnold.
So it was out with the book and and up in the stash to find the 2 sets of figures that could be used in the model.  Decided to do the section in the back garden with the ARVN troops blasting through a wall, so will now go and make a base and walls from MDF.

General Discussion / Material Test
« on: October 17, 2021, 10:35:23 AM »
Before you all say what a "cheap skate" I am - I have purchased a silicon mold and sent for some acrylic resin.
BUT was reading on the internet about using 50/50% mix of plastercine and milliput to make things in molds. So decided to try 50/50% mix of blue tack and household filler - first one was a blob of blue tack and tried to mix with the filler. Second one chopped up the blue tack and then mixed this with the filler - will let it dry for an hour or so and see what it looks like. At the moment don't think it will do well in the mold but if it works could make some larger blocks for fancy walls that I need in the next model instead of drilling, filling out of sheet acrylic.

General Discussion / YoHoHo Pirates Day 2021
« on: September 19, 2021, 11:04:07 AM »
19th Sept 2021 and its "Pirates Day" - no work on models as back is giving me trouble again, so its drink rum and watch the banana grow.
Before you ask YES the photos are taken today - the banana doesn't know its nearly winter in Yorkshire and is growing well and producing fruit.
I lied Zak when I said I DO NOT grow anything in my garden you can eat - well even if it grows larger fruit they are not edible, full of small black seeds from what I have been told.  So enjoy today whatever you are doing YoHoHo
