Modelling Projects / Dome Zero RL
« on: September 14, 2023, 05:11:52 PM »
Here we go with another shiny one. This time it's the Dome Zero RL 1979 Le Mans entry It was one of two cars the team entered neither of which finished. I'm modelling car number 6 that had it's first breakdown 7 minutes into the race. After pitting for repairs it soldiered on until fuel feed problems stopped it on the Mulsanne straight and it officially retired at 7 pm, 5 hours into the 24 hour race.

Another weekend of English summer in prospect I've settled into my warm workshop and decided to tackle this one.

Modelling Projects / Krupp Sturmpanzer A7V
« on: December 23, 2022, 04:09:51 PM »
Started this one a wee while ago so the initial posts are a catch up. The A7V Tauro kit looked to be an Everest sized challenge and far to daunting so when the superb Meng kit appeared this project kicked off.

Modelling Projects / A right royal Chipmunk
« on: November 23, 2021, 05:19:30 PM »
Much and all as I'm enjoying the Proctor III build there is quite a bit of down time waiting for filler to dry out. To fill in the down time I've settled on the new Airfix Chipmunk as a straight forward build which it is proving to be so far. I'm planning to finish it as one of the two used by the Royal Flight training Prince Philip to fly in late 1952.

Modelling Projects / Here we go again.

The Dora Wings Percival Proctor is my next build after the delightful Hasegawa A6M3s. It is proving to be nearer the challenging end of the spectrum  the the Zeros mainly due the vagaries of the instructions colour schemes, both of which only share a passing resemblance to reality.

Anyway here's the fuselage buttoned up and drying off while I attempt the cockpit canopy assembly.

Modelling Projects / An A6M3 type 22 'Zero'
« on: January 30, 2021, 10:14:08 PM »
I've decided the time has come for something fresh that should be a straight forward build. The box, severely crushed by Amazon's 'careful' packaging and handling lowered the tone of my stash. Therefore if I build the kit the offending box can be recycled, restoring order to the stash.

Another shiny model underway. This time it's the Revell 1:24 scale kit of the BMW Sauber F1 car as raced in the 2006 season.

Modelling Projects / And now for a shiny model

Been busy today with the airbrush. Very pleased with the result so far. I may change my mind when the euphoria of lacquer fumes wears off. We shall see.

Modelling Projects / Keith Lawrence
« on: May 13, 2020, 03:41:32 PM »
The second model for my Keith Lawrence themed build is a Spitfire Ia that he flew while with 234 squadron. Once again the Airfix 48th kit. Fuselage closed up with the only additions to the kit being seat belts and a metal seat as it was one of the very early Mk ia Spitfires.

Modelling Projects / The dawn of a new age.
« on: April 27, 2020, 05:16:04 PM »
Over the years I've been fascinated by some of the research aircraft particularly early jets. Spying this Valom kit at Telford ignited yet another build theme for me. Here's the first of what could be a long line but in reality will probably only amount to a very few pioneering aircraft.

Two Caproni Campini N.1's were built however only one has survived and is now displayed at the Italian Air Force Museum at Vigna di Valle, near Rome.

The Valom kit is a mixed bag being dimensionally accurate with fine surface detail however the cockpits are woeful. The etched instrument panels share only a vaguely shape to the fuselage contours, the joystick control wheels are massive and crudely moulded. There is no way this model will be finished with open cockpits.

This afternoon I sprayed it with Vallejo Metal Color over their black surface primer and am pleased with the result.

Modelling Projects / Spitfire Mk IIa
« on: April 24, 2020, 01:32:27 PM »
Just begun one of the new tool Airfix Spitfire Mk I/Ia/IIa kits. It's all sweetness and light so far with options to build virtually any early Spitfire Mk.

Modelling Projects / Major Keith Caldwell
« on: March 27, 2018, 06:04:54 PM »
This is the SE5a D6864 Keith Caldwell flew for a time in September 1918 and is another project progressing at my usual glacial rate. Due to the hasty development of the SE5 there were a myriad of significant changes during its initial squadron deployment. It has taken time to research the most likely configuration of D6864. Fortunately the Eduard kit caters for all the major variations once I worked out what was needed. After just on a month I have declared the cockpit area finished as far as I'm prepared to go with it and am now planning out the rigging and painting program before assembling the fuselage, wings and undercarriage.

General Discussion / Looking for xtradecal sheet X72190
« on: March 21, 2018, 09:11:39 PM »
Now then people, I'm looking for some 72nd scale Tiger Moth decals. The ones I want are for NZ882/A1 of 3 EFTS based at Harwood, New Zealand 1940. These decals are part of Xtradecal X72190 covering a number of RAF, RAAF, RSAF, RNZAF and Rhodesian Air Force Tiger Moths in the early years of the war.

Thank you in anticipation, Francis

Modelling Projects / My first model
« on: January 27, 2017, 09:41:29 PM »
At last after more than a year out I have started a model in my new workshop. I have been surprised, or maybe not, how my skills have diminished after the extended time out. The model is an Italian Autoblinda AB41 one of Italys more useful vehicles that made a name for itself in North Africa. So far the running gear and hull have gone together with no bother or fit problems.
