Title: USMC MV22B Osprey
Post by: chriswil42 on April 16, 2020, 02:07:36 PM
Here is the Revell kit almost complete. It went together very nicely. As I got to the current stage I realised there were errors (excluding the ones in the instruction sheets). It has taken me three attempts at the canopy masking. I realised the canopy was from the prototype Osprey. Maybe Revell used the same moulds as the original Italeri kit. Ho hum...
Other small errors include the glazing in the nose as well as the rwr detectors on the nose and rear of the aircraft missing. The aerials on the roof have been corrected. Just getting around to the fuselage strakes behind the cockpit now...

It wouldn't be modelling if there wasn't a challenge somewhere.

Just think what I had to do to that Fred Flintstone bomber that Neil gave me.

Revell seem to release kits with 'in operation' markings only for us to discover they're based on prototypes. I completed their 2007 release of the single seat Eurofighter and the panel lines didn't match the instructions which made decalling fun. If @8 hours is fun!! They also miss out items such as sensors etc. which aren't on the prototype but are on production a/c. The plus side is it turns from kit builders into modellers.

Does that mean I'm getting to be a modeller then?
No comments Martin!

What scheme are you going to finish it in Chris?

PS: I WAS going to ask the same question about Martin's Zombie Shark, but I see it's in 'decomposed reds and blues'!

It will be as per the Revell kit. USMC vmm-264 with the corrections I outlined earlier. Almost there: be ready for primer this weekend.

Just checked the Hasegawa kit I have in the stash and that looks pretty good. All the deficiencies of the Revell kit do not appear to exist in the Hasegawa kit. I'll look forward to doi g that one.

Hi Chris,
Another Osprey?
We are really getting spoilt by you, two of these beasts in short succession.
Love it, look forward to the Hasegawa version

Hi Kevin,
the next Osprey will not be soon. There are one or two other helos I want to do first or may be even a Harrier.

Stop building helicopters Chris, you're starting to make me want to do one too when I've already got too many part done projects on the go.  Must speed myself up a bit eh?  You're doing a good job of that too.

Two Ospreys just flew over Beverley heading south.

From memory I have an MH-6 Little Bird, a Cobra gunship and a Mil 28 Havoc.  I think they're Italeri and Revell but can't remember which is which.  The stash is currently a bit less accessible since I moved stuff about to work from home but I'm off for the rest of the week so hope to have a sort out - I'll confirm if I've led you astray :-)

Very impressed Wizz so you are now moving into helicopters / ships / what else ??????
As long as you enjoy what you are making that's all that maters.

Let's not get to far ahead of ourselves Chris  ;D I need to finish this Lavochkin first and I've been away from the bench for a week (don't how it got be a week as it only seems a couple of days) BUT I do have another part finished project which I fancy tackling in parallel.  I don't know exactly which one yet though as I have loads to pick from.  Maybe the one which is nearest completion so I can feel a bigger sense of achievement, so that would be my 1/72 Revell Me 262.

There's your answer Chris, above.  Thanks for helping me decide and please excuse the waffle above!

Out of curiosity, all these Ospreys you see flying about, how many are in operation?  I was under the mistaken impression they were an aircraft of days gone by but obviously they're not.

There are quite a lot of Ospreys now. Generally just being used by the USMC or the USAF. The first prototypes first flew in the 1970s but they are still very much a current aircraft. They must have been operational for the last 15 years or so.
The ones I saw may have been heading back to Mildenhall.

Actually Dave, I was wrong, it first flew in the 1980s.

I often get a bit scared when I realise how much time has passed since a certain event - only today I was chatting so someone and we mentioned 20 years ago.  When I worked out when that was, it was only the year 2000!!!

I remember buying Airfix's Tornado MRCA when that first came out when I was still at school and it's not long been taken out of service so the shelf life of today's post war aircraft is actually quite considerable.

Yes I remember being taken to one of my first airshows at Leconfield, 1973 I think and the programme showed some of the first artists drawings of the MRCA.
A long time ago.

Hi Chris,
Keep the build going on here.
Perhaps the 'public of Hornsea' may come across the build and realise these machines are real.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Now painted in three shades of grey. A photo wouldn't do it justice. I'll wait till it's finished.

Here is the Revell Osprey just finished. Painting was all of 3 shades of grey - a bit difficult to see on the photo.  Not a bad build in the end just  the deficiences as pointed out earlier. The decals went on ok - used microsol to bed them down.  Interestingly the decal sheet included the canopy transoms which appear to be what it should be for the production model. I didn't use these. I'd done the painting before I looked at the decal sheet.

Hi Chris,
A very nice looking model.
Just watched a video on 'You Tube' with one flying low down a valley.
Seeing that inspires you, as probably something similar did to you.
An awe inspiring machine/aircraft.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Thanks for comments chaps - much appreciated.
Yes it's a geat and strange looking aircraft. It is amazing to see it fly in real life. I saw one fly at Farnborough about 10 years ago.
I now have some of the Hasegawa models to do. They look much more accurate than the Revell kit.

Looking at the amount of excellent helicopters you have made Chris - Haddock is "Admiral Haddock" because he has his own navy -- so what title will you have as chief of the RAF ?????????
Waiting in anticipation for THIS answer - hohoho
