Title: Zvezda 1/350 scale Russian Cruiser Varyag
Post by: MSea on November 05, 2019, 04:14:30 PM
Next project is the Russian Protected Cruiser Varyag - she was commissioned in 1901 at the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia.
This is the Zvezda model with Eduard etch brass set.  When built she will be placed in the Suez Canal on her way to Port Arthur in the far east.
The final fate of the ship was, she was sunk at the Battle of Chemulpo Bay - raised by the Japanese and commissioned into the Japanese navy as the "Soya" - returned to the Russians in 1916 during World War One . She returned to Russia but was in such a bad condition she was sent to Birkenhead for repairs. Overtaken by the Russian Revolution and left to rot, sold for scrap in 1920 and went aground on coast of  Scotland  while on tow and scrapped in situ until 1925.

Two parts of the hull fastened together and a dry run with the three sections of the deck.
Now to mark the hull and "hack off" the lower section to waterline the hull.

Hull now waterlined.
Last photo shows the zigzag ladders removed on the port side and remaining on the stardboard side - both will be replaced by etch brass

green anti-fouling paint added to the hull. The 3 sections of the main deck have had the base coat , now to start picking out individual planks.

Why not just give it a "sludge" wash and wipe it off.
Haddock.

Right hand section shows the individual planks picked out with different colours.
Then a dry brushing of the base coat over the top on the right hand section, to calm down the overall colour.

The stern superstructure showing the plastic part and the brass replacement - now to pick out the individual planks on the new brass deck and then cut off the solid surround on the plastic part that will be replaced with the brass rails.

Hi Msea,
Looking very good, and using a 'Haddock Moment', see the club and website has its uses.
Now you just have to show 'Haddock' that you are the next 'Master' in the dark side of modelling.
No pressure then....!
Cheers,
Bigkev

I take it this is a technique rather than part of the kit build?  Be interesting to see biplane builders use this too  ;D

Hi Haddock,
Don't biplanes have two wings?
Normally each wing is moulded in one piece, does that count as two levels of plastic,
Just a thought...

Funnels now have all detail removed and holes for the wires drilled. Coat of paint given and now seen in the photo they need a lot of sorting out along the demarcation line yellow/black  -- or Haddock will be chastising me for sloppy work.
Don't you just hate photos that show every blemish and mistake -- oh well just remember is a hobby and only for FUN.

Biplane builders drill blind holes in the underside of the top wing and completely through the bottom wing.
Glue in the top, pass through the bottom, stretch and glue! I know, one of them told me!!!

Just got off the phone with Haddock, and to prove I was telling the truth about next model to be worked on here is the photo ( Varyag like a lot of my models finished and under construction have been boxed and put in the garage while I have some new furniture in my room - that was to be a quick job but covid 19 has got in he way )
So am now re-reading the instruction sheets and finishing a couple of bits and bobs and then back on with the Varyag, that will keep Haddock happy and as we all know a Happy Haddock makes everybody happy.

Work done on the ships vents.
Decided to place the ship on a wood base that I had made a long time ago for another model and have it on a section of water with arab Dhows ( or to keep Kevin happy Doohs) around her.  Have added some felt feet to the wood and will give it a rub down and then a coat of varnish - then its time to decide if I will grind out a thin section of wood to put the water in or have it standing proud of the wood - decisions decisions decisions  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Hi Red  the paste is modeling paste by pebeo, got it from the Hobby Store in Hull a few years ago at reduced price - as you would expect - hohoho.
When the ship is finished and embedded in the final layer of paste will colour it and then use some gel to give it a final finish, this dries clear and gives a depth and shine  to the water.

One of the 2 guns on the ships alongside the wheelhouse.
The triangular plastic base will be cut off and the barrel added to the etch brass base - would anybody even know ???? Haddock would and he  take me to task, so onward with the etch brass.

Sorry Andy but its back to the drawing board for the Dhow.
Decided that as it was a gift from Haddock, I had better do it right and rig it, instead of just gluing the paper sail to the resin mast.
Will have to replace the mast with brass rod and then use the original resin mast as the sails top bar, even if I was extra specially careful with the rigging it would break the weak resin mast - and you all know I don't tend to be extra careful at the best of times.

Boat walkways have now been started first 2 photos show the plastic part and the solid sides of the walkway. The etch brass has the correct rails to add to the plastic and the last photo shows the solid sides removed - next job is to remove some of the plastic cross bars which will also be replaced with etch brass ( get ready for the nautical language)
Now who will even notice this improvement - yes of cause Haddock, so on with the brass replacements till the backs  tells me to stop.

Work on the steam cutters - the photo is from the Super Drawings in 3D by Stefan Draminski.
The 2 plastic sections have been fastened together and when cleaned up will have the funnel replaced with brass tube and other very very very small brass bits. So listen for the naughty nautical language - and sorry Haddock for the low quality of the brass work.

Don't try and rush to finish a bit before you have tea.
The first photo shows the small walkway at 90 degrees to the large walkway and the second photo shows the last one I did before being called for food - yes it had not fully dried and has moved to fasten itself onto the side of the  walkway.  So its out with the debonder when I feel like messing about and am in a calm frame of mind.

Try the Trumpeter USS England, a small destroyer with some brass included but non for the main deck.
You would have to get that from say Atlantic models as generic railings.

Now sit down Haddock and take deep breaths - yes I am back on the Varyag - yes its been 3 months BEFORE somebody reminds me.
Remember the small section of brass etch rail that turned 90 degrees before setting hard - well its been removed. After talking with the experts ( well the committee members at the last meeting) decided not to use de-bonder but to cut it off and replace with other brass. As I was cutting, it pinged off and i have now spent a happy 20mins fighting the carpet monster to get it back. This time fastened it in place with tacky wax and then superglued it- hope there is not a reaction between the 2 glues , time will tell.

Yes Haddock they have just flown past my window as well - think it will be a while to get this finished, the brass davits etc are very slow work, but as long as I am enjoying the making its OK with me.
I have never been bothered about having finished models to show people, its the actual making of the model I enjoy. That could be why I flit from model to model and put them down when the FUN/ENJOYMENT is not at full level.  BEFORE anybody take me to task for my comments - just remember its a hobby and not life or death ( that's football - hohohho)

New colour of sea in place, its just drying at the moment and the colour will be the pale grey/blue when it is all dry.
If the 1984 "colour police" are happy, then will give it a coat of translucent gel when fully dry

Some highlights and lowlights added to the sea, when dry will look and see how they have  blended in and maybe put a colour wash over the top to blend them some more, if needed.

The carpet monster has won - the small section of etch brass that forms one of the cages for the lifebelt at the stern has had to be remade, will clean it up and then paint it see how it looks - if OK will add to the model , if not try and make another improve one
