Title: Zvezda 1/72 SS-25 Sickle
Post by: bridlufc on February 01, 2018, 01:55:56 PM
This is the Zvezda 1/72 SS-25 Sickle ballistic missile. I am really enjoying this build, a real mixture of media, injection moulded plastic, resin and photo etch. One to test the skills somewhat.
This mobile ICBM is mounted on a 7 axle heavy truck ,MAZ-7917, capable of moving through any off-road terrain and attaining a speed up to 60 km/he on highways. The missile can be readied to launch within 2 mins after the order is received. The 3 stage rocket can deliver a nuclear warhead of 0.55mt up to a range of 10,000km and has a complex anti-missile defense system.

Welcome to the rocket group.

Thank you Zak!! I've had this kit for a while, I had to source the after-market photo etch from the Far East. The resin after-market rocket set was a bit trickier to find, a Dutch company by the name of 'LVM Studios' make the resin kit but they were a bit pricey, I located a set in Russia that were cheaper.
There will be two 'Sickles' depicted, one in transportation mode and one in launch mode.

We could form a special interest group on rockets and missiles.

I probably won't stop there, there are a few more missile launchers that have caught my eye!!

The LVM Studios resin and photo--etch add on.  The kit launch tube has to be shortened in length by a third to accommodate the resin kit in order to show the missile in launch mode.

I think you are "OFF YOUR ROCKET"  --- can I join if I promise to be good and quiet ??????

The launch tube has been cut to size and the resin parts have been trimmed to fit. The offcut from the launch tube is at the back and will be discarded. The resin parts have been well cast, no holes or cracks to fill, they might need a bit of filler around the joints but overall they look the part. All there is for the missile is the tip on the right hand side.

And yes, I wore a mask before working with the resin!!

I am now in the process of attaching the fiddly photo etch parts, they stick to everything but where they are intended and no doubt most of them will be lost to the carpet monster when handling and then  I have to start painting the thing!!! Happy days?

Thanks Zak. Well thats certainly a kick up the proverbial to get me motivated again.  I will endeavour to resume modelling asap,  not all of us are blessed with a production line like yours. Just wait till I retire!!

Had so much fun tonight with the miniscule photo etch parts, gluing them on, knocking them off, looking for them, finding some, gluing them on etc, etc, I'm sure you catch my drift. Patience, I am told, is a virtue. I love this modelling lark.

After adding the photo etch parts, majority of which are grab handles or eyelets presumably for lifting, I can't help feeling the holes in the eyelets will be filled with primer when I spray, completely losing the detail, but we shall see.

I used Alclad 2 grey primer and micro-filler as the primer, the base coat will be Vallejo Model Colour pink so some of you will have an inkling of what the main colour will be!

There are several  photo references for colour schemes for the Sickle, from camouflage to Russian green and the one I am building which is Russian green for the vehicle and yellow for the launch tube. I am using Humbrol acrylic yellow no 65. Launch tube is pictured after 1st coat.

It's an aircraft paint stand that I picked up at Bolton, find them on ebmahobby.co.uk.  As you can see it can be used for other subjects as well innovations scales. It has varying size legs that can be combined depending on what you are working on.

Hi Bridlufc,
I'd forgotten you were building a SS-25 Sickle. I have one too, ready to start, but I was debating whether to have it in launching position or in transport mode.
You have made my mind up for me, transport mode it is.
Would like to see yours with missile exposed when finished, I bet that will look really cool.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Thanks Bigkev, this kit is a relatively straight forward one to build, just make sure you align the wheels for transport as they will need to sit on the deck so to speak. With mine being in launch mode there is a little bit of leeway as it is jacked up for launch mode.

I don't think Humbrol acrylic paint takes very well with Vallejo paint, it's not covering very well and there are a few paint runs which will require sanding down. It will be all the more awkward as there is quite a bit of photo etch which I run the risk of knocking off when sanding, happy days.

I now have a Revell 1/72 SS-25 Sickle on the stocks, no etched brass for me, just straight from the box I think.
I quite fancy the yellow livery too.

It was the box art that caught my eye first and then when I got the after market stuff the yellow in the build guide as opposed to the camouflage really stood out. I quite like the SS 26 Stone as well, but that's for anther time. There seem to be a few kits coming out in this range that really complement each other, but where do you stop?!!

I used Humbrol Acrylic gloss bright yellow, 69, and Vallejo thinners.
It seemed to work well.
