Title: Orel
Post by: MSea on December 31, 2017, 02:28:26 PM
I built the Knaz Suverov see first photo many years ago BH ( Before Haddock showed me how to make ship models) and she is a sister ship of the Orel, all in the Borodino Class of Russian battleships.
I decided to make the Orel taking on coal but nobody seems to make a collier in 1/350 scale -- so i will make it from scratch.
Being away for 2 weeks took some bits and bobs to make a start on the collier. Second photo is the bridge parts and the enginroom top ( could not take superglue with me) so just made the parts and have fastened them together now i am home.
The main deck and three islands have now been fastened together ( the sharp eyed amongst you will find the that I had run out of 5mm solid bar and had to use 5mm tube and fill in the holes. )
Made some vents and pulley blocks (If Wizzel wants to find out how to make the small pulleys I will show some step by step photos)

Yes Haddock she has put up with me for 46 years, puts you lot to shame ---hohoho
Pulley blocks fastened to wire and added to the masts.
The  hole for the holds ( try saying that 10 times after a few drinks) cut into the main deck and hatch combings added.  Next job make the lower hull with the space to see into the holds and then skin the outside of the ship.

Very nice, I just love a bit of scratch building.
Title: Re: Orel
Post by: MSea on January 04, 2018, 05:17:11 PM
Lower hull made from balsa and fitted, then a skin of thin plastic added to both sides. A bit of filler added -- letting it dry and than smooth down to combine the skin and cut away hull at the aft end.
Next job fasten all the masts and booms together and then string them all in the correct order - that's the plan anyway.

Some more work done on the ship and the masts.
Title: Re: Orel
Post by: MSea on January 11, 2018, 10:50:59 AM
Rails on the ships side changed. As I said last night at the meeting the rails I have fitted to the ships side are very thick and over size, they have been replaced with some from Peter Hall and I think look much better.
If you see the rails on the left are the new ones and the old rail is still,at the moment, on the right side of the photo. The other main problem is the old rail only fastens at the single points of the stanchions and did not have a full bar running along the deck, so they ping off if you give them a dirty look, let alone touch them.

Thank you Kevin for the comments -- but as you know I am just trying to catch up with you lot.
Just returned yesterday from 5 days in London and have spent 2 full  days in Greenwich Maritime Museum ( not as an old exhibit before you ask) have found some good information about colliers and will incorporate this into the next collier model.

The main decks of the "Orel" painted and some individual planks picked out in different colours. Then some of the bits and bobs on the deck painted in grey.

The 4 accommodation blocks on the main deck now in place.
Have done a dry fit with the next 2 decks above and found the ships sides are well splayed out -- so will have to use gentle persuasion to bring them into shape - listen for the crack, you should be able to hear it as far as Brid.
Title: Re: Orel

The ford section of deck added - no cracks AT THE MOMENT, we shall see how it goes !!!!

Ford deck seems OK - small gap so added a filler of acrylic.
Aft deck added with again a large amount of pressure to get it into line.

The cast on ladders up the side of the hull removed and etch brass replaced them. The ladders up the front of the turret was one of the ziggurat solid type, so removed and replaced with brass.

ALL your comments are like little nuggets of gold  -- I like this one. It is easy to say I can't do it ,its difficult, its so small, it will look like 5$%£ -.  BUT if you just get stuck in, each time will be easier.

The model has no net shelf so one made from 0.5mm acrylic.
After it is solid, will make it a little bit smaller and add some net and the operating bars and wires.

First shot is some tutu net from Boyes - coloured and then rolled up. The second shot is this added to the net shelf.

Just found a good photo of a Japanese sailor standing guide on the Orel in one of my books. It shows the main turrets have a single row of rails round the turret top with a gap near the observation hoods.

Some of the 11pdr guns had the barrels broken off, so had to replace with brass tube.  Now replacing all of the other 11pdr gun barrels, also decided that I should have replaced the 75mm barrels but heho its only a model and for fun ( also it would be a problem to remove them from the model ) so will put a black dot on the barrel ends.

No fly's on MSea just footprints.
Accommodation blocks fitted - please note all windows/portholes drilled and cleaned up to shape with a scalpel -- and yes I still have all fingers and thumbs in working order.  Next 3 decks primed ready to fit and cover up all the work on the accommodation blocks - but heho its only for FUN.
Title: Re: Orel
Post by: MSea on August 29, 2018, 08:32:02 PM
The top deck has several support pillars to give it strength -- I find that when fitting this they always splay out and become a pain in the £"$.
So I don't bother fitting them, but drill out the holes and fit a section of brass bar from the top when the deck has been fitted into place. The bar in the photo is just to show how they are fitted, the correct ones will be cut to length before fitting.

Title: Re: Orel
Post by: MSea on May 09, 2019, 04:17:36 PM
Decided it would be easier to make a flat section of card and add cat litter for the coal and also the workmen in the hold.
When it is all finished it will be added to the bottom of the hull - rather than try to add all this stuff  through the open hatch - that's the plan at the moment so we shall see how it goes.
Title: Re: Orel
Post by: MSea on May 10, 2019, 06:01:42 AM
Coal added to the hold and painted - just the men to add now.

Figures on the right have been made as if they are in the hold moving coal about, before somebody says they would be totally covered in coal dust and you would not see them - its only a model and for FUN.

Coat of plaster of paris on the base to represent the sea around Cam Ranh Bay - from the colour in the bottle behind the base you can see it has come out a little lighter than the colour mixed - forgot to take into account the white powder and white pva mixed in with the paint. I have been called a lot worse in lots and lots of different languages in my time - so "paint swab" will do OK for me, thanks Chris - yohoho

Well 10 to 15 mins of work fastening the coal ship down on the base and adding some paste to fill between the ships hull and the water and that's me finished for the day - I hate covid

Coming along nicely. The sea looks like that on the Danish coast on Saturday as Le Tour went along. Nice.

Some more work done on the aft fighting section.
The boat davits are just bent bits of plastic so will replace some with a set of etch brass from North Star Models - that will keep Haddock happy, BUT must remember to shut the window to keep the naughty nautical language inside the room when trying to bend them into shape - yohoho

Keep this up and you'll be giving Haddock a run for his money!! Either that or he'll say 'I taught you well young Skywalker'.

NO Chris - I can see all the problems with this one - and it was started a long while ago, Haddock has improved my skills/tricks/methods since then.
I just look at this one as , its finished soon  and looks OK'ish and fills another space in the cabinet.

Brain still mush from the covid ( before you say it Zak, yes I know my brain was mush before I got covid - yohoho) Looked at the collier fatened down and ready to pass on bags of coal and noticed it still had the 2 anchors fixed to the hull. So broke one off and drilled out the holes to fix the chain from the sea to the ship.  One less thing for Haddock to pull me up on and point out my mistakes - hohohohoho

Ford anchors and winch fitted.
The instructions show the winch fitted on the sloping section of deck that also has the anchors fastened to it. My research, that is looking at photos of the ship, not other plastic models of the Orel show the winch is fitted on the main deck behind the railings, so am going with the photo evidence - nit pickers do your worst.

More colour on the ships boats.
Also decided that its toooooo hot to contemplate revenge on the 2 Chris's so you can both sleep easy - or as it was said in the Godfather film "he sleeps with the fishes"

Thanks - I am happy with the way it has turned out - but waiting to get the comments from Haddock ( rigging nor correct, not enough stays on the funnel, coal sacks not hanging correct but heyho it has kept me quiet for a while hohohoh)

Looks great, the rigging is a lot better than my attempts. With the size of those sacks I wouldn't want to be a Coalman on that round.

Last of the etch brass rails added and another coat of sea put in to make the ship look like its in the water not floating above it. Colour to add to the sea and the Orels anchor chain fitted.
