Title: REVELL USS NEW JERSY IN 1:350
Post by: Haddock on December 21, 2017, 11:37:18 AM
Got this from Croppers with Xmas and birthday vouchers. Not a cheap kit. Started it before Telford
The kit contains wood decks, lots of turned brass parts and two large frets, one brass, the other is nickel, plus of course, the plastic.
You could build the ship without using any of the extras but it would be horrible. The moulds are to be diplomatic, not to modern standards. Plus there are one or two errors in the instructions that could catch you with your pants down.
You can probably see lots of filler and shims with more to come. the moulds are quite tired, plenty of flash, slippage and mismatches. Disappointing so far.
These are the only pics I've taken to date, so lots more to come.

I've been busy, honest. It's just that with the horrible plastic and the amount of etched brass, a lot of effort doesn't produce much to look at, so to make my life easy, I've posted some shots of the usual Revell pictures of the finished model as shown on the box, except it ain't finished as it ain't painted.
To go a bit further, I've decided to build as many sub-assemblies as I can before sloshing any paint on or till I get fed up.
The brass is numbered from 1 to 355, quite a few of the parts are multiples of the same part No ( there are 10 part No 355). Some of the sub-assemblies are in multiples and not very big so lots of effort, not much to see. The Revell pictures should give you some idea.

Hi Haddock,
It's great to have you back posting, we've missed you.
Now this build looks like it is going to be spectacular, even by Haddock standards.
I think you're only teasing us with the Revell box shots, you little d....l, you!
Cheers,
Bigkev

Now then. Looks like everyone has been busy. Well so have I, it's just that a lot of effort doesn't produce much to look at due to the amount of brass involved.
Here's some shots of some of the progress to date, more to come.

Main 16" guns.
Secondary 5" guns.
Harpoon missiles.
Mk 37 directors.
Tomahawk missiles, 2 lots ready to launch.
Mk 38 directors.
Refuelling tower.
Ships boat davits.
Main radar platform.
Breakwater.
As Roger says, toodle-pip for now.
Haddock.

Bit more brass.

Some form of antenna.
Couple of radar scanners.

This lot mounts on the main radar platform.

I am always impressed in how you get the etch brass to do as it should -- I use the best naughty nautical language but mine still has a mind of its own.

Hi Haddock,
Another masterpiece in the creation. But this one has caused you more problems than the norm. I can see though that whatever the faults of the mouldings, they cannot compete with Haddock, and are ultimately defeated.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Here's an antenna, then another one, assembled, painted and rigged. Think I should have use finer stuff on the smaller of the two.

Just a couple of shots to show where I am to date. The largest antenna in the previous post fits on top of the bridge-like structure over the foredeck in the first shot, the smaller one, atop the square-ish deckhouse behind the main guns in the second shot.
Haddock
Still an awful long way to go. The devil is in the detail.

Another little sub-assembly. The walkway perched in space needed a serious amount of "re-engineering" to get it to fit. This is where all the time goes.

Cable reels, large and small. large drum is 3mm dia, small drum is 1.6mm dia, supported on 0.5mm and 0.3mm dia spindles respectively. The "tube" is fabricated from suitable sizes of Albion Alloys brass tube, fixed together with Loctite then cut to the right length. Job jobbed. Lot of effort for such small parts.

At the risk of being boring, here's the production line.

1) parts.

2)rough assembly.

3) nipped up and glued.

4) spindles trimmed to length.

Job jobbed.

Here's part of the bridge. Without the brass, the windows would be represented by a transfer, if the plastic was anything to go by they would look horrible. I think this is an improvement, one or two gaps to fill though.

Now then. Due to not feeling all that bright since the end of Feb, progress has been very slow, in fact non existent for about three weeks. Thought I'd better post something before I get chucked out of the club.
           Here's progress to date.
Main superstructure.
For'ard funnel and radar platform.
The two fixed together ready for more detail to be fitted.

Superstructure in place.
It's now difficult to take a decent picture, and even more difficult to manipulate the model to work on it. Lots more to do yet.

Hi Haddock,
That is one fine BIG looking model.

Will you be taking the seascape to somebody with a LARGE oven to bake the 'sea' on this one, perhaps 'Jacksons' of Hull in their bread plant?
Cheers,
Bigkev

Last post on this one folks. There's a bit more detail to add, but I may not bother.
See if you can spot the bit of brass that needs some paint sloshing on.

Excellent work as always Haddock - is the bit to be sloshed on, a very small trapezoidal shape with cross bar holding up the round object near the front of the bridge in photo 5321 -- or is that just light reflecting on it ??????

Hi Haddock,
You may have painted it now, but is it pic 5325, and the small cabin/office? to the right of the main turret??
This is a monster of a kit even in 1/350........
When I start my HMS Ark Royal '1941' how will I cope with that, looking at your experiences with a larger project.
Cheers,
Bigkev
