My foray into WW1 seems to have run its course for the present.
My latest project is concerned with Hitler's V weapons, in this case the V2.
As some of you may remember some years ago I build a bunker with a V1 launch ramp and narrow gauge railway attached, I no longer have this. It was sold to a model railway enthusiast some time ago.
It was when I saw that Takom had produced a kit with a V-2 Rocket a Meillerwagen and a Hanomag SS100 in 1/35 scale tractor that I became hooked.
Obviously some research was required and this site is full of information http://www.v2rocket.com/.
Well I started with the Hanomag tractor and then decided to scratch build a Vidalwagen for the transportation of my V2 rocket. I can only find kits in 1/72 for this.
The rockets were stored after delivery by rail and the transported by Vidalwagen, the rocket was then off loaded onto the Meillerwagen and taken to the launch site.
The photos show the progress so far.

Here is the Vidalwagen under construction, I hope to source some suitable wheels at ScaleModelWorld next weekend.
Meanwhile just to tease you here are all the bits laid out for another part of the project, this is all resin, but what can it be?

Glad your back, perhaps it will inspire to get building after a lull in building projects.
This is one mean looking model.
I look forward to seeing this one finished, V weapons always have been of interest to me.
One question how did they move the V-2 from the vidalwagen onto the miellerwagen prior to launch. A crane type designed specifically??
No doubt this will be an impressive build.

That is what the question was about, it is a portable crane.
The photos show the gantry under construction.
It is all resin and assembly is with superglue.
The parts are well formed, but some cleaning up is required.
The instructions leave a lot to the imagination though.

This portable crane was manufactured in 1942 by J. S. Fries & Son of Frankfurt.
It could lift 16 tonnes and was also used for tank maintenance for the removal of turrets and engines.
It had a crew of eight and could be erected from its travelling position in 20 minutes.
It was often towed by a Famo half track equipped with a 6 ton crane (the recovery version).

Here is the rear support tower, I just need to work out where the brakes and the linkages go.
I will be constructing the crane in its working mode rather than its towing mode.

I forgot to mention that the kit was sourced from France through Azimut Models, it took a long time to arrive, but it did eventually.
The 1/35 kit is by DES and is almost all resin.

All parts completed, undercoat and then paint - unsure of what colour to paint it.

After some research and Dunkelgelb will be the paint colour.
I may try some pre-shading to accentuate the crevices.

So while things dry I am making a start on the Takom 1:35 Meillerwagen, this was for the transportation and erection of the V2 onto the launch table. It could also acts as a service gantry for fuelling the rocket with Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

Back to the Vidalwagen and scratch building.
I bought some wheels in Telford, scratch built the springs and tow bar and here it is.
I did learn that Takom will be releasing a kit of the Vidalwagen later this month - typical - as usual.
I could say a lot of rude things but I would only be moderated I suppose.

The replacement wheels are the ones on the Vidalwagen.

In need of a few figures, I am adopting the backwards approach as a trial.
Figures were undercoated in black and then I will apply lots of dry brushed coats getting successively lighter.
The jury is still out.
Here we have a couple of coats so far.
The other ohotos show the base for the diorama, models posed for effect.
I do intend to build another Hanomag but in grey.
Notice the difference in the two pictures - different lighting conditions.

There are no figures in the kit, they are just some that were in the spares box, I think they are tankers.

The build continues, lots of little bits to add, ladders, cables and so on, the build is almost there, now onto painting.
Did I mention that I have two of these.
One will be in transportation mode - together with the Vidalwagen and crane, the other will be in launch mode.
So yes I have two rockets to built as well.
One will be in black and white, I have still to decide on the other paint scheme.

The V2 itself and the firing platform were both straightforward builds.
A little filling will be required on the rocket.

Its all been undercoated and now a coat of dunkelgelb will be applied and then some camouflage.

Life has been getting in the way of modelling.
I have had a disaster with spraying the V2, after masking I am afraid the paint lifted in areas. I tries to rectify this but am most unhappy with the result.
At present the rocket is in a black sealed plastic bag covered in Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner.
I will remove the paint and try again.
Meanwhile, I am making a start on the Opel Blitz T-Stoff Tankwagen. This is the Italeri Opel Blitz truck with resin additions. I purchased the whole thing from Azimut models. They send the resin additions and the bits of the Italeri kit that are needed.
Here are all the bits.
The Opel Blitz Ausf S Kessel-Kw. 3t tanker carried the highly-volatile T-Stoff (85% hydrogen peroxide 560 gallons & 15% water 80 gallons) that, along with permanganate, powered the rockets steam turbo fuel pumps.
There was also the alcohol B-Stoff tanker version, which could carry 770 gallons. The vehicle was equipped with a rear pump, capacity 66 gallons per minute, and a hand pump 21 gallons per minute. Weight loaded 13,000 lb. It would require at least 2 tanker trucks to fill the large alcohol tank on each V2. Three trucks could fill 2 rockets.

Meanwhile, back in the paint shop - well the other corner of the room, I have painted the V2 with dunkelgalb.
We are away for the weekend so I shall leave it until Tuesday before masking and painting further colours.

Especially for Mr Ward, here is a summary of Stoff.
STOFF
A -Stoff – liquid oxygen (teargas was called this in WW1)
B-Stoff – ethanol and water mixture
C-Stoff-
Methanol CH3OH ~57% by Weight
Hydrazine hydrate N2H4 · H2O ~30% by Weight
Water H2O ~13% by Weight
Catalyst 431 K3[Cu(CN)4] potassium-cuprous cyanide coordination complex
F-Stoff – Titanium tetrachloride
K-Stoff- methylchromoformate
M-Stoff- methanol
N-Stoff – chlorine trifluoride
R-Stoff or Tonka: 57% monoxylidene oxide / 43% triethylamine
S-Stoff: 90% nitric acid / 10% sulphuric acid or 96% nitric acid / 4% ferric chloride (The ferric chloride acted as a catalyst.)
T-Stoff- hydrogen peroxide mixture
U-Stoff-dinitrogen tetroxide
X-Stoff-tetranitromethane
Z-Stoff-calcium permanganate / sodium permanganate / water
Now that you are fully Stoffed, its back to modelling. Sorry as an ex-chemistry teacher I still like to spell sulfur as sulphur (or is it my Britishness?)

Thinking about the size of the 2 bases added together -- could this be BIG STOFF ????

The rear fuel tank was a large lump of resin, it had attached to it a large lump of resin that had to be removed with a razor saw and then sanded flat - quite a chore.

Meanwhile, some painting done on the V2 - I am still suffering from the paint lifting, but have decided to persevere anyway.
I am doing the Gezackt pattern camouflage from 1943.

The rocket has been coated in clear before applying the transfers.

As well as this tanker, others were required.
Another alcohol tanker used was the Opel Kfz.385 Flugbetriebstoff Kessel Kraftwagen. This was a 3t self-propelled B-Stoff alcohol tanker used by the V2 rocket troops. Originally built for use by the Luftwaffe, this vehicle would need a towed trailer pump.
This will be built from the Italeri kit – no 6467 – Kfz. 385 Tankwagen, I found this on EBay.
Construction will follow the kit instructions. I may just post a picture when its finished.
Towed Alcohol Bowser
Luftwaffe B-Stoff (alcohol/water mix) towed tanker unit. Photographs show this in use, but only after the war and so I am not sure if I need one or not.
This will have to be scratch built on some Opel Blitz wheels.
Research revealed the following kits, but these may not be the same?
Anyway on with scratch building. The core will be balsa covered in 20 or 20 thou plastic card.

Rather than waste an Opel Blitz truck I sourced some resin wheels on Ebay for this.

While the undercoat cures.
I made a start on the Azimut Oxygen Bowser, this is a resin kit.
A-Stoff Betriebstoffanhanger Liquid Oxygen Bowser
The Betriebstoffanhanger Liquid Oxygen towed bowser was used at the railhead and at the firing sites. It was normally towed by a heavy tractor such as the Hanomag SS-100. The A-Stoff mobile trailer frame was heavily reinforced to withstand the weight of hundreds of gallons of liquid oxygen.
As you can see the detail on the parts is great but quite a lot of cleaning up was required.

Some assembly after cleaning up the parts.
Just remember that this carries liquid oxygen and had to be pretty robust, oxygen is a gas and turns to liquid at -1830C. So they would lose a lot by evaporation and so on. Photos show the supply tubes coated with ice. Sometimes the rockets appear white where the oxygen tanks were located.

While things set, dry, cure I am trying to find out more about the vehicles and equipment used to launch the V2.
I am searching for information about portable pumps and generators.
I think I will end up scratch building these eventually.

Scratch built fuel bowser painted awaiting weathering.
I also added the box onto a chassis from the spares box to make a pump for transferring the fuel into the rocket and meillerwagen.
I am still not sure if this fuel trailer was actually used, it is a Luftwaffe vehicle and as I said earlier the only photos that show it are the ones after the war. I suppose I could model this particular photograph.

The black and white scheme is shown in quite a lot of photos, it was used so that the trajectory of the rocket could be analysed. Tilt, roll, yaw and so on, I guess.

What now, well there is still a generator to scratch built and then the control vehicle for the launch - this is a Trumpeter sd.Kfz. 7 with a resin add on from Azimut, followed by a control/headquarters trailer and then various other vehicles and trailers to carry troops and assist with the launch.
I am going to start with the control vehicle.

Zugkraftwagen 8t - Sonder Kraftfahrzeug – Special Motor vehicle (Sd.Kfz.7/3) half-tracked prime-mover, powered by the Maybach HL62TUK, was converted to control post vehicles for rocket launching units. The rear of the Feuerleitpanzer was mounted with an armoured superstructure to house the guidance and radio equipment and to protect the crew of 3 men from the blast and explosion. The vehicle also sometimes towed the mobile firing platform used to launch the rocket (Abschussplattform).

The track is individual links, 54 or so per side, and each link is composed of three parts.

There were some quite large lumps of resin attached to the parts, these were carefully removed with the small razor saw as shown, yes, I did wear a mask - an improvement I hear you say!

Sticking it all together.
The top is just placed in position.
It has a detailed interior and so all that will need to be added before it is stuck in place.
Test fitting suggests that quite a bit of work will be needed on the chassis to get the control room to fit on it.

There was a lot more to launching a V2 than I first thought. Not just a bloke with a box of matches and fast legs!

Watching some of the launches it looks like all those suggestions would have been a good idea.
Interior painted.
The panels were apparently operated by trained telephonists.
There were still more vehicles required, compressors, generators, ladders, spare part trucks, survey vehicles and so on.

Anyway back to modelling, the top is on the control centre and guess what - you can hardly see all the detail inside.

The bits and pieces are resin parts from an Azimut resin kit. It is a German Command Trailer and as such could have been used during V2 launches.
Here are all the parts and some construction.
Cyril gave me a completed Famo - I have weathered and repainted some of this, it is still a work in progress.
Mittlerer Zugkraftwagen 12t Sd.Kfz.8
Halftracked prime mover of Wehrmacht troops, the Zugkraftwagen 12t heavy traction powered vehicle. The Sd.Kfz.8 was manufactured primarily at the Daimler-Benz factory in Berlin - Marienfeld and the Kruppwerke at Mülhausen, some also at Skodawerke at Pilsen. Manned by a crew of up to 13 and powered by a 185 net horsepower- this machine was used as a support tractor for the V2 troops, although shown in a few photos towing the Meillerwagen.

The command trailer needs weathering and some dry brushing to complete it.
Next it will be this Opel Blitz Maultier from Italeri, but with a cabin on the back for control and so on.
Maultier means mule.
I picked one of these up on EBay, I will have to scratch build the rear cabin.
Opel Blitz Maultier 3t S-type with radiocabin based on the S-Type, with the rear running gear copied from the British Carden-Loyd carrier. Cables inside for connecting the antenna's with the transmitter truck radio installation.

It is amazing what you get done by not watching TV and or sleeping.
This kit is quite nice considering its age, the plastic was a little brittle.

Getting ready for a launch.
Making the wiring and connections from the rocket to the generator and then to the control vehicle.
Some selective compression will be needed to display this as the individual elements could be 300-400 feet apart.
