Title: Airfix B17G
Post by: Roger on June 21, 2017, 03:03:49 PM
So, here we go again.  I thought I would make a start on the repetitive bits while enthusiasm is high (and also to give me time to do some research), so I have painted the props and engine components.  The prop shape was good but they were very thick.  Scraping and sanding each one soon sorted that.  The engines look pretty much like Wright Cyclones.  The detail is slightly flat but the mouldings include push rods and ignition wires - and even the clips between each pair of wires.  Painted up and inside a cowling they look very effective though.
Various shades of AlcladII, Tamiya and Citadel paints used.
Happy modelling,
Roger

Little bit more done. I have also found a suitable colour scheme.  I like the ones in the kit but want to do something a bit different.  I was tempted by the Bassingbourn option though as I used to live there (not while they had B17s, they were replaced by Canberras by then).

Hi Roger,
Patience of a saint, with all those props and engines, detailed and decaled, looks like its going to be a detailed build again.....................surprise, surprise!
Cheers,

Thanks Chaps for the encouragement. I think this one will be mostly straight from the box again, as it seems pretty complete as it is.  But we will see as we go on of course!
Just gluing things together today.  The intercooler intakes on the front of the wing and a couple of tiny joints in the wheel bays needed a little filling.  I used superglue and talc, mixed into a "runny paste" consistency. This was hit with a drop of accelerator, filed smooth, all done in 5 minutes.  The insides of the wing and the wheel bays need a coat of paint tomorrow then they can be closed up.
If this rain keeps up the job will soon be finished!!
Cheers for now,
Roger

I've always like the B17 so I'll be following this closely.  Also useful if the corrugated cardboard stand for the props!  This would be handy for all sorts of little fiddly bits so I'm going to fabricate one too I think!  Far more practical than a blob of "blu tac" - especially if you live in Germany like Kiteman where they have no such thing.  AND I also like the superglue and talc tip for filling.  I've been using Squadron green putty mixed with Revell Liquid poly to an appropriate consistency which can be brushed into the smallest area and it dries very hard.  Not as quick as your method though Roger.

I thought it was time for a quick update on this one.  All is going fine, the fuselage is together and I am working on fitting all of the transparencies.  I am doing this before any sanding or filling to ensure as little dust as possible gets into the fuselage.
Once this is done assembly of the previously completed sections should ensure rapid progress.
Unfortunately I don't have any pretty photos at present due to phone problems - they are in there but I can't get them out at present!  Once this is possible I'll update you again.
Hope you are all busy modelling, it's been pretty quiet on here of late!
Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,
That looks really nice work. Is it mainly as per kit?
I can see a few seat belts added, but is the rest more or less per kit?
Like the various colours throughout, all adding a bit of interest.
Will chat to you at Southwell or Telford about this build.
Keep doing what your doing, it looks really nice so far.
It can only get better...........
Cheers,
Bigkev

Hi BigKev,
There are lots of little details added, the biggest changes are to make it into a pathfinder.  In the pic you can see the radar navigator's position.  After that the rest of the detail on the radar bin itself went in, together with some oxygen bottles, and after joining together the fuselage halves, the gun sights at the front and rear positions. A strap "seat" and collector bags for the top turret, and that's us up to date.
The only "wrong" bit that needed correcting was in the bomb bay.  There is nice open girder work represented in the wing roots, which is probably what you see on an aircraft without wings. However when the wings are fitted, if you look up into the bomb bay there is sheet metal behind the girders (i.e. you can't see into the wings).  I suspect this could be a fuel tank?  Anyway it was a straightforward task to draw around the inside of the hole onto thin plasticard, cut it out and paint it silver, and stick it in before the wings go on.
Liking the look of the model, seems to have a good shape to it, IMHO.
Cheers,
R

Thanks Chaps, more soon.  Hopefully I have only got the detail where it will be seen, the glazing is very clear - we'll have to wait and see!

We are in full colouring in mode now - see pics for current state of play.  Unfortunately I only had enough Alclad 101 Aluminium for a first coat, so progress will now be stalled until after Telford when I can buy some more.  It is only a few days away, and I am away next weekend anyway, so this is not quite the hold up it first seemed.
In the meantime, I have made a start on AZ Models MB5 as a quick straight from the box project.  I'll post a picture when I get a minute.

Toodle pip,
Roger

We are back in business with this one now - Alclad purchased at Telford.  The picture shows the result of three coats, with wet sanding in between to get a nice smooth finish.

Hi Roger,
Coming along nicely. Will there be any coloured fins, tailplanes, wingtips on this model?

Hi Big Kev,

Just some red stripes on the tail and starboard wing. Quite plain really.  If you look closely at the photo above you can just make out where they are masked off.

Looking very silver - I have yet to dip my foot in the Alclad water so to speak, maybe I will bite the bullet at some stage.

Hi Roger,
I'm sure it won't be 'quite plain really'
It looks very good even in its unfinished state.

While polishing I noticed that I had forgotten to open up the little intakes and vents on the cowling.  This is now done (with a No11 blade) without damaging the paintwork.  They should look OK with a bit of dark wash in them.
See below for a quick before and after.

I know you do, but its all the rest - thinner and so on, increases the price rather.

Not sure it shows to well, but following photographs of the plane I'm building, I have painted various panellist different shades of Alclad.

I did this in several goes, so was able to mask, paint, then stick the tape to the cutting mat for reuse.  Some of this tape has already been used 4 times.  I thought this might appeal to certain of our members!

Cheers all

Forgot to say - one of the things I really like about Alclad is the way you can mask over it without any problems, unlike some metal finishes.  Makes the job easy.

Enjoying following this build Roger, I must admit that I will re-use masking tape when I can.

"Fabric" parts painted ad stripes unmasked.

I found reusing the tape was actually quicker too.

Hi Roger,
Looks very good so far.
I use a similar process, but I make 'post-it' type notes from paper and Tamiya tape.
Works just the same as your method, but helps to prevent overspray by being a little larger and therefore the spraying needs to be less accurate, a benefit in my case.
Also I pre-stick the Tamiya tape on the back of my hand or forehead to reduce the 'tackiness' of the tape prior to applying to the subject.
Keep at it R, it looks great so far.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Thanks to all who have commented above for the encouragement.

A quiet weekend as my brother was visiting, but the paintwork is now finished - time to make it shiny with Klear next.

Hope you have all been busy modelling this weekend!

Thanks Bridlufc.

Decals now on and glossed with Klear.  I used Kits World for the codes and serials, sliced and diced to get the correct style of letters for this particular aircraft.  They are thin but easy to use and settled into all of the detail.  I used the kit national markings and stencils.  To be honest I should have used aftermarket national markings as the kit ones are a bit thick, and I have plenty in the spares box, but the kit ones are on now and will do.
Next weathering.  There are some very noticeable oil leaks to replicate, so a bit of experimentation will be required to get this right.
Happy modelling,
Roger

And here is what I will be experimenting on.  I assembled these a few years ago (a Fujimi P-51 and a Monogram Fw190, both 1/48) and use them occasionally for trying things out on.  I have glossed the P-51 and will use this to practice on before moving on to the B-17.
Actually it was top fun assembling these old kits, it only took an hour each.  I should do more of that!
Cheers for now,
Roger

Oil stains now added to the top wing.  These were copied from the photo I have of this B-17.

B-17s threw a lot of oil at altitude, due I suppose to worn rings and valve guides on a supercharged air cooled engine.  American radial engines always seem to leak, and on the B-17 most of the oil came out of a breather at the top, though they leaked everywhere to a degree.

The exhausts were under the wings so that is where the exhaust staining goes.  Note that on the top of the wings the oil ran between the vents at the back of the wing, leaving the area behind the vent clear, rather than staining it with oil.

Plenty more weathering to go, but for now this will have to be left to dry for a few days.

Bye for now,
Roger

Hi,
Well when I'm not working, I have done a little bit more on my Soviet Sub, now has aerials fitted.
But for you retired, or few hour types then you have more opportunity I guess.
Hoping to start another project this holiday.
But that apart, this is a lovely looking B-17G Roger. Will you be placing it on a base/diorama setting?
Cheers,
Bigkev

It does seem we are the only ones still going, but I guess people have a lot on at this time of year.

I have thought about extending the build into a diorama - still thinking about it.  Is the USAAF bomber support set by Airfix any good?

Thanks Olvar.
I bought a nice little hand vice at Telford, which you can see in the photo, together with the pitot tube I have just whittled up from a bit of bent brass. It is gentle enough for plastic too - I used it on the MB5 to shape the ends of the tiny cannon stubs.  A thoroughly recommended tool, and only £10.

The other photo is of the big aerial (VHF?) that sits on top of the nose on late B17Gs.  I thinned it down until I was happy with the thickness, but it was missing the dipoles at the front.  It was too thin to drill through, so I made a saw cut underneath half way through, lay a length of 0.2mm nickel silver in place, then back filled with superglue.

BFN,
Roger

I had the B-17 out of the cabinet along with one from a previous generation and thought I'd take some photos.
The silver one you will recognise, as being the new generation Airfix kit built by me.  The camouflaged one is the original Airfix kit built by my Father in the early sixties, with a few bits missing!  Must be battle damage.
