Title: Which are the hardest models to make?
Post by: zak on September 08, 2020, 05:52:47 PM
As you know, I jump from subject to subject.
It crossed my mind to ask "Just which are the hardest and most demanding to make?"

I think I know, but what do you lot think?

Each type requires a slightly different approach, although all require some degree of skill in many of the same areas.

So Aircraft, well I would have to sub-divide and say rigged biplanes are harder than unrigged.
Airliners are harder than fighter, because of the windows, and livery, and so on.
Let me know your thoughts.

I find soft skin vehicles harder than tanks.
But are Tanks easier than aircraft?

Anything with Brass!

I would say ship models - lots of complicated bits and bobs and it takes a long time to do them - also they have lots and lots  of brass.  I get so far along with them then need a break so I can come back refreshed.

Oh! and anything that doesn't come with a set of instructions and diagrams
telling you what to stick where in what sequence!

Any poorly made or thought out model where the parts do not fit and lots of extra work is required.
This could apply to any genre I suppose.

Dunno really. You just stick 'em all together and slosh some paint on.

For me larger models that take more than say a month are very hard, so ships come into the hard category for definite.
Haddock is just saying this, but it is in fact not true, everything he does is well considered.

I think ships overall, followed by figures might be easy to build but then you have to be an artist to paint them, aircraft next especially bi planes with all that rigging and then armour it's easier to hid the mistakes.

As I build this tank, my views are changing a little.

I think anything with rigging is hard. Then brass work comes next. Helicopters are relatively straight forward - just delicate.

Yes, but canopy framing can be a trial.

Jet aircraft are easier than helicopters.

Is that because they don't have revolving whirly things??
A jet pipe blowing hot air much easier....!
Why not change to 'Jets', Chris???

Sailing ships as almost invariably rigging instructions are either ignored by the kit maker, vague or nonsensical. A distant second to sailing ships are shiny things such as airliners and vehicles where I have found there is no defense or hiding from intrusive dust.

I have a lot more helicopters in my stash compared to jet aircraft Kevin. So plenty to do.
