Title: PRINCE OF WALES in1941 by TAMIYA in 1:350
Post by: Haddock on August 10, 2020, 11:33:43 AM
Latest project folks. Got the kit from Hobby-craft  a few years ago, less than £50, since then I've added wood decks and some etched brass.
The decks are from Wood Hunter and are 0.25mm thick including the peel off backing film which takes up about half the thickness so quite thin.
The brass is from Eduard. Some of it won't get used for all sorts of reasons.
Started a few days ago whilst waiting for stuff to dry on HMS Kent. Mainly test fitting stuff and sorting a build sequence.
Haddock.

I don't how he does it. I think I'm doing well getting two out at a time. Hmm, must try harder!!!
Looking forward to seeing this build progress and wonder what gems of inspiration are around the corner.

I seem to remember in engineering that big problems are usually lots of little ones joined together.
If you can knock the little one down one at a time, you usually get there in the end.
I keep telling myself this.

In keeping with excellent in scale look.

The masks are Tamiya masking paper, just Tamiya tape on a paper backing, east to manipulate.

Progress seems slow although there are lots of small sub-assy's and other stuff to deal with.
You aircraft chaps will be pleased to know there's a nice Walrus in the kit.

Somethings are sent to try us.
Thought it was time to check the fit of the cranes, now I've made a hinge.
As you can see, they don't fit, they should drop onto the crutch, obviously they don't.
If you look at the 2nd pic you can see why, the brass jibs aren't the same as the plastic ones, by a considerable amount.
You can buy the etched brass in two lots, the first is "railings and cranes", the second is "other stuff"
such as radar, lots of surface detail, most of it not needed and other bits and bobs.
The first lot is a stand alone set, so if you don't want to go to town, it will be fine. However, the little brass bracket come with the second lot so you can fall into the trap as I have just done.
I find this annoying, these things aren't cheap. I think we have a right to expect some sort of quality control.
Good job it's only a hobby.

Thanks guys.
Not much is impossible, it's just irritating.
The Tamiya kit is very nice in spite of it's age and Eduard have a reputation
for nice brass, they just don't seem to be talking to each other in this instance.
There seem to be lots of other little niggles.
Haddock.

Just fished this out of the cupboard where it's lain since October when I fancied doing
something else for a break and got carried away.
Remembering where I was is the first job, it all looks rather daunting now.
Bit on the big side compared with submarines and destroyers. I seem to remember there
are some Corvettes knocking about somewhere as well.
Note to self, " don't try to do too much at once !!"
