Title: Vietnam OH-6A
Post by: chriswil42 on June 21, 2020, 02:11:45 PM
This one I am intending to put in a small diorama. Yes both Martin and Dave got me fired up with dioramas. The kit is the Italeri 1/72nd kit. I have already cut the doors out of the starboard side and filled the hinges on the port side. The aircraft in Vietnam were flown without doors. I have a couple of figures to put in but the crew chief is a little big (or chopper too small) so I'll have to decide how to attack that problem. PSP acquired and I need to make some sandbags for a revetment.
This project could be a little slow.

Slow is fine - it will be great to watch it develop.

I expect to do some sand bagged revetments with psp on the ground. I'll need to think about some additional figures maybe.  Don't know yet.

Yeah, went and broke it trying to fit it in the fuselage properly. Had to do another mod to get a proper fit. Why do I work with such small stuff?

Hi Chris,
I built one of these a few years ago, it is a tiny airframe, needing the manipulation of fingers more suited to a Sci-fi film.
But although small, I'm sure you will turn out something 'special'.
Hang on in there, Chris, your next model could be a 'Chinook' or something similar in size to make up for this one.

You takes your choice: 'compact and bijou' or 'big and ungainly' (which take up more storage space!!!!)
It's looking good Chris keep up the good work.

Size of diorama now determined. It's about 14cms square. Here is a picture of the prepared base before any colouring or clean-up.

Homemade - a bit of plywood with filler spread on the top.
To colour it next.

In your hands, this has the start of being an excellent helicopter diorama.
I watch and appreciate with interest.

Well here is the basic diorama laid out with the base painted. I've taken the inspiration from a photo I found which has the mix of barrels, sand bags and ballast filled woodwork. Got quite a  few sand bags to make yet.

Yes I thought about putting some vegetation on but would have been out of place. All the photos of this type of subject show lots and lots of bare earth.
Title: Re: Vietnam OH-6A
Post by: MSea on August 13, 2020, 11:05:10 AM
Yes Chris all the photos I have seen have been just mud/soil - you could have done a lighter shade inside. With lots of people standing/walking on the mud , it would have made it a lot flatter and changed the colour a little - BUT i still think your diorama is great.

The odd Coke can and cardboard box of rations, a machine gun.
Like you it always looks red soil/ mud, the odd bit of vegetation growing by the sandbags maybe?

I did think about adding some grass round the bottom of the sandbags - modification A maybe.
There tended to be no rubbish (sorry Martin) round the helos - could be ingested by the engines.

As you know I use oil paint and there is a Burnt Umber(Green Shade).
I use this as a wash over bare earth and it adds a bit of interest to
the ground.

I was having another "senior moment", it is Raw Umber, which is a bit "dirtier looking"
than the Burnt variety. Sorry about that.
