Title: Beside the Seaside (1:35 Coble and motorcycle and Caterpillar type tractor)
Post by: zak on June 17, 2020, 09:19:31 AM
I decided to start a new thread about the Coble.
This may or may not evolve into a diorama as Tony suggested.
A beach scene with a boat, shed and method of hauling the boat out of the water.

The coble was scratch built using old cereal packets, a bit of balsa and a lot of superglue.
On the tractor diorama there was some discussion about the naming of parts, this sort of continues from there.

Diagram showing the names of some of the parts.
Each coble between the Humber and the Tweed has its own particular peculiarities.

A nice different model to look forward to.
And something with a topical local flavour.
Looking forward to seeing your creative skills on this one.

Hi Zak,
Chris's puns are as bad as mine.
But this is going to be another startling build, I can feel it.
'Bempton's Best' is on the build again.....
Cheers,

A pole with a bladder about halfway up, flag at the top and a weight at the bottom to make it float upright.
Used to mark the ends of fleets of pots or lines in the case of fishermen or anything else that needed to be marked. Seine net fishermen used one to mark the "ship end" of the anchor gear. Used in the Navy for all sorts so its not just a fishing term. End of a fleet of herring nets was called the "pole end". The poles on the cobbles at Flamborough are carrying what could be termed "dahn buoys" although they would probably have their own term. Just a marker buoy really.
Haddock.

Great modelling and educational at the same time, loving it!!! That explains why the fishermen keep pinching the bamboo poles we use when bird ringing, to make those dahn buoys :(

Post by: zak on June 19, 2020, 02:15:09 PM
The intention was to make a building/ storage shed for the fishermen to keep their bits and do a bit of fettling when the weather was too poor to venture out to sea, but this looks too posh.
It may have to be saved for something else, but I will finish it, so Coble landing may be on hold for a short time.
I envisaged a chalk building with brick at the corners and so on.

I am in the process of trying to build a "Haddock" style shed, more in keeping with the fishing angle.
This will be wooden with a corrugated, rusty roof and tar streaked boards.
I have another project in mind for the "posh" shed.

Before I got side tracked by Haddock into something by the sea, I was building a motorcycle for a small diorama. Then I thought some of the fishermen would like an old bike, so I include it here and hence the amended title.
This is a 1/35 Thunder Models Indian 741B, but built in civilian mode, quite a bit of etched brass, especially for the wheels.
I have added the stays to the front mudguard as extras so far.

You ought to try and source a gull to sit on the coble, they'll all be heading back to the seaside now the tourists are out in force!!
p.s. just to be pedantic there's no such thing as a seagull, it's a misnomer.

It will require a few coated and some judicious painting.

Separate links always look better than the old 'elastic band' type of tracks. A lot of work but I think they look a lot better, you have a better chance of getting them to sit properly. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Some nasty fumes given off at the start.
Here is a bit more progress, tracks painted with under colour still more rusting needed.
It is all becoming rather large, the finished diorama will be over 3 ft long.
Maybe an ideal opportunity to add a narrow gauge railway, time will tell.

A narrow gauge railway at coble landing, well it might just happen.

In 1/35 scale, OO track scale out at about 2 ft, the sleepers will have to be hidden.
The two locos shown are from my WW1 building days. One of them actually works.

This may lead on the a second board and have a permanent place in my modelling room. if I can fit it in.
Sandra wasn't amused when I suggested I could take over another bedroom.

Hi Zak,
What most of the members don't know, is that all of 'those' models you have produced as been the catalyst for the the 'Dave Smith' tower of Bempton, akin to 'Trump Towers'
I can see it from Bridlington Hospital even now......

Title: Re: Beside the Seaside (1:35 Coble and motorcycle and Caterpillar type tractor)
Post by: zak on July 27, 2020, 01:28:25 PM
Well 1/35 is 8.709 mm = 1 foot, so OO gauge track has a gauge of 16.5mm, so it is about 2ft.

So I have been scratch building a coach in 1/35 scale on the lines of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
Here it is undercoated, running on Hornby OO bogies, I still need to come up with a livery.

Completely out of card of various thicknesses.
It is about 1 ft long, I need a few more and a loco to pull them, then a model railway layout to run them on, it never stops!

Title: Re: Beside the Seaside (1:35 Coble and motorcycle and Caterpillar type tractor)
Post by: zak on July 28, 2020, 07:59:27 AM
That was the prototype, this is number two.

This will help to show how it was built.
I have used various card overlays to get the detail on the coach side.
Three or four of these overlays have the apertures cut in them and then they are all glued together.
I always give card a coat of shellac to help stabilise it a little.

This one has slightly thicker card for the interior side of the coach, this may be a mistake, it was much easier to cut thinner card and it may be better to glue several thinner ones together in future.

I bought the bogies from Cropper, I need to go back and buy the rest of his stock and some brass wire as well.
The prototype coach still needs glazing, door handles, grab rails. foot steps and so on adding, and painting of course.

This all happens as I wait for the car to dry and so on.
