Title: HEAVY CRUISER HMS KENT IN 1:350 BY TRUMPETER.
Post by: Haddock on June 04, 2020, 11:37:27 AM
Started this a bit more than a week ago, doing bit and bobs whilst waiting for other stuff to dry.
            I got carried away.
As you can see, the ship is water-lined and some "re-engineering" done, mainly so as I can glue the superstructure in place from inside the model.
I've built most of the sub-assemblies and started to plan the rigging, I've drilled sixty holes to accept the funnel stays using old photo's as reference material, some will need "'addock 'oles" to pass through two decks.
I'm pleased with the cranes, found a different way to tackle building 'em.
Haddock.

It would be if Zak was making it -- you might take a few more days, but the finished article will be excellent.

Hi Haddock,
Nice to see this one. Sixty 'addock ole's' well that's quite a few to drill in the right place.
Patience is a virtue, I think I might call you 'Saint Haddock' from now on.....
Cheers,
Bigkev

Some shots of the larger of the etched brass work.
Now it all goes back in the box so I can complete HMS York
and Schleswig Holstein.

All this great stuff, is a beauty to behold.

Been sloshing some paint on.       Not without it's difficulties.
During and after WW2, the Admiralty saw fit to dump lots of information, in particular, information on Admiralty paint(s).
If you really want to know more about this, you can visit the Sovereign hobbies website. James Duff(Jaimie) has done a lot of research on the subject and published his results. It's available to download, free, as a service to modellers. I comes as a PDF file, about 11 pages long, it's a magnificent effort and shows some of the problems ship modellers have when building RN ships of that era.
After some effort, I ended up with three painting diagrams, all slightly different in both the pattern and colour call up.
So what you see is what I think the ship may have looked like in late 1941.
Decks were a bit of a problem, Trumpeter would have you paint them a dark grey (extra dark sea grey). The information I found was a little confusing. One school of thought says steel decks were painted dark grey, maybe dark grey blue. The wood decks may have been painted camouflage colours but the pattern is largely unknown. Another school said all ships should have their decks stained with black stain, not paint. This had the effect of darkening the decks but still leaving the caulked seams visible. Finally, Trumpeter have depicted the fore-deck as planked, I've found a very clear picture showing it was steel, painted a dark deck colour so the fore-deck planks needed to be removed.
I've gone for my version of the pattern and colours, steel fore-deck and wood decks stained, probably not dark enough but who is to know.
Haddock.

There was a ship camouflaged like this in an episode of 'Race to Victory'. It was a brief clip but I thought the ship looked interesting.

Funnels fitted and rigged, 40 stays believe it or not.
Tripod masts in progress, I'm making it up as I go along.

Not being up to your standard - I would have cut down the number of stays down to about 4 per funnel.
That's why my ships are not up to your level.

Masts ready for a coat of paint. Some bits and bobs added "for effect" as a well known modeller would say.The strange bend atop both masts is to accommodate the type 281 radar set, one on each mast, they worked as a pair. Non in the kit so I'll have to scratch build something.

The 'Sea' is to be believed.
It has not appeared yet, but when it does it will 'look' the real deal.
If only most things in life were as certain as Haddock's seascape base's.
