Title: Airfix 1:35 WWII U.S. Military Tractor with diorama
Post by: zak on May 28, 2020, 02:39:42 PM
This is from Airfix and the photos show the box art, what is in the box and then once you open the poly bags.
3 Poly bags, 2 with plastic parts and the other with a small etched brass fret and the transfers.
It does not state what type of tractor this actually is, probably a Case.
Instructions/colour schemes are provided from military(US) and civilian use.
No figure is included, so why put one on the box art?

Further research suggest this is the Thunder Models tractor, at least I think.

Yes I have that issue with a Fujimi helicopter I've almost finished. The photograph on the box does not match what's inside. One or two little mods were required.

Not much modelling at the moment, too much going on down the allotment, and I decided to do some research on the tractor and watch several build reviews of the Thunder Models one and also some builds.
They certainly warn you of some of the problems, which seem to be very few.
Exhausts to improve, you can buy resin and brass add on bits, but I probably will not bother, I will just attempt to improve what is in the kit if I can.
Plug leads and so on.

Engine as supplied with starter motor, distributor and oil filter added, no spark plugs or leads.
The leads were added from wire of different sizes.
The plug covers are insulation from wire.
No batter is supplied, it should be to the left of the engine.

The fan is etched brass, with no fold lines, so I used the etched brass bending tool to assist getting the bends right.
The fan belt was made from Tamiya tape and glues into position.

Radiator added with hoses, exhaust drilled out.
Gear stick added, basic engine/ transmission work completed.

I have been unable to find information about the battery.
Some models had a magneto and so no battery?

The extra detail makes it into an excellent model from just a very very good one.

The extra detail makes it into an excellent model from just a very very good one.
It is a really nice kit, and so far it goes together well, the only ejector pin marks were on the inside of the mudguards and when built these would not show. I removed them even so.

Looking good Dave.
Thanks Chris.
Once again the etched brass had no fold lines etched and so I used my trusty bending tool.
They were then fitted to the tractor.

Construction, just about complete, now onto undercoat and then painting.
Military tractor or civilian, I am undecided as yet.
Pristine or weathered? Again undecided.

I think this would look good in a workshop diorama, or in a barn, again the thought process are just starting to work.

In a barn and very weathered
In a barn, part of a collection, newly restored, with tools and other stuff about?
I will have another tractor to go with it.
This will leave room for something awaiting restoration outside -who knows.
Corrugated iron barn with workshop attached.

It needs some light weathering and some mud on the tyres.
Meanwhile on with the tractor shed/workshop/barn.
Balsa construction with corrugated iron sides.
Ony rear and one side will be on show.
I may leave the roof off for better views inside, or I may make a roof and make sure it can be removed.

trying out a few ideas, I think Martin's Zombies would be a home, axes and sledge hammers.
The Jeep must be tractor Johns next project.
Title: Re: Airfix 1:35 WWII U.S. Military Tractor
Post by: zak on June 03, 2020, 08:06:30 AM
All the barns that I have painted in my youth were either black or lead oxide red, I decided on black(?).
I then decided that this was a bit dark for the workshop area and thought that this area would need to be lined with plasterboard or something. Tractor John is not getting any younger and need his comforts when working on his latest project.
So the second photo is just to see how it looks.

As ever with Dave's posts I'm enjoying watching this build progress but now wish my stash of building material was bigger!!! I have to scratch around for items to make things, but I suppose that's the meaning of 'scratch building'!!

I have added the interior lining and the odd enamel sign and poster that seemed relevant.
On his travels looking for old vehicles to restore Tractor John occasional picks up an enamel sign or two.
I am using a MiniArt set of tools, here are two tool boxes.
The Case tractor manual was reduced on the computer.

Thanks Haddock. lining added, only a small amount of black now.
This is the present state of play, in truth the wheel fell off, it is only held on by a very small stub of plastic.

I'm still working on the scene, yes the other tyre came off during the placement, I am really going to have to look at that and brace them with some pins.
Tractor John in his spare(as yet) empire. He is looking at his Case manual.
The desk is from Diopark, the drawers do move in and out.

I am detailing the diorama with tools from two makers, MiniArt and Diopark, it is difficult to say which are best.
The Diopark ones have lots of detail and even the makers name if cast into some of the wrenches, the desk drawers open,
The MiniArt has etched details, nicer toolboxes and other things, you will see more as I progress, no doubt.
Here are a couple of photos of the box art, just to whet your appetites.

I discovered them after watching a video on You Tube.

Homemade Bottles and mug.

The bottles are made by heating a cotton bug very gently and stretching slightly, make sure it does not twist.
The cotton bud needs to be of the plastic variety, not the compressed paper ones.
Once stretched the cotton bud is cut to the required size.
The corks are from made with a die and punch set.

The mug is a plastic straw with a copper handle superglued on.
The mug is filled with filler and will be painted and tea added inside.

More messing about, placing things on and seeing how they look.
Paint stains on the floor, and oil.
Tractor John has butter fingers and dropped his tin of red paint.
Tools still needed in the tool box.
It is never ending, when will too much be too much?
Title: Re: Airfix 1:35 WWII U.S. Military Tractor with diorama
Post by: zak on June 06, 2020, 10:54:00 AM
As its raining and not very nice, some tools in the toolbox and maybe a different vehicle for the diorama.
Tractor John also has a penchant for old motorcycles, in this case a BSA M20 courtesy of Tamiya. I wanted a Triumph but the Bronco ones were either out of stock or very expensive.
So far I have added a spark plug and lead, after some painting I will add other cable and leads.

Here it is.

Yes Chris its the only way - I do the same when planning a layout. Sometimes you forget things when you are in the midst of making so a look back at your plan reminds you. Other times you just rip it up and change half way through.

Hi John,
Great to see you back on the website.
I am sure that you will get that information and pictures you would like..
Hopefully you might be inspired to create a new topic of your next build.
Hope you are both keeping safe and well.
Cheers
Bigkev
